Hi all,
I am curious about which books parents out there pass on to their teenager(s). Whenever I read something that I like & that think my 15 year old daughter might get into, I pass it on, and more often that not she finishes them and says she enjoys them. I have been doing this since she outgrew Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicolson series. I did this with my now 27 year old son when he was in high school. Here is a recent sampling:
Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids, A Personal Matter -- Kenzaburo Oe
Kafka on the Shore, Hard Boiled Wonderland and The End of the World -- Haruki Murakami
Things Fall Apart -- Chinua Achebe
The Magus -- John Fowles
(ABookOfShortWorksTheNameEscapesMe&ICannotFindAtTheMoment) -- Franz Kafka
If this list is a little heavy on Japanese authors that is because she into Manga & there fore things Japanese tend to interest her. Do any of you do this? What have you passed on & what have they liked?

Well I don't have any kids, but I think that Beloved by Toni Morrison is very good. Also a bit more about teenage angst...but Hairstyles of the Damned is good. Ghostboy...ummm The Great Gatsby...

One I gotta lay on her real soon, when she finishes up a few (like me she starts more than one at a time) is Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. There is an interesting parallel with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein in that the monster is a more fully realized human being than his creator; in much the same way, the tender humanity of the Hailsham students contrasts sharply with the inhuman purpose for which they were brought into existence.
