On this glorious sunny sunday i find myself trapped by invisible ropes to my laptop as i have a dead line and a loooooovely essay to write.

Ive decided to write about (see title and forget the sun)!

Paying close attention to the work of any two writers you have studied on the module, assess the degree to which poets or dramatists consider themselves outside the times in which they write.

In order for me to answer this question I have decided to look at Alfred Lord Tennyson, his life and his elegy In Memoriam. Within this piece he discusses themes outside of his time and examines his grief for his lost friend Arthur Hallam. I believe Tennyson wrote this as a way to control his grief but also to ensure his friend wasn’t forgotten throughout the years, this is an idea I will develop throughout the rest of my essay. I will also discuss Wordsworth in my essay as he is unwittingly linked Tennyson’s success in that with his death Tennyson finally achieved the public popularity previously denied to him. I will look at Wordsworth’s similar poems of mourning regarding the enigmatic Lucy in ‘Three years she grew’ and ‘Strange fits of passion I have known’ and look at how his poetry he practically launched the Romantic Era with his new style of writing that showed emphasis on simplicity, beauty and nature which gave way to several poets who believed their writing would transcend the times and they would be remembered as trailblazers.

• Wordsworth’s poems his affects in Romanticism
• Wordsworth’s death and Tennyson’s popularity
• Tennyson’s Elegy and death

thats that, i mean im not well read on Tennyson and have read In memoriam today which took up more than an hour, i have left this essay til the last minute to shamefully admit so if anyone has any ideas or thinks i could change something i would be very very very appreicative!!!

I do heart Wordsworth though, Three Years she Grew is my favourite poem by him, its just so beautiful!!!
:p

Good day Shibbydm,

Great topic! and I'm sure you'll find lofty ideas to write about. And don't worry, I always write my essays at the last moment too. Guess what, I'm sitting for my 19th century poetry course's exam on May 30th, with the very same poems you mentioned in the syllabus...so, I'll be glad to discuss them with you.Best of luck with your essay.

Regards,,,
Sarah
