So, the "Do you vocalize words in your mind as you read?" thread got me thinking, what do we sound like?

No, not our writing voice, our spoken one! Or ones if you're a thespian. Or if you have a personality. :D :D

It's hard to imagine what you all sound like. Almost like the hugest piece of the puzzle is missing. It's totally cool not to be able to see your facial expressions, but sans voices? Bit harder.

You get to guess what i sound like; the next person guesses what you sound like. Inflection, timbre, speed, pitch, volume, etc. Cartoon character anyone? ;) Along the way, we should manage to figure it out. If we do, tell us; if we don't we have to keep guessing. It's kind of like "Character Images" but not quitequite.

Ok, what would a guess be like without a hint? I am a girl. :D

I think the last statement is interesting. For whatever reason I'd imagined this forum was populated by males, except when I encountered obvious names such as verybaddmom and emily55321 (don't correct me if I'm wrong about that number; I don't really care ;P).

Btw, amuse, I posted something to you in "Funny Website." Check it out!

oh, i just answered it! and have you read "Character Images"? a lot of people thought the same thing. also one or two men found themselves typecast as women. and, some of us were likened to cats.

Gee... appearance would be a lot easier to describe than voice -- especially since we already have a lot of clues as to what each other looks like. I'd be interested to know just what everyone *thinks* they know about each other. For instance, when I first got here I thought Koa was about 30! But I know why that is; because one of the first threads I read was the "thought/language" one, and she has so much technical knowledge of it. And I thought az was Koa's age. :D

As for voices... it's hard to describe those. It would be interesting if most of us were right, and it turned out we were describing each other's inner-monologue-voice. Most of my impressions can really only be described in terms of personality. Maybe you'll associate them with the same type of voice I do. Hope so, or this is a lot of wasted writing. :D
--I think of Den's as not really low, but mellow, you know? Practical but soothing. :D On a scale of 1(high) to 10(low) maybe a 6.5 -- or 7, but with a girlish timbre...
--I hear Koa as a 6. Friendly but not gushy; uncertain but not too quiet.
--Az, about a 4. Just a smidge to the softer/calmer side of the norm; very caring and friendly, but with a will-take-no-BS undertone. ;)
--VBM, also a 4, but more "womanly-sounding" ;) (as opposed to a girl, not a man. lol). Very outgoing, affectionate, cool-aunt type -- "rocker-chick Mother Nature." :D :D
--Kik, I can't decide whether 4 or 6? Not high, but maybe medium to high-ish with low undertones. Very friendly and easy-going... hard to explain, but like paying attention to what you're saying, thinking, and feeling at the same time. :) Brotherly, maybe.
--Sancho, maybe 3.7 to 4...somewhere in there. Very light-hearted and friendly, but deep-thinking and -feeling.
--AP, 6.6-ish. Quiet but not shy; serious, thinking. Nice, empathetic, but mind always half-occupied with his own business.
--Rocksea, 4.5...friendly, fun, but very empathetic also. Life-of-the-party, but in an intelligent, perceptive way -- making sure everyone is included in the fun.
--RH, 4 but without as low undertones. A little absent-minded-sounding, ;) but feeling/emotional.
It's really hard to pinpoint everyone else, but I can definitely hear them. LOL even Abdo has a voice, believe it or not, even though I've never met him (and could someone fill me in on him popping in earlier???? What was that about? Is he coming back?). But this post is long enough as it is, isn't it? :p That's all for now, then.

I'll share what I think about a few members... I don't know too many, though, and not too well, on top of it, but this is what I think about these members...

amuse (f) -- I can't think of anything cause I'd imagined you as a guy all this time and all of a sudden you're a girl! :p
emily655321 (f) -- girlish, high-pitched voice, a fast, unstoppable talker, in my image has blonde, curly hair
verybaddmom (f) -- just because she has the word "mom" in it, I'm thinking of her in her latel 20s, short straight hair, voice is calm and dignified
IWilKikU (m) -- has the voice of a punk singer, blunt, has the spirit of a teenager
Koa (f) -- quiet, shy, but secretly athletic and can run faster than most people
den (m?) -- wise, fair, a figure of authority

Oh, LOL, how did I end up describing looks/personalities instead of voices? But anyways.

i've found that the voices in my head sounds a hell of a lot sexier than the voice in my throat...... it can be quite surprising sometimes... to hear myself talk and be utterly let down.

emily655321
05-08-2004, 08:42 AM
"Blonde, curly hair"?????

