It has always seemed morbid to me that you go to church to celebrate religion and life and there's Jesus, still hanging there. What is the point supposed to be?

Most of the churches I have been in didnt have these things - but those were mainly presbyterian & I think it is more of a catholic thing. As to the reason: I think it refers to "This do in remembrance of me"

Ok. But why can't the catholics remember him with a statue that isn't so morbid?

Because by dying he gave us life which makes it about life. The crucifix is there to remind us what price are sins and to show us his love because if he had not done that we would not have eternal life.

Wouldn't you know that without the cross?

Not sure if it is just the catholics, my only comment was that I believe it is a catholic thing because I havent seen many presbyterian churches with it, so the catholic part is mereley my supposition. But it is to do with remembrance of him dying on the the cross for the sins of the people, therefore him being on the cross is not really morbid.

Really? Blood coming out of his hands and feet, head hanging down, obviously decesed. Religious folks must have become used to it. Seems morbid to me. Almost scary.

Ok, not sure how much longer this thread will survive the cull.

If they had a pump in the statue which made "blood" run out of the wounds it would be morbid. As it stands however it is no more morbid than poppies on crosses on remembrance sunday.

So painted blood is ok but moving blood is where you draw your line? Dried blood at the scene of a crime is to me more revolting than someone who has a bleeding wound. At least the bleeding wound is still being pumped by a living heart. The dried blood seems futile. Poppies are pretty.
