I really hope this hasn't been done. Sorry in advance if it already has.
Discuss upcoming movies that you really would like to see.
1. Sweeney Todd. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408236/) I'm a huge Tim Burton fan, so I can't miss this one.
2. Enchanted. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0461770/) Okay. So the movie trailer got me. When I saw that it was a Disney film and that it was about a princess and it was in 2-D on top of all that, I literally had a seizure in my movie theater seat. I know it's only in 2-D animation for a fraction of the movie, but it still made me almost wee my pants. i got really dissapointed when it switched to live acting, but then I got all happ again because it looks like an awesome movie anyway.
3. The Princess and the Frog. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780521/) After getting all hyped up on Enchanted, I did some research and stumbled across this movie coming out in 2009. It's Disney's first full-length 2-D animated film since Home on the Range. To be honest, I'm sick of the new computerized animated films about cute talking animals. I know that before the Switch there were 2-D movies about cute talking animals, but it seems to me that they never have any ones about princesses anymore. :( And I miss 2-D too much. (No pun intended there.) I mean, the new stuff is alright, but it gets old really fast. It's just not as pretty in my opinion. And 2-D reminds me of back in the good old days. (I feel old now.)
I think so many people got mad at Disney when they switched completely so they changed their minds. I'm happy. :)

I was going to say that his voice makes me melt in my earlier post, but I thought it would sound too creepy or weird. So I'm gonna say it now. Alan Rickman's voice makes me melt. The end.

OMG! I KNOW!!!! I was going to say that too! His mouth and his intense eyes!! Do you know who else does that, Matthew Macfadyen from Pride and Prejudice(2005). His mouth and voice is pretty darn sexy! He has a new movie coming out that seems pretty funny.

I do like Alan Rickman's voice but I wouldn't call it sexy. That is however, just my opinion.
My favorite line of his comes from Galaxy Qwest, which is about these TV actors who star on a TV show similar to Star Trek. Some aliens see the TV show, which has somehow been transmitted through space, but the aliens think the show is real, so they recruit the actors to save their race (or maybe it was their planet). I just remember Alan Rickman's character sitting at some promotion for a store opening in his costume saying "What a savings" and he just delivered the line so well and conveyed the disgust and boredom of the character so perfectly.
And then there was Professor Snape telling the students to turn to page 394 in The Prisoner of Azkaban.
(okay so I am off-topic. Sorry)

And, slightly off topic -- I, too, adore Alan Rickman. Excellent actor and his voice is great! Look forward to seeing him again.:thumbs_up

Well, I have been obsessing over "Sweeney Todd" since the rumors started about a film being made years ago already (when it was rumored to be Hugh Jackman as Sweeney and Sam Mendes directing).
You see, I am a musical theater FANATIC!! "Sweeney Todd" is, for me, the second best musical ever created ("Phantom" being first). So, unlike a lot of people who want to see it for Johnny Depp, Tim Burton and Alan Rickman (I know an awful lot of people do), I want to see it for 2 reasons and 2 reasons alone. They are:
1. Well, it IS "Sweeney Todd", of course!!
2. It is a Stephen Sondheim musical! The man is fantastic! One of the best composers ever!
For those of you out there that like dark, sadistic humor, this is perfect for you!!! Especially the song "A Little Priest".
Look out for the song that should start the film off. "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". Just BRILLIANT!!
Also, I won't give anything away for anyone who doesn't know anything about this show. I've known it since I was a kid, but I only got a chance to see it for the first time about 10 years ago. I thought it was quite humorous that a couple left during the intermission and never came back for the second act! You could tell they were quite put off by the show when they walked out! You would think that they would've had SOME idea of what the storyline was!!
Also, I bought the poster as soon as it was released! I love it! I think it definitely looks like a work of art!!
That's enough of my rambling about this film! :D

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go see The Darjeeling Limited tonight. I can't believe it's playing in my town. I can't wait! Too bad I missed its prologue, though, Hotel Chevalier.

It was AMAZING, as expected. I love Wes Anderson films soooo much. Peter was my favorite character...but I love Wes Anderson films because they show you what humans are really like. It's reality. No hiding from what we really are. It's all there, all the ugly stuff.

I can't wait to see Sweeney Todd. I hope the studio didn't succeed in getting the blood toned down.
The new Woody Allen film will be in theaters this month. Anybody else excited?
Lily: I have a crush on Natalie Portman and was able to get Hotel Chevalier from Apple.com before it was removed.:D
I just wanted to see Natalie's cute face and was shocked by the nudity.
There is some great subtle stuff in the short, but Wes Anderson annoys me with the slow-motion scored with indie acoustic. The might include Hotel Chevalier on the DVD, so you might still have a chance to see it.

OK. I am a gigantic "Sweeney" fan and I am getting more and more afraid each day that I hear new gossip about the film. I guess the blood is still in the film. They never managed to cut it out to make it a PG-13 film. It is still an R. Anyway, I heard that there isn't alot of blood in the film, but when there is, it is really flowing. My major concern is the music that is supposedly cut. I have heard that "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" was cut. That is THE song in the show for me! Personally, it sets the whole story off. It really gets the eerie mood just right. The second song for me is "A Little Priest". I am worried that the lyrics to that song are changed. At least that is what I heard. Now, I am going completely by rumors and gossip here. So, I am still hopeful that the story and music are intact. I am going to wait patiently, but all of this news isn't making me too happy. I really don't want to be disappointed in any way because I have waited for this film for a few years now.

Hmm... He's getting older and his films are changing. You might want to rent one of his earlier films. If I were to make a decison on seeing more of his movies, based on something like Scoop, I would not. And that would be such a loss. I say go to one of his earlier films. The next will be a tragedy, which I think he does well, but you might want to get familiar with him as a comedian first.