Boy, oh boy. :D My typing is obviously faster than my tongue hehehe

emily655321
05-08-2004, 02:16 PM
Although, now that I think of it, when I talk I do talk pretty fast. But most of the time I don't talk at all, just think and think and think and look very serious, and then when I open my mouth all the thoughts come gushing out. :D If I'm comfortable around the person/people, that is. I can be really shy, but I'm getting better at that. In fact, why am I even talking NOW? Oh no, I am unstoppable. :D

[edit] Oh, and I also don't look at dates on old threads when someone posts on them. I.E. Disregard that comment about Abdo. LOL The day was just kind of running through the back of my mind yesterday, and I didn't realize I was going through the words in that post until I got to that part and then pondered again for a second and went, "duh!" I'm a dummy, nevermind. :D

its funny, i have a hard time hearing your voices in my head, over the ones that were already here when i started meeting you folks. hehe. just kidding (*to self: "werent we?"*)

to me Em sounds bright and bubbly and really excited all the time, like her mind runs faster than she could possible talk or type. maybe a little high pitched, but only due to that high energy thing. and she giggles.

amuse sounds very soft spoken, a little low pitched. very calm and sweet and she uses endearments when talking in person (dear, hon etc.). her very sweetness makes it easy to underestimate her passionate core.

FayeFaye sounds to me like her posts...sort of quick and sporradic. one minute there is a conversation going on and then in pops Faye with a brilliant contribution and then poof: she's gone before you can ask her anything.

AP speaks to me softly, calmy, almost infinitely tolerant of our enthusiastic goofiness. low pitched but firm and no nonsense for the most part. the extreme logic of AP's arguments makes it such a sweet surprise when a smilie shows up in his posts, showing the hidden sweet side.

Simon and Sancho seem similar to me, i have NO idea why. both with deep voices, although Sancho's seems deeper to me for some reason. Simon laughs more, at least that is the impression that i get..and its a fast laugh, energetic and excited in its presentation. i also get the feeling that Sancho has really rough hands from work, and that he wears a beat up hat.

Jay's voice had to take a radical change in my head a while ago (like ajoe's) when i realized that i had their gender worked out wrong in my shrunken brain. Jay seems to be so friendly and fun that i now liken her to her ghostly avatar, and hear caspers voice in my head when she speaks (Casper is cool Jay, no worries!). ajoe has a yound sounding voice, reminding me of lisa from the simpsons.

Den is, to me, the voice of reason here. her posts occur when there is something important that is being missed in an argument, so i hear her voice like a wise voice booming in from another realm. also, she reminds me of the welcome wagon lady, always right there when a new member needs a hello.

Koa's voice sounds quiet and almost timid, unless you are talking about language or travelling and a few other things, and then in her enthusiasm she forgets herself and speaks out loud and clear. i fear that in person i would be constantly asking her to repeat herself, but i would do it for fear that i have missed something that she said, and i know that if she said it, its worth hearing.

Kik...whew. kik's voice is the clearest to me. raspy (from all that unfiltered..um..tobacco) and not as deep as he would like it. his laugh is like a cackle...sort of evil and muwahhahha in nature. it seems to all be front for an extremely kind interior that embarasses him. (oops...sorry. we werent supposed to notice that, were we?)

and random hero? speaks in that sort of tough guy manner, with just an impression of "dont give a damn" attitude thrown in to confuse us, but this is a guy who can laugh until milk squirts out his nose. there seems to be something lurking underneath that i cant quite put my finger on, but it might be.....extreme intelligence.

allright, so Im pretty sure that i missed a ton of people, but i just worked a ten hour shift waitressing, and i am done like dinner. so im gonna call it a day here, and maybe add later those that i have neglected here (i am such a libra...all peace, harmony and balance!) anyhow, these are just descriptions of what happens in my head. any resemblance to actual people or events is stictly coincidental. no offence meant in any conceivable manner. i love you all collectively.

