View Full Version : Comfort Food

This may have already been done, but oh well...sorry if it has been.

Every person at one point in time has a pretty low and bad day/hour/week/year...whatever. I find that food can be the cure for the moment...even if it is just for a little bit.

What food brings you the most comfort when you are feeling pretty down? and why.

When I think about the times that I have been down, I couldn't eat. If I'm just blah I like waffles, PBJ sandwiches, tuna salad sandwiches, pizza, pizza, pizza. I like comfort food all the time. A meal that makes me purr is roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy cooked by my mom, followed by her lemon meringue pie.

That sounds good. When I'm down, and I don't have the energy to cook my favorite meal (Homeade Tamales with the secret salsa!) A pint of Ben and Jerry's or Pancakes.

Chocolate is a natural happiness source. Scientifically. :D

I had a friend who's a biology teacher he used to eat chocolate when he's sad.:D

Mmmm, tamales. I am an enchilada girl myself. I am not that crazy about ice cream but the other day I bought Ben & Jerry's Creme Brulee. I sat down and ate the whole thing! Oink Oink, no offense little piggies, but it was so good. I then patted my tummy and took a nap. That's probably a lot more than anyone wants to know. :D

Haha, I love enchiladas...but I've got a secret family recipe for Tamales.

Wow, they are amazing. Imagine this, warm tortillas wrapped around gooey cheese and chicken and soaked in tomato based salsa and then a cascade of cheese on top. yummy! Eat it with rice and beans!:D

Well, quite surprisingly, they are kinda sorta like fruit rollups except that they are not fruit, they are rolled up tortillas with yummy things inside of them.

For me, it's usually sweets (candies, toffees) or dear old chocolate. How much I wish I had one right at this moment!

Wow thanks for enlightening me! It sounds partially healthy, partially fat and completely scrumptuous all at the same time! I'll make sure to make this delicacy my novel gorge fest :D

Chocolate chip cookie dough.

I made a cake last week for my husband's birthday - red velvet with cream cheese.

Comfort food is good and all but if I continue to feel like crap and pick up a fork all the time, I think I might need to look at the reasons why I feel the need to comforted. Not to knock the thread or anything, it's just something I struggle with, that's all.

I have one of those personalities.

FRUIT! I have such a weakness for fruit when I'm stressed or sad. There is nothing like bowl after bowl of tropical fruit salad or a plate of apple slices to munch on in times of need.

I'll bring along some mixed fruit for anyone who gets sick of their chocolate and mexican food(be that possible :p)

No, there are some of us (officially DOMs) who would like to know a bit more, e.g., did you lie down fully clothed for your nap or slip into something a bit more revealing? Did you have any Creme Brulee inflected dreams? &c.

A Creme Brulee Induced Dream

She lowered herself onto the sheets decorated with tiny yellow roses.
Feeling creamy and cool,
She felt the nearby fan blowing gently across her shoulders.
Falling into sleep, she pulled the ivory colored blanket over herself.
She could still taste the delicious sweetness of her treat as she licked her lips and swallowed,
And she smiled as she remembered the sugary crunch that came as a surprise.
Her eyes closed and there she was on a beautiful white sand desert.
The sun was high and the sky bright blue but there was no heat, only a gentle breeze.
She looked all around at the vast dunes,
a little sand drifting here and there,
and felt no fear of being alone,
and really did not realize she was until she heard a deep and mellow voice.
She turned to see someone offering their hand.
She took it and followed him to a large tent that seemed to breathe with each gust of desert air.
The sand floor was covered with a Persian rug and many pillows
and he motioned for her to sit down.
He excused himself and when he returned
he was followed by another man who was carrying a tray laden with sweets.
He knelt down beside her and with his hand, pushed aside a whisp of hair from her face.
"My name is Benjamin."
She was mesmerized by his deep voice and his wonderful eyes,
his beautiful mouth, his flowing robes, his gentleness and his hospitality.
She leaned forward, touching his arm, and smiling, said,
"What shall I do for you?"
He looked deep into her eyes and without a blink, he gestured and spoke to his friend,
"Gerome, bring me the dish."
She woke up laughing.

Home made spaghetti and meatballs. Reminds me of when the family was still all together and things seemed right with the world.

I love cherries and when it's the season that's what I eat for a treat. Otherwise it's just french bread and cheese, Sometimes a Snickers candy bar.

My wife thinks I am weird because I also like to eat peanut butter on a big tablespoon when I want something sweet.

Totally forgot, Fried Rice. Aw yeah! My friends mom makes the best fried rice with ahem, well I'm not going to say(type) it because its rather offensive in spanish...but its like a bread muffin that tastes so good with a Filipino version of Chicken noodle soup!

My comfort food would have to be my mom's potatoe salad. I'll make a batch just to have at the house, but while it is still warm pull a big bowl for me. Nothing gets me quite like warm potatoe salad... I think that I'm about due to make some. maybe I'll make some on the 4th so that I can fix the craving this started. I also love cream pies made with jello, yogurt, and Cool whip in a grahm cracker crust. Sounds a little odd, but trust me they are really good and healthy for a sweet.

There are very few problems in life that can't be solved with PIE!

Any type of fruit pie.... Apple Pie, Blueberry Pie, Cherry Pie, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, Peach Pie, Key Lime Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie...... Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to any/all of the above and it's impossible for me to stay upset (or thin).

right now, I would go for a nice "salame con queso"...that would be a sort of ham-meets-sausage with a nice spicy cheese...it's really very difficult to explain because salames only exist here...in Argentina

But I can honestly say that it's heaven on earth (especially if you like salty food)
