Okay, I'm looking for some works which fit one or more of the below criteria:
- Modern American social commentary
- Satire
- Witty humor, but with substance
- Stupid and risque things that happen in a New York City
- Fresh ideas and themes
Any suggestions appreciated.

- Modern American social commentary - I am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolf (I think it was a little exagerated but watching the news about hollywood starlets sometimes makes me wonder if it is..)
-Stupid and risque things that happen in a New York City - Dog Run, I can't remember the author but it's set in New York and stupid stuff does happen maybe slightly risque.
Boys & Girls Together - William Goldman
Winter's Tale - Mark Helprin
Consider Phlebas - Iain M. Banks

Boys & Girls Together - William Goldman
I second this! So many stories in one novel and all linked!

One book that I just finished and would fit these three points is The Right Stuff, another Thomas Wolfe book. It has some incredibly insightful thoughts about America's social propensities and proclivites. And, if just taken as an exciting adventure story without the second level of sociological commentary, it completely satisfies as well. Also, there are some great moments of humor, and some unique content on the space race and the Mercury astronauts.
