I thought I'd start a thread for bad habbits, an either discuss them, or ask for help overcoming them, or share stories, a sort of bad habbits club/group :D

I'll start:

My bad habbit is/was/I'm working on it smoking. I'm quitting by drinking tea whenever I want to go for a smoke, It was suggested to me by a mentor of mine, it helped him to quit smoking, so now I'm trying to replace the desire for nicotine with that of drinking tea.

Great idea for a thread.

And since you mentioned it first, it's time to admit that smoking is my problem too:(.
I've started in university and i didn't used to smoke much and did not see it as a habbit. Now, a few years later i cannot stop.
I don't drink tea, unless i am sick ......... is this working for you?????

I think i am not motivated enough to quit and try to delude myself that i will quit smoking, soon, in the near future ........

well, the tea is sort of working for me, I find I drink alot of tea, but going through the whole works of creating a good cup of tea seems to keep me focused on my goal...I would suggest to start to try to stop now, rather than later, I kept putting in off, and eventually it took some friends, with courage I mite add, to say that I smoked too much. (In fact the whole thing was a bit reminiscent of lotr..."you smoke too much pip" :D )

And you reduced the cigarettes or stoped for good? When did you start?

Well, technically its been stopped, but on long work days, I take alot of bathroom trips.

I originally started smoking in university, and then increased when I was working as assist network administrator

Stan, smoking is my bad habit too. I've been smoking since the age of 16 (and i am almost 26). Although the last year and a half i smoke only one cigarete per day. I achieved that by thinking intently on the word CANCER.

It sounds so familiar.....

I've tried to reduce them and i've been even counting them daily, but stoped that because it was just stupid.
I know i'm just making up excuses for myself ....

Good luck in reducing the bathroom trips;)

(I just noticed that we have the same posts 321)
Hi again Moira.
It's not that difficult. Start reading about the negative efects of smoking, find images in the net depicting body parts full with cancer (i know this is gross but it's going to schock you so much. that it might actually help;) ), avoid people who are heavy smokers and places full of smoke (such as cafeterias, clubs etc) and start chewing gum;) . And prior to start all these it is a good idea, the night before to smoke very much in order to get sick of it.
Now i am proud to say that i control my cigarete craving. And although my boyfriend smokes and my bussiness partner smokes i can easily resist the temptation. Actually i am annoyed sometimes by their smoking ;) . Hope it works for you :)

I have an incredible amount of bad habits. I am really bad about procrastinating as well. I could list more but I think I will do that later...;)

I quit smoking in 1991. I found cold turkey method worked the best, but that isn't the case with everybody. I heard those nicotine gums and patches work fairly well and are available over the counter nowadays, at least here in the States.

I’m with Kathy; cold-turkey is the ticket. I went cold turkey on tobacco fifteen years ago and never looked back. Okay, so I climbed the freakin’ walls for two weeks and was mean to children and animals during that time, but afterwards…nothing…I swear, nothing; I’ve never craved it since.

Good for you! Sometimes cold turkey is the only way...I think if a person says to themselves that they are just going to cut down then they still have cigarettes available to them. Then it becomes easy to say "Oh, I had a bad day, I just need a quick cigarette even though I already smoked my allotment for today". Then before you know it, the allotment creeps up because bad days are often the rule, not the exception. There is always an excuse for a smoker to have a cigarette, so removing them completely helps eliminate temptation. At least I think so.

No...although it would seem like it should be. A cold turkey sandwich would be preferable actually. When somebody goes cold turkey, it means they give something up completely. In other words, when I quit smoking cold turkey, I took every single cigarette I had and flushed them down the toilet.

But also without the stench and carcinogens of burning tobacco...:)

I am by all accounts impossible to live with anyway. :p You know that old saying Cap'n Stan...practice makes perfect. Keep practicing quitting. :thumbs_up

I smoked my last cigarette on April 30th 2006. I had been trying to quit for a while, but I didn't smoke that much to begin with --- I would come home from work and go out on the porch and light up and proceed to smoke about 5 - 7 cigaretters until I went to bed (give or take a few on certain days). I was chewing nicotine gum and smoking at the same time. Then, we moved to a new better apartment and I was able to quit. I was also tired of smelling cigarettes.

Sometimes, a major change in your environment can help you make a change in your routine.

Now I need to develop a regular exercise routine.

 All right, I see. I imagined the lot of you running for cold turkey every time you felt the need to light a cigarette :D. My friend actually tried something similar, filling an empty cigarette packet with hazelnuts and eating one every time she wanted to smoke. Didn't help, though.

One of my bad habits is that I am usually unable (lazy enough) to control my bad habits...

I believe it would actually be easier to list my good haibts ;) Anyways, procrastination, need to chew on something (There are probably 10 chewed up pen caps around my house somewhere because I couldn't find any gum), swearing, being lazy, arguing for the sake of arguing, being annoying on purpose, and being childish when I probably shouldn't.

I was flipping channels the other day and came across some old movie and these two women were talking on the phone. They would show one woman smoking a cigarette while talking on the phone in her office and then they went to the other woman who was lounging in her bathrobe on a chaise lounge in her home, smoking a cigarette.

The thing about cigarettes is that they smell so bad! They stink up everything (and they kill you, but who cares because you're going to die anyway) and yet through the power of television (or so they say) and marketing via TV, magazines and billboards, people smoked cigarettes, continued to smoke cigarettes and believed that they enjoyed those cigarettes. And I am not condemming anyone because I was one of them. But really, they are so nasty! If they could come up with cigarettes that left you and your house smelling like patchouli, then I would smoke (because cancer doesn't bother me --- I will probably die prematurely anyway from something else) but while I am here on this earth I don't want to live in and smell filth.

Images of smoking are the hardest thing to avoid, and just wait until you try to quit. You will see them everywhere, and the craving will kick in.

For me the problem is not the addiction to the nicotine but the addiction to the habbit itself. I cannot isolate from everyone in my life who smokes and it would be so hard to resist when i have people around me who smoke.
