That's a difficult question to answer because different things scare different people. What one person may find firghtening may not phase you. Personally, I am yet to read a book that freaked me out even a little, and I have read tons of horror books.

Ghost Girl by Torey Hayden freaked me out. It's probably the scariest book I've ever read... because it's a true story. But it's not actual horror per se.

i'll give it a shot especially since its supposed to be true now i'm curious...
i'm also trying to think of other books that really freaked me out to give as an example but i can't think of any. some can be so wierd that they freak me out but not be scary, like titus crow.

Quoting myself:
try reading anything by Lovecraft. Despite I didn't find it in the least scary, some people I know did. Also, if you have a broad definition of fear, you might want to check out some pessimistic novels such as Brave New World or 1984 for a grim picture of the possible future.
You can find some more recommendations in this thread (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2899).

Damn, I was beat to the draw!
I'll second the Lovecraft recommendation. Some of his material is absolutely terrifying.

Heehee. See the other thread about books and their ability to scare. You might find some suggestions there as well. If you're looking for some intelligent gore, try my fav The Silence of the Lambs, or any of Thomas Harris's novels about the lovely Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

I concur, New England is the scariest place in fiction. ;)

Actually, the two scariest books I ever read in my life were non-fiction, or at least billed as such. One I read when I was about 10 or so; the other when I was much older. Both scared me witless but I think that it was just me. I don't think the books really scare too many other people.

Since Lovecraft is already mentioned (i would say that "The mountains of madness" is pretty scarry) i will also recommend Clive Barker's books of blood and especially the story "The midnight meat train"

Montague Rhodes James, the greatest and scariest ghost story writers ever, Penguin Classics has a two volume collection with all 33 tales written by the author and the rare complete manuscript of The Fenstanton Witch.
Try The Mezzotint, The Ash-Tree, Number 13, "Oh, Whistle, And I'll Come To You, My Lad, The Treasure of Abbot Thomas, Casting The Runes, The Tractate Middoth, A Warning to The Curious, etc. Alot of nasty shudder-inducing surprises await the reader, I love all his work.
