Rich, but I'm really poor--a joke that backfired once when someone on the forum implied he/she thought I was homeless. Mtpspur is a reference to Charles Haddon Spurgeon Pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, London England 1861 - 1892.

My name is Cristina, but even my friends and some teachers calle me 'Fire'. Nick comes from a X-Men character, Jubilee. She's called 'the firecracker' in the comics and I'm a little like her in the way I talk and joke around, so... Fire I've been for a good lot of years :) (the last X is from X-Men, of course).

I was named for my dad, but my mother arraged it so that my name would not be spelled like his nickname. His name was Delmer, nickname Del, so I was named Dale. My middle name is Lynn, which I hate, except that in old English, both names signified "of, or from the valley", which matches. No wonder I go by Pseudonyms! Many people just call me "Blade", which I encourage. But here I am Pen, Uncle Pen, or something like that. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l108/AbsalomKane/Smilies/Dragon.gif

Well, as Dale was my maiden name I think you have a wonderful name Pen! And you're right, the name 'Dale' refers to a valley 'over the hills and dales', and 'the Yorkshire Dales' (which are in Yorkshire, England!).

My first name is Belinda, which I hated when I was young because it was unusual and so it made me stand out. Now I love it because it is unusual! Belinda means 'snake' or 'dragon', and even that doesn't put me off!

My sister, on the other hand, was a little unfortunate. Her name is Deborah, and where we lived there was a park called 'Debdale park', so you can imagine what she was called most of the time!

Apparently there are languages that don't have something like P, and basque doesn't have V either, at least I think it was V, but I might be wrong...
And well only Niamh's post reminded me that we don't have K W J X Y either, because it's not like I think 'we don't have them', I just think it's you who have them extra ;) (although we use them in foreign-imported words, and J and X used to exist in Latin...well long story I guess).

I guess I should add that my name is Elisa, like Elise but with -a LOL

I'm like you, my real name is Lisa which is more common than dirt. My parents almost named me Sina after a great grandmother but decided at the last minute that was too unusual so they went with a name that 7 out of 10 parents named their daughters during that time. When I was younger, I whined and whined that I would've much preferred Sina but I'm sure if they had gone with that, I would've complained just as bitterly...I'm impossible to please. :p :D

We have Ä and Ö, which many languages are missing

We lack (they are there in the alphabet but they are never used, except in quote words and foreign names) C, W, X, Y, Q, whereas we have Ä, Ö, Ü and Õ which many languages are missing. We wonder how do they get by without them. (plus, we have Š and Ž, but they are not really our own, we suspect a slavic origin so they don't count)
"Õunapuude õitseaeg on jüriöö ülestõusust jõululaupäevani." is a nice phrase in Estonian to give foreigners who try to learn the language headaches with.

"Õunapuude õitseaeg on jüriöö ülestõusust jõululaupäevani."

My oh my, that's a hard one! :p I too wonder what it means...

My first name is Pedro. Portuguese's equivalent for Peter. Since you're talking about languages, I'll name a few of Portuguese's features. All "h"s are silent; we have "ç", which is equal to "ss" (or to german's "ß"); and we have "á", "à" (these two sound the same, both of them being a harsh and open "a"), "â" and "ã" (these two are pretty similar too, they sound like a nasal "a").

The combination of "ç" and "ã" is simply impossible for a native english speaker to pronounce. The word "combination" in portuguese, "combinação", is supposed to be read more or less like "combinassaum", but english speakers usually pronounce it like "combinassao". We are said to have a harsh, rough-sounding language, but I would have never though of that!

Niamh (or should I say Neev? :p), I find it absolutely mind-blowing that your name is supposed to be read that way! I have always read your name hearing my inner voice say "niam". It'll be hard to adjust it to say "neev", it's usually rather stubborn :p

And by the way (this post is becoming far longer that I had imagined!), Niamh, if you Irish don't have the letter J, how to you write one of your nation's hero's name, James Joyce? :p

In Finnish we don't use much pre- and postpositions. Instead of them we have a lot of suffixes. That's why some Finnish words can be really long:

epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydellänsäkäänköhän

Okay, I've never heard anyone use the word, but everybody knows it

Annamariah
05-30-2007, 06:41 AM
No, one word isn't enough :D The translation would be: "Wonder if he can also ... with his capability of not causing things to be unsystematic."

"For example, the official Guinness world record is Finnish epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydellänsäkäänköhän "Wonder if he can also ... with his capability of not causing things to be unsystematic". It has the derived word epä·järje·st·el·mä·llis·tyttä·mä·ttö·m·yys as the root and is lengthened with the inflectional endings -llä·nsä·kään·kö·hän. However, this word is grammatically unusual, since -kään "also" is used only in negative clauses, but -kö (question) only in question clauses."

Really? oh good! Because it's really bothered me since the time I was 8. I was in england for my aunt's wedding, and a lady said to me (you have to understand that I have three older brothers) "Your mother finally had a girl and gave her a boy's name!" It was aweful because I was so young.

United States

Known as the Hokey Pokey, it became popular in the USA in the 1950s. Larry LaPrise, Charles Macak and Tafit Baker were granted the copyright for the song in 1950. According to popular legend they created this novelty dance in 1949 as entertainment for the ski crowd at Idaho's Sun Valley resort. However, as the dance was wildly popular with American servicemen and Britons during WWII, this date cannot be correct.

There is another contrary belief that states that Robert P. Degan and Joseph P. Brier, both natives of Scranton, Pennsylvania, wrote the original song as confirmed by the U.S. Copyright Office in 1996, thus giving two groups of musicians the rights. Ray Anthony's big band recording of the song turned it into a nationwide sensation by the mid-1950s (The "Hokey Pokey" appeared on the B side of Anthony's "Bunny Hop" single). Its rights were purchased in the mid-1960s by country-western music star Roy Acuff's publishing company, Acuff-Rose.)

British Isles

Known as the Hokey Cokey it has virtually the same lyric, tune, and dance style as the U.S. version and was a music hall song and novelty dance popular in England in the mid-1940s. "Hokey-cokey" is also known as "Okey-cokey", perhaps following London Cockney pronunciation. It is popularly regarded as traditional.

There is a claim of authorokship by the British/Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy, responsible for the lyrics to popular songs such as the wartime We're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line and the childrens' song Teddy bears' picnic. Sheet music copyrighted in 1942 and published by Campbell Connelly & Co Ltd, agents for Kennedy Music Co Ltd, styles the song as "the Cokey Cokey".

Confusingly another claim is made by or on behalf of British bandleader Gerry Hoey from around 1940, under the title "the Hoey Oka".

Necessarily these claims cannot both be correct. Interestingly perhaps both cite earlier works: In the case of Jimmy Kennedy's claim the song is "founded on a traditional Canadian song". In the case of Gerry Hoey the song is reportedly based on "an old nursery rhyme".

So, what's in a name right? A cokey by any other name would still....whatever. ;)

 Thats a change! most people read it as Ni am huh. I get a good laugh out of it in work.:p When my name use to be on the roster in work people would realise that niamh on the roster was me as they knew how to pornounce my name and not spell it. There were a few incedents years ago where someone was looking at what shop they were to be in and saw my name and started asking who ni am huh is. I couldnt stop laughing and she got embarressed when she realise it was me!:p
Alot of the polish in work cant pronounce it properly and it comes out as Nief (chief with an N at the beginning.)
Neeve, Neve, Nieve and Niev are fine, but Niamh is the proper gaelic spelling and the only spelling you'll find in Ireland, the others would be more anglicsised versions used in the states and other places.