(oh and Em..."rocker-chick Mother Nature"...thank you. rock on!)

Lolita, well then allow me to weigh in. I have your voice pegged as cultured, educated, understated, adverb-favoring and, of course, British. (I just watched “Love Actually” last night so it had a strong influence on my impression.)

Amuse, great idea for a thread. I hear you with a soft friendly California-accented voice but with East-Coast directness sneaking in.

Em and Vbm thank you for your kind characterizations. I don’t deserve them. I do generally wear an old beat-up ball cap but only to cover up my misshapen noggin. I’m a victim of my region of the country as far as speech is concerned; people tell me I sound like that cartoon character “Foghorn Leghorn”

“Yer built too low, son. The fast ones, they go raht over yer hed. Ah keep a-pitchin’ ‘em an you keep a-duckin’ ‘em. Heh heh heh.”

Vbm, sorry about those darned kids yesterday. Make ‘em feel as guilty as you can. And please accept a big “Feliz dia de Madre” from me.

Oh, :( between semesters dosen't bring me here very often and so I'm forgotten. J/k

Em, I'd hear her voice not quite so much on the high level as just full of energy. To me she has so many ideas that if she were speaking and not talking she'd have a hard time getting them all out.

Ajoe, talks like my Brit Lit teacher, the one who's class I was forced to drop last semester, but I insist on trying to take it again in the fall because I enjoyed her ideas. Ajoe has a very creative and inventive way of getting people involved in fun games.:D

Lara and Den sort of sound the same to me. They remind me of my mother when she imparts wisdom. Sometimes I feel like they're the wise man (in this case women) on the mountaintop, and yet they're perfectly content to come down and chat over a cup of tea.

Sancho and Crisaor both have a spanish accent and I agree on the hats.

Koa sounds like my old high school chum Sarah who always had so much potential but always beat up on herself. She always had a beautiful singing voice and I imagine Koa does as well.

I know I'm leaving a lot out, but I don't have much time at the moment. It's weird how I tend to compare everyone here to voices I know from my own life.

Deep voice eh. Well let me burst your bubble with the following description: currently typing this post is a short 100lb 18yr old wearing mismatching socks with short hair in two buns in the shape of horns, with a quiet voice, often mistaken for a youth of around 15yrs of age, who no one takes seriously and is usually dismissed as cute and innocent, therefore having nothing worthwhile or intelligent to say. In point of fact:

SIMON IS A GIRL

OK I’ve given this some more thought. Amuse what a great idea for a thread. Did I say that already? Hopefully I won’t offend anyone.

Amuse when I read your poems and your prose I hear and amalgam of Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon. It’s that old East Coast/West Coast thing again.

AP, I hear a more opinionated and less diplomatic (and possibly smarter) Tony Blair.

Ajoe, I don’t know why, but I’m getting Rita Rudner.

Em, I hear (and see) Sienfeld’s Elaine Bennis when you’re making a light-hearted post. When you’re making an opinionated post I get, and I think you’ll like this, Maureen Dowd (NY Times Thurs/Sun Op/Ed Columnist).

Vbm, ever since you allowed us the info that you smoked, I hear Ricki Lee Jones. “Chucky’s in Love uv uv uv.”

Kik, I’m getting Bill Murray: - “This is a cross, ah, of Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.”

Den, maybe it’s the avatar, but I get Ingrid Bergman except way-way-way more literate.

Lara, you and I joined this forum at about the same time and I’ve always pictured you as the woman who works at my local bookstore. I think she knows every single book in the store and makes the customers feel smart and welcome whether they’re looking for Dostoyevsky or Dr. Seuss.

Jay, You’ve gotta be the nicest, most even person on this forum. A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to chat with a woman from the Czech Republic for about 4 hours while we were incarcerated on a crowded airliner from San Francisco to Atlanta. She was a lot of fun to talk to and she filled me in on a lot of the history of the Czech Republic and fun things to do there. I just kept sitting there and thinking, “I wonder if she knows Jay? Hey, I should ask her if she knows Jay.” Wouldn’t have made much sense though. Anyhow, I’ve superimposed her onto you.

