I know I'm a day late, but:

I honestly can't believe that a ten year old girl could do so much. I really think we need her today. It's so sad. We seem to always lose the people we need most too early. She's one of my heroes and always will be.

Discuss.

Wow, to be perfectly honest I had forgotten about Smith. What a great kid. I remember now seeing in the news about her death at such a terribly young age.

Oh, I know. I really think it's awful that a little girl could do so much and some adults can't do half what she did.

World peace, everyone.

Such a tragically short lifetime of amazing accomplishments.

I just read that article. It is amazing the effect that one young child can have on two nations. God only knows what type of woman she would have been today is she had not died so tragicly.

You're welcome, SleepyWitch. It's really pleasure to share the article.

I can't stress to you enough how much I admire her. When I first read about her I cried like crazy for a while. Especially when I read this line she said, "I remembered that I woke up one morning and wondered if this was going to be the last day of the Earth." How could such a young girl know these things? Think about these things? When I first found out about her, I had recently gone through one of those phases, (but I still am VERY concerned and still think the same thought sometimes) and I felt such a connection right away.

Here's her official website: http://www.samanthasmith.info/

In her speech to Japan in 1983 (Here: http://www.samanthasmith.info/kobe,_japan.htm) She talked about the year 2001 and how she hoped to have an international exchange type program and world peace by then. It's so sad that she didn't even live to see 2001.

What would the world have been like had she never been in a plane crash? Would she have been a presidential candidate? A president? An ambassador?

I think the best way we can make up for her loss and the best way to remember her is to try and make world peace. I know it's basically impossible, but please, everyone. This is the only planet we have. We can't afford to destroy it just because we don't like each other. The first Monday in June is Samantha Smith day, and I know it's past, but let's all please remember her. Let's not just have peace on the first Monday of June every year, but everyday.

A question, I saw from the wiki article that samantha smith day was somewhat of a holiday in the former USSR (if I read that correctly) was anything like that done in the US

Well, it's not on the calendar or anything, so no. Not many people know about her or the day, actually. Which is sad.

I must admit I've never heard of this awesome child before now... I will rectify this situation! I took a quick look at the site...WOW! Must get some sleep before work, but I vow to learn more about Samantha Smith. Thanks for making her known.

she either seemed to know she only had a certan amount of time on this earth, or else she was one of those special people that was amazing. the fact that she wrote a book by age 13, that in and of itself is an achievement.

Yes, yes. I'm tempted to go find a copy of it. It's probably really rare or out of print, though. :(
