"If he had seen what had been sawn he would still be alive today."

So we are talking about someone who died.
Was his/her death an accident?
Did he/her commit suicide?

'what had been sawn' by who?
My questions:
- was he alone when he died/committed suicide?
- was he outdoors?
- did something (a rock maybe?) make impact on him?
- was he blind?

Is this a murder/mystery situation?
Or more a play on words?

Did he kill himself/ herself for money? Love?

Did DP commit suicide on purpose?
On accident?
did DP not see something, time pass, and THEN commit suicide?
or did DP commit suicide pretty much at the same time they didn't see something?

Was the DP at one time able to see?
Did the DP commit suicide because they were depressed?
If so, were they depressed because they were blind?

If so, was he waiting for someone to 'warning'/tell him about it?

Was the DP a man and the other person a woman?
Did he hear something and since he wasn't able to see misunderstood the situation?
You said he wasn't always blind. Is the reason for him going blind relevant?

HA! A slight bit of investigative work led me to dictionary.com to look up "sawn".
Was it his cane that had been sawn?
And therefore his cane was shorter, he thought he was growing, and the prospect of buying a whole new wardrobe drove him over the edge?

So . . . the cane was shorter than before?
He misunderstood the cane was shorter, and thought he was taller?
Or . . . he misunderstood the cane was shorter and thought things in his apartment had moved?
Is the method of suicide relevant?
Did only a short amount of time pass between the misunderstanding and the suicide (e.g. within an hour)?
Or a lot of time (e.g. more than a week)?
Are the cane being shorter and the suicide directly linked (e.g. The cane was shorter, he thought something else, so he committed suicide)?

 Okay... here goes:
He was in the circus as the world's smallest man (who happened also to be blind). When his "friend" sawed bits of his cane away, he thought he was growing and therefore would be out of a job (as he had no other marketable skills), so he killed himself.
Am I close? Did I miss anything?