Papayahed = Jimmy Buffett

Simon, I see Sancho. Bahhhh hahahahah. Only Joking Simon. For some strange reason I’m getting Juliette Lewis in “What’s eating Gilbert Grape”

Shea, here again, I don’t know why but I keep coming up with Sheryl Crow. A muuuuuch younger Sheryl Crow. Btw, Sancho is just a screen name - and an attitude. It’s based on the gullible yet good-natured Sancho Panza who follows Don Quixote around

Random Hero, I know you’re way smarter that this guy but I can’t help it, I keep I seeing Bill from “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”
- “Strange things were afoot at the Circle-K”

Fool, with the Idaho location, and the firearm bit, I’m getting a strong impression of Randy Weaver on Ruby Ridge shooting it out with the Federales.

Sorry to leave so many good people out, but my brain is full.

well well well...dont i feel like a butthead.
definitely a misleading nickname, Simon, that's for sure. but i wondered briefly when there was that discussion about men wearing women's clothing and you seemed to support the idea. in fact, you made a comment about the unwearability of women's clothing. however, i dismissed it as a guy feeling like he has the freedom to admit that he does dress in women's clothes. i know that lots do (i have an ex...but that's another thread) but dont reveal it.
hmmm...here's me thinking that the anonymity afforded us by the internet has allowed us to be more open...silly. it has just allowed us to put together these images that are so TOTALLLLLLY incorrect.
in my own defense, i only said that you had a deepish voice and that you laugh a lot. even so, i said that sancho had a deeper voice than you. although i used the pronoun "he" it could have been much worse.....
and i did prepare a totally encompassing disclaimer at the bottom!

thank you for setting me straight. i apologize if i have offended you.

Edit: thank you much Sancho for the mother's day wishes. they were appreciated. the little bugger straightened up though; he was reminded long distance by my bf (who got to watch me cry on the webcam) to: "start sucking up sport!" and suck up he did. i got home from work and didnt have to do dishes!! yay!

Well, everybody's guessing that I have a high voice. :D But I'm not like nasal or squeaky...more just soprano-ish.

I've actually never heard of Maureen Dowd before, so I googled her, and she seems pretty well hated all along the political spectrum. :( (But I wouldn't deny that my head was not made for facts. In a political conversation I try to back up my position, and end up stammering, "Uh...well I read in the news...or...no, was it him?...well, I can't remember what he said, or to whom, or the name of the organizations...but...uh...he's a bad man!")

hey, thanks Sancho! glad you like this thread. and everyone else too! also for the mention of some great singer/songwriters. oh to be musical...

everyone's on target about my voice so far! how funny. on occasion, as em noted, it can rise, though it's usually low, even more so when i'm playing serious adult/sexy girlfriend.. i do say "dear" and "honey" a lot, as well (you should hear when i'm on the phone, and my cell rings: "Honey, hold on. No, not you; the other 'honey.'") and yes...it is mostly very darling, soft and california sunny unless- and then the east coast does kick in.

next: i will write my impressions. have been soooo thinking of this for a while. am even using word so that i don't lose anything. do you all lean forward to your computers when people make lists that you might be on? i do! tee hee. :D :D

What you talkin’ ‘bout Willis? Maureen Dowd is much beloved by all right (or should I say left) thinking people. Heh heh. She’s a huge champion of environmental causes, human rights, etc etc etc. Now your average Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbuagh crowd doesn’t much care for her. But who cares what they think?

Simon, Yep it's the girl on the bike. Am I even close?

Vbm, right you are about the drawl. We like to add a few extra syllables to every word down here (Hee-arr). Even little words like “it” = “ii-ut” or “at” = aa-ut”

I can't describe voices... i couldnt even say how mine soinds...it's just a voice... (btw...no I can't sing at all, no I don't run fast at all, and what else... i think I talk fast sometimes, cos my thoughts are too fast  and people dont understand...and I often do it in exams so I get lower marks than I'd want...).

