its actually J.R.R. not JCC.
Anyways these books are not in the public domain, and actually since Tolkien transfered the copyright to his estate before he died then it will be closer to 2100 before they are in the public domain.

They're making the movies in New Zealand. They're making them all at the same time too though. No breaks in between.
The first one is coming out in december of this year.
I think it looks very very good. You can see the trailer here

Has anyone heard anything about the movies they're making about that, and if so, do you expect much from them?

December 2001 Fellowship of The Rings comes out.
If you do a search on any engine for "Lord of the Rings Movie" you'll get a LOT of returns -- mostly serious fans of Tolkien putting up sites to the movie gossip.
The trailers look exciting, and there's a semi-underground movement to try to get people to go several times AND take all of their friends the first weekend (Dec 21 to Dec 23 -- though I think it's being released Dec 19), so it can have the highest-grossing first-weekend box office receipts of all time.
It's nice to see literature made accessible to the masses by film. It seems people are more interested to read a book once the film's come out. Well, if the film is good.

The only thing I could have a problem with is a perceived change in the female characters -- I have a feeling someone in Hollywood thought it wouldn't work if there was no sexual titillation. The trailer clips seem to hint at a relationship between Aragorn and Elrond's daughter/niece (it's been a while since I've read it) during Fellowship. Decide how hard-core you want to be about the movies being true to the book, suffer through the Ralph Bakshi and Rankin Bass stuff, and then re-evaluate how much it will affect your life if they aren't totally true-to-plot.
Personally, I hope giving each book 2 hours will do better justice to the story than the frightening acid dreams of those animation houses.