I'm not familiar with the musical, but I would feel cheated if I knew I was missing any contribution to story. I read that either the playwriter, or Sweeney scholar, saw the film and was very happy about it.

I thought the same thing. There really doesn't seem to be anyone else out there right now that I think could successfully fill those shoes besides him. As for the movie being a success, I don't know if it will be. Doesn't mean it won't be an OK movie. I just don't see a big rush from the general public going to see it. Of course, there is a major chance that I will be wrong. :)

It is one of the films on my list of movies to actually pay the price of a ticket for. I really liked the stage show, too. So, I will be interested in seeing how they brought it to the screen. When I first heard that they were going to make it as a movie, I was kind of "iffy" about the idea of it. But it does look like it might work out just fine.

So, I just saw a trailer for "The Spirit" coming out on Christmas Day. It looks like it might be good. If I happen to have to go out with the fam for a holiday movie, that one might be a good Christmas day movie to see...

Anybody seen "Slum Dog Millionaire" yet? How is it?

I don't have any plans to see anything in the theater until Half Blood Prince comes out. Netflix is going to have Quantum of Solice (007) out, so we'll rent that asap.

It's a little late, but...how it is is "meh."
Very intense, interesting in places, but according to what I know of India (note the qualifier? I don't know THAT much about India ;)) it isn't a well-rounded portrait of the slums.

I liked the way everything tied in together in Slumdog Millionaire, but I didn't like all the violence.

"17 Again" starring Zac Efron just came out yesterday. So want to see that.
Last weekend, the stupid Hannah Montana movie came out. (Sorry, Hannah fans, I'm not a fan of hers.)

Can't wait to see the two Herzog films coming out, Bad Luitenent: The Port Call of New Orleans as well as My Son, My Son What have Ye Done?.
I also look forward to Scorsese's Shutter Island which looks like his take on the horror film genre, kind of like what Kubrick did with The Shining.
Bela Tarr is making a new film called The Turin Horse, hopefully it will be much better than the disappointing The Man from London.
Also, I heard that Ramin Bahrani is planning to make a western so that should be interesting.
Brothers and Invictus
(Natalie Portman is my celebrity crush, and Morgan Freeman is Morgan Freeman--enough said.)

Brothers is a remake of a Danish film that was incredible! I don't know how I feel about it being redone but it's a great story and all the actors in the remake are capable sorts so I may actually go see it.

Why? Why is it that every film that comes out in Hollywood today has to be a remake of a perfectly fine European film?!?!?!? Yes I know, we already had this discussion in another thread, but still wtf? What's next? A remake of La Dolce Vita?

It's convenient, I suppose. :p I only found out about the Danish film a few days ago, after spending an hour or so looking for a good movie to watch on Netflix; whereas now I the trailer for the new one nearly every day. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of older movies, truth be told. Did you notice in my thread "Impactive Films" not one of the films I listed was released before 2000? It's weird, I only read old literature (mostly 19th C. stuff) and only watch the most modern films (21st C. with few exceptions).

You must learn the ways of the force and discover the wonders of Citizen Kane, Alfred Hitchcock and Apocolaypse Now. Hell, why not at least start out with Taxi Driver (1976), if not that then Pulp Fiction (1994)???
Hey btw, search Guy Maddin on youtube and watch his short film The Heart of the World, you'll be shocked to find out what year it was made ;)

But the Danish version isn't that old, it came out in 2004 or 05. And it was a tremendous movie, I would highly recommend it. Not always easy to watch, it's incredibly depressing, like all good Scandinavian films should be. ;)

According to IMBD, it was released in 2004 in Denmark and 2005 in England and the US.

The guy who played Jannik, the brother that was home, was amazing. I've seen him in several Danish films and he never ceases to impress.
Good grief, that was the movie I found. I just didn't look at the year! Well, the cover (the one I saw) looked oldish, compared to the new cover :p

Okay I've been whining too much but upon seeing the trailer for the Sherlock Holmes adaption, I was appauled. This is sooo typical of Hollywood. Take a brilliant work of literature with one of the most memorable of characters and turn it into some cartoonish Hollywood action picture. Yes I know it's based on a graphich novel, but next time choose a more appropraite character than Sherlock Holmes to star in your explosions film. Hell, a BBC television special would've made an infinitley better adaption.

Believe me. I find Robert Downey Jr. to be a very charismatic actor, and might even make a good Sherlock Holmes, had not the screenplay been filled with explosions and fist-fights.

I'm not dismissing it. It could be a perfectly fine movie. I just can't stand this kind of trend going on in Hollywood. Do producers think that audiences would be unable to stand for Sherlock Holmes unless they add some special effects?

yeah, that's not the movies themselves, but the production companies that helped to fund the movie. They put the stuff in the trailers that they think will help to fill seats. Some of the best movies can be promoted in this way, Avatar, Up In The Air, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, and many other movies that could've helped to have less obnoxious trailers.

Typically, I wouldn't be excited about the commercialization of something as magnificent as Sherlock Holmes, but there's just something about it that makes me curious. I'm also excited to see how they work Irene Adler into it.

Coming to Cannes 2010. ... . . .hopefully
At last, the great Orson Welles' final film is on the brink of completion. Upon principle photography being completed back in 1976 Welles had trouble finding financing to complete his film, and thus had remained incomplete and neglected for over 30 years until recently when Peter Bodanavitch (who also stars in the film) took it upon himself to complete the lost film of the greatest director who ever lived.
It's called The Other Side of the Wind and is filmed in Welles' uniquely experimental style of his late period with hyper-fast cuts and a hallucinatory free-floating camera.