Before I forget again, have I ever told you that at first I thought that amuse was around 19 or 20...and I thought 'damn another person who's so much wiser than me even if younger' :D I think hers is the only voice I can imagine, I imagine it to be low like some kind of...well, rap singer (female ones I mean)... :D

tee hee! actually, do you know, lots of people see me and think i'm like in my mid-twenties. somewhere between 23 and 28. my bf's 6 years younger than me and people think he's older. they also hear me over the phone and decide i'm blonde. not sure why...the golden state(?) mayhap. i can't rap. if you can imagine...who can't rap......let's say celine dion (could anyone be further), i would sound about 10 times worse! :D
"mayhap/i can't rap" will be my last rhyme, i promise, rofl. awful!! :D

the thing is, authors talk about inflection and pitch and timbre and all this stuff right and left, but the voice? almost never. i think it's so ignored...
and koa, i don't hear accents very well! so i "see" :) you when reading your stuff, with posters of The Cure on the wall, and a wistful pace when you walk uphill to old statues, your hair over your face as you lean over a book or your poetry.

em: fast, rollolloller coaster type way of talking. not quite staccato, but very fun. serious shades in there too, which are easy to ignore if one is concentrating on the surface joy. usually kind of high-pitched but deeper before a funny/dramatic pronouncement.
vbm: very jolly! robust but soft as well. kind of "nature girl meets whisky" type voice. has giggles lurking in the buccal region. ;)
sancho: well, that's not fair because now i know! but it's fun to read your posts with your voice/accent in mind. you seem fun, like you have your head on straight. i'd say your voice is easy-going, but definite. casual if your drinking, but sometimes you shoot from the hip, so to speak.
lara: ooh this is hard! for some reason i think you may end your sentences on a high pitch rather than an even one. and may talk a shade fast. but i don't think you talk a lot. don't know why. and i think you have a voice like birds ¡V the kind you don¡¦t notice at first but then realize is really pretty.
den: the voice of reason and mama earth. A bit low perhaps.
ap: deep. Very assured, like almost never caught off-guard. simultaneously supremely focused and distracted.
faye: i hear high octaves for some reason. and that you sound really mature. and i think you may have a really distinct giggle or sneeze.
koa: damn, i can't hear your accent(s). a fun voice, but quiet. not timid but almost. very firm once in a while, though. young but not childish. i¡¦ve only heard low pitched italian voices but somehow don't think yours is low. sometimes you talk fast, i think but not often. (read that twice. :D.)
shea: a dreamy voice. not the kind that says "we have to go NOW!!"¨ I guess it's the harp, I just can't imagine you ever yelling. urgh, can't do this!!! very hard to separate you from your harp here. you talk more, of course. :D
isagel: oh, such a pretty voice. friendly, and caring, charming, and altogether warm. kind of high, but not in an obnoxious way at all.
ajoe: same here! only just realized you're a girl; what to do! :D UM???...give me some time.
lolita: very upper crust, a touch fast, humorous, with a deeper voice than i'd have thought at first.
ravana: ah, i like your voice. :) i think. for some reason I think you speak quickly in your native language, and sometimes are quiet for very long periods of time. hunh???
iwilkiku: you sound casual, even when discussing something deep. it takes a lot for you to get that serious thing in your voice. but when it's there: whew! I wouldn't want to mess with you.. (don't kik me! :D.) for some reason I think your voice really is deep, but you speak with kind of young intonations. no offense.
sindhu: where are you?

so hard to make this list, mea culpa. i still ended up seeing more than hearing!

Papayahed. Dangit. Wup wup wup. * does Curley Howard of the Stooges routine* I’m sorry, Lo siento mucho, Je suis desole, Es tut me lite, Aw shucks I didn’t mean nothin’ by it. It would appear that I’ve fallen into the same gender trap that has befallen so many other forum members. OK, so I need to think of a new voice for you and I’m constrained by my tragically limited imagination. Women musicians speak to me; so I’m going to try one of my favorite artists: Marcia Ball. She’s a fabulous piano player and a singer who ranges from Blues to Rock to Zydeco to Western and is well known in the New Orleans, Austin, Memphis triangle.

Sorry Amuse; reckon I let the cat out of the bag. (fifty bucks to the first person who can explain that expression) Well then, I’ll just throw a monkey wrench into the works then. Some people think I sound like Hoss Cartwright. Yup yup yup, Howdy howdy.

