View Full Version : Claim to Fame

In another thread some people (I wont mention names...;) ) were veering off topic (which never happens here) and discussing their "claims to fame", such as meeting a famous person or stealing the luggage of a famous person.
that got me wondering about what else could be considered a "claim to fame". I got some media coverage this February for staging a protest against our provincial government (almost got me expelled, i believe), so i was in the paper and on our local tv and radio stations. that was my claim to local fame. i also competed in the "Miss Lady of the Lake" competition when i was WAYYYYY younger and while i didnt win (car accident and years of therapy took care of my chances), i felt famous for a while (all that waving at people in parades will do that to you!)

so i was wondering what is your "claim to fame"? were you in the media? did you meet someone famous? Did you do something amazing that you were recognized for? im sure there are other fame claimer activities that i havent thought of...so what did you do?

Hm, locally I was in the town newspaper I think three times during elementary school, cause I wrote poetry and apparently that was something unusual? I dunno. I was in there.

I'll go for degrees of separation, maybe. :D My dad was in the hospital with a leg cast for a couple months when he was... 12, and living in southern California. Actors came through like hospital clowns or something to cheer up the kids, and so my dad met Ernest Borgnine, and the Skipper from Gilligan's Island (Nathan Hale), and he says some washed up movie actress from a series called "Honey West." LOL The Skipper asked if he wanted his autograph and dad's like, "No!" :D

And my uncle got maced for throwing eggs at President Nixon!! ROFLMAO Some chick had to take him home and wash his eyes out. (Oops, he's a writer. I hope he's not a member of this forum!)

When I was eleven , I was choosen to the children's chorus of state TV. That period was still soviet period , so there was only one state TV. And to get a chance to be on state TV was really "claim to fame"

I won fourth place in the province of alberta twice in a row, for chess. I have also met oscar lopez, and I have seen Britney Spears in pearson.

I wish I could play more chess, Stan. I keep bugging my husband to get me a set, but even then, I don't know if I could get him to play.

When I camped out for tickets for Star Wars Episode1, I was quoted in the local paper. I said I liked the movies because they were a good story that didn't need sex and blood and guts that most other movies highlight.

Other than that, I get hired a lot to play harp and am thinking about recording a CD since all my free demos went so quickly. As a result I got to personally talk to Silvia Woods over the phone when questioning to use her arrangments. Nobody here may know her, but she's certainly famous in harp circles, and since most of my music is from her books, I hold her in high estimation!

I'd kill myself rather than appear on tv... Really, it's something that doesnt attract me at all... I also hate to be the centre of attention and avoid any means to get to that... Which is one reason why I never tried to publish any of my poetry, and even sadly why I gave up dreams like being a journalist.

Though i've been on a radio show...It had been one of my dreams for ages, and the local radio station had a program made by students from high schools of the city, and I partecipated for a period. A guy who was in the project now asked me to join the university's radio program (always on the local radio), but I'm not sure...

Ohter than that...I dont think I've ever met any famous person... Well went to see an italian band when they weren't very famous yet, and got kisses from the singer and another member, who were both very cute at the time :D Uhm and saw some basketball palyers from near when I went to matches, and some cylists when i went to see some races ;) Not much uh? I'm not that interested in fame (unless when i fall in love with writers and would love to meet them...shame they're all dead....).
To quote Michael Stipe (REM): "This fame thing, I don't get it" :D

I saw Sean Connery getting his shoes shined in the airport. I already told you that one huh?

Well, I went to this Metallica concert and MTV panned the front row several times, and I was squashed against the front railing giving the finger to the MTV camera. It kinda sucks that my only TV appearence was on a network that I lothe. :(. Oh yeah, I was also in a band and one of the bands we opened for had opened for POD. Hows that for a stretch?

My mom is disabled and often gets bumped into 1st class on airplanes if there's room. She's seen Liam Neeson, Steven King, Howard Stern, and Tonya Harding.

OOOOHH, I almost forgot! During Gulf War I, I was riding the metro and I saw Colin Powell and Dick Chaney, and I said to my mom "Look mommy! Its Wolf Blitzer!!!" Cheney said to Colin that I must be talking about him (Colin), because he (Cheney) didn't look anything like Wolf Blitzer. :p. I loved Powell and Cheney for years because of that. Its a pity that they turned out to be such power-hungery **************** Hey!!! no Politics guys!!! ;)

I desperately wish to be famous... call it what you will, I call it my... calling. Wow, that was awkward. I was 11 and got on the local news at a pilots convention. And when I was younger I met a whole bunch of the most famous Christian recording artists. Im not into that music as much now, not that it is all bad, just... playing catch up.