Sancho, Cheryl Crow is a new one. Though I can't really sing either. Amuse I've been told my voice is relaxing, but I do get mad. Especially when fighting the department people at school when trying to get paperwork pushed through. Sometimes I just have to get in my car and scream!

The other day, my husband and I were watching Little Shop of Horrors, and (despite my relaxing voice) I was horrified to hear my husband say that sometimes I pronounce "sure" like the woman who plays Audrey in that movie!

I would say it has to do with a clumsy individual and a mucked-up attempt to drown a kitty. How it came to mean "to reveal secret information," I can't guess.

(And don't worry, Sanch, I've given away a ton of info about me on this thread.)

[edit] Az, that's impressive. You did put a lot of thought into this. And how did you guess my voice gets deeper sometimes? (Speaking of giving away info) Well, "deep" is probably the wrong word. But when I'm meeting new people, or talking to teachers or on the phone, my voice gets almost little-girl-like. But when I forget myself in a deep discussion or am being dramatic, as you said, it gets a tad lower. Spooky you. :D

i think it has something to do with taking the old "cat o'nine tails" out of its canvas bag for usage, which would promt the prisoner to um....spill the beans? hehe

I dont have time to read the whole thread, but I would like to say... write, that I dont speak in the tough guy manner. I think my voice is kinda nasally, and i tend to not pronunciate words like I should sometimes. I talk really really fast at times, and yes, I do laugh until milk comes out my nose or until someone gets mad and hits me. And the whole intelligence thing... I dont quite know. When I type I am simply slowing my thoughts down because my fingers cannot type very fast.

Im not gonna guess at voices, it would be useless to all involved in this thread.

I doubt I know everyone well enough to attempt attributing physcial characteristics to them, so I 'll spare everyone, but this is a great thread to read, all the interesting details are sneaking into view.

vbm reminds me of jack london, only in a girly way. the whole adventure, cold climate thing. :) i think your voices would have the same spirited ring.

emily reminds me of jo from little women a bit - not a request or invite to cut your hair, however!!! but you two do after all talk fast. :)

let's see...will write more later. must rest the conjunctiva. damn little baseballs. (yes i neglected to wash my hands after returning home from wal-mart. bad, bad pink eye. :( )

^ Why is this thread turning into "Character Images"?

LOL cause it's hard to describe voices. I think that's partly my fault, actually. I may have started the trend of just describing people's general demeanor. But I think visually, can't help it. Then again... does anyone here consider themselves an aural learner/thinker? (As in visual/kinetic/aural; seeing/doing/hearing) Where you think predominantly in terms of sounds?

that's weird ajoe, i thought i was describing voices.

i'm not an aural learner, em (Very visual), but my hearing is painfully acute.

edit: oh, and i'm very atuned to sounds because of the 6 years my bf's spent on the other side of the state in school - half of that time i was in california - we "see" over the phone. actually so does his mom. it's very weird for me when people like my stepmom like it to be quiet on the other end of their conversation - i don't know how she manages without aural clues for setting etc.

I get nervous when the other end goes quiet. I worry they've been disconnected, or are bored with what I'm saying, or are trying to end the conversation....

Oh god, I worry a LOT. :p

lolita: very upper crust, a touch fast, humorous, with a deeper voice than i'd have thought at first.

Lolita, well then allow me to weigh in. I have your voice pegged as cultured, educated, understated, adverb-favoring and, of course, British.

Yeh if you combine the two I guess you're pretty close.

"a touch fast?" that bit isn't very accurate. I think when I have to do a class presentation my voice goes a bit faster to get it over and done with *lol*

Also... explain 'very upper crust' to me?!

Hmm... AP is actually one of the few people I know ARE guys... then again, I'm pretty familiar with Indian names, what with my last name being one :) (but I myself am not an Indian :p)

i don't sound very close at all, to my way of thinking! :D
but whatever.
i guess the "upper-crust" bit is because sometimes when you describe people in the non-forum world, you "sound" a bit peeved/above them. like re: the girl/daddy/pony thing. and the guy who turned out to be a "prat."

Oh ok then, well the "upper crust" think is very me then.