I don't have a claim to faim... but keep on watching those papers... because when I get one... my only hope is that it'll go down in history....in a ...good way... of course... yes.

i had a bizarre experience - worked at a cheesesteak place, so much fun to holler orders for a living. :) i worked two days, and three nights; my weekend shift was 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.: a lot of celebs would order food, whole basketball teams, musicians, tv people, locals, they were all just sort of standard, never knew who'd stop by and it was kind of fun. i started collecting autographs for my younger brother, he was 10 at the time.
well, one night around christmas-time i called california and asked if i could get you anyone's autograph whose would you like? he's like, randall cunningham. (then quarterback for philadelphia eagles football team.) so, cool, i fill out an envelope with his address on it. i got called in to work the next day (never scheduled for that day, but sure, no prob) and and hear "randall cunningham's outside." well, i missed seeing him pull up and go into the store next door. he comes out with his nephew and i stare, freeze (lose precious seconds) then run around the counter and can't breathe. wish i'd jumped over the counter. get to his truck and he's started it but rolls down his window (thinking no doubt who's this weird lady with the frantic look on her face. :D)
and i tell him my little brother wants his autograph and i even filled out an envelope for him - i wave it in his face - and he nods his head calmly and he'll give him one, so i run back for a pen hoping he won't drive off.
after he signs it and i say thanks and his nephew finishes staring at me and drives off, i go back inside dancing with my happy envelope. (yay!! :)) everyone wanted to see. turns out he turned down a lot of autograph requests but a coworker saw him go back to write one for a little boy and he makes exceptions for children. years later i saw it on my brother's bedroom on a corkboard message thingy with other autographs and important treasures - movie ticket stubs and the like. it was the coolest experience, and i was so thrilled by what the universe did that day. what an xmas gift that was to give.

I have met a few famous ppl due to contacts in the music/ fashion industry and am always surprised at how normal they are. Most recently I met the gorgeous Micheal Buble at an after show party in his penthouse. (Anyone who can get tickets for his world tour should definately go- the show was fantastic!). There are also a whole stack of famous ppl I have seen or been at events with but not actually spoken to including Claudia Schiffer, Keanu Reeves, Russell Crow, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Orlando Bloom, Linda Evangelista, Lyle McLaughlan, and a range of fashion designers etc.

One famous close miss was Eminem who a friend offered to introduce me to before I knew who he was but I was like "I'm not really interested- I don't like rap much". I still don't like rap but it would have been good to meet him.

I'm not famous myself so the few occasions I've been on TV or in video clips are not very exciting.

*Met Brian Molko - singer in band 'Placebo' and he said I could smack his ***... erm, no thanks *lol*
*Met Harry - not-so-famous British singer - a few times and got a cuddle, a kiss, and a beer from her
*Met Som Wardner - lead vocalist of not-so-famous band, My Vitriol
*Stood next to Mark Lamaar (British comedian/TV presenter) at the bar... was too scared to talk to him because he's very rude on TV!!

Nah, everybody yells at you in the Army. That’s how they communicate. A soldier won’t respect someone who’s not yelling at him. Clark’s delivery did have a sarcastic edge to it though. He’d put you in your place pretty quick.

This may border on hero worship but I’ve never seen anyone who could handle as many pieces of information at one time as Wes Clark. His staff would take days to work up a couple of complex battle plans and he’d come in and nail it in 5 minutes. No maps, no pictures, no notes, he’d change what he needed to change and he was done. It was uncanny. He knew what the enemy was going to do before the enemy knew what they were going to do.

I wasn’t a soldier by the way. I’d been shanghaied to work for his brigade as a forward air controller (that’s an Air Force dude who hangs with the Army).

i guess that's the difference between us and them, eh? in the canadian army, now, its all about human rights. you cannot be yelled at, nor can they call you names if you screw up. maybe thats why there is a problem with respect now. oh i dont know. i just know that my boyfriend teaches basic training sometimes and he says that its nothing like how it was when he went through it. he says that the instructors are under more scrutiny than the students. when he signed up and went through basic, they were still allowed to scream right in your face and treat you like um...poop. yay human rights. i think. maybe?

Sancho
05-05-2004, 01:12 AM
Oh, I don’t know. I’ve spent a fair amount of time with the Canadian Army. They yell too. I’m telling you, if you took away the curse words and the volume, any Army would be unable to communicate; everything would come to a grinding halt. Tell you what though, the Canadian Army had a lot better food.

Mushroom soup pork chops? Mmm-Mmm-good. Used to live in Alaska and go to Edmonton once a year to work with you guys.
