Hello Chaps and Chapesses,

Apart from reading books what is your Day Job?

I am a Computer Programmer :-)

People like me have made the whole internet possible - we have potentially connected all people on earth to each other - eliminated all distance between them :-) so you should all be grateful to us for CyberSpace and making this forum possible. :-)

A person's job can tell a lot about a person :-) For example - "Computer Programmer" - instantly conjures of an image of a "Nerd" or a "Geek" but I am neither :-) Though I have no problem with the word "Geek" :-)

Anyway what's your Day Job and do you enjoy it :-)

Regards,
Lote

I am a Computer Programmer :-)

And my job is to find faults in a computer programmer's work  So that makes me a Software Tester :D I am told that a programmer and a tester do not get along well and also that developer's dread us :p. I am yet to encounter such a situation, though. But, I would love to see the troubled expression on a programmer's face :p. How, I love to spread fear...

So, what comes to mind when a person thinks of a tester -- Oh, the DREADFUL one

Anyway what's your Day Job and do you enjoy it :-)

On a serious note --

As for liking it, it's a mixed emotion. I love my work when I am the busiest, have tonnes of things to do and when at the end of the day I can say -- It was a good productive day.

I hate it when at times I am at bench.

So, my liking this job has got nothing to do with testing, but with being busy and having things to do.

I don't think I can say that I am a Nerd / Geek / some very intelligent person. I am just a simple person who happens to have landed in this job, and I am doing my bit. :p

:D :D

I am the Logistics coordinator of a clothing manufacturing company (transports, import - export, clients, suppliers..... etc).
It is a good job, sometimes a lot of overtime required but nowadays we are having a really peacefull period ....... which is good:).

I have a part time job working in a mall selling clothing to young ladies (ages 6-14ish). It has its ups and downs. I love my work team and the plugs that we get for a job well done.

What I don't like is sometimes these young ladies come equipped with attitude and make my job a living nightmare (think of the mess in the change rooms, for one thing, with these little miss attitudes). :flare:

Nonetheless, it is a fun job and life is usually smooth in my little shoppe.

Great thread, Lote! :)

Madhuri,

And my job is to find faults in a computer programmer's work

LOL :-) Our work is logical - there are no faults - HONEST!!! :-)
The fault is always with the Software Designer - they are artists and don't know thing about coding. :-)
Or the User not knowing how to use the Software :-)

And besides the code works PERFECTLY FINE ON MY PC! :-)

So that makes me a Software Tester

No wonder you sounded so so familiar!!! :-)

I am told that a programmer and a tester do not get along well and also that developer's dread us.

LOL :-) Dread you? Nay - you lot makes us more intelligent that we are :-)
Just kiddin :-)

But don't worry I am very easy to get along because I am a Poet - Programmer. My code is like a Sonnet!!!
Just kiddin :-)

I am yet to encounter such a situation, though.
But, I would love to see the troubled expression on a programmer's face . How, I love to spread fear...

Ah the Power - but you are a women? - you don't need anymore Power. More Power will just corrupt you :-)

So, what comes to mind when a person thinks of a tester -- Oh, the DREADFUL one

Nay. I love them because I was one initially :-)

As for liking it, it's a mixed emotion. I love my work when I am the busiest, have tonnes of things to do and when at the end of the day I can say -- It was a good productive day.

Proves you are not lazy :-)

I don't think I can say that I am a Nerd / Geek / some very intelligent person.

Geek is an Intelligent Person who knows what he wants. Nerd is a social outcaste :-)

I am just a simple person who happens to have landed in this job, and I am doing my bit.

Me too. I am an ordinary joe bloggs ;-)

I am a Quality engineer. Thus I spend most of my time at work keeping our Quality Management System up to date: Updating written procedures and info on our intanet, performing internal audits, taking part in improvement projects, training people and so on... I am also involved in our environmental & energy and h&S management systems.

It feels quite rewarding to see improvement you have been a part of, and I enjoy what I am doing most of the time. Sometimes, though, there can be too much of it... I haven't had much free time those last few weeks (Which is why I have not been posting much).

Yeah, student here. Though I'm by no means costly to maintain, I'm still a sponge, and I've had enough of that, I really should be on the look-out for part-time employment, you know, start giving something back :)

By the way, I find it terrific that so many of you work in areas so unrelated with literature (I'm a literature student, you see). Your being here means you are very versatile, and thus even more interesting! My hat's off to you :)

I know exactly what you mean. ;) I haven't worked for years now and it gets irritating sometimes when all my friends now have a job and are sooo independent I am not in, their eyes,..but things will change..soon I hope:p

My mum is a cake decorator and works in the Bakery. She doesn't speak English very well so when she's alone I mostly spend my time translating, carrying around stuff, cleaning and amateur decorating.

They JUST DON'T WANT TO HIRE ME! why am I working for freeeeeeeeee?! :flare:

I guess I should say I work there, then. Unless they hire me. Which they should since I'm always there doing stuff.

I'm mostly a student and a stay at home mother. I work a part time job on the weekends for Nutro pet food. I believe the current term is Pet Food Specialist at the moment. I basically tell people about our food and advertise the product. It is an alright job. It isn't something I wish to do forever, but it is very part time which fits into life at the moment. Full time work isn't easy with two kids and a husband with an erratic schedule. I'm looking for a marketing position that I'll start after graduating college and moving back to Ohio.

You know, they HAVE TO PAY YOU! :flare: I am amazed that this is allowed. You must do something about it. If you are doing a service for the store, they MUST pay you for it. Call, or have your Mother call, the Home Office today!
If we even call someone on the phone when they are off the clock we have to pay them for the time they are on the phone with us. It's idiots like the ones running your Bakery that give Wal-Mart such a bad name.:flare:

I am an assistant director at a daycare that cares for infants and toddlers. In addition to caring for the little nippers, I work primarily with the 1 year olds, I'm also responsible for writing the newsletter, filling out food program and social service forms, staff scheduling, planning art projects and whatever other busy work the director doesn't feel like doing.

During the day I rule the Infinite Universe, Mars, and the Nation of the Glorious Turnip.

Sometimes, when I'm bored, I sing out of tune.
This helps keep the evil guinea pig armies from invading turnip controlled land, the Guinea pigs really dislike me singing out of tune. Some belief it interferes with their communication, which primarily revolves around whistling in tune.
I like to think they have no sense of good taste.

Not really, it all comes down to good management, that way, I don't really have to do much at all, as most of it is delegated to my command staff.

But yeah, there are a lot of people who fetch coffee around here. :)

student (working on my graduation thesis - equivalent to M.A. thesis), do I like my "job"? depends.. I like it when I have a fixed schedule and courses I have to do homework for... but most of the time it's just hanging around with no compulsory courses to take, which makes me really sluggish

tutor.fun! :) I love torturing little first-year students :)

volunteering with the Red Cross Youth: my best friend and me run a group for 8-12 y/o kids.. but that's not a job, really, it's free time :)

Primarily an anthropology and biology student at the university.

My first job is a specifications editor for an engineering company that does mechanical, plumbing and electrical for commercial buildings, schools and churches. I do all the written work for the drawings that go through to clients. When that is going slow, I double as a secretary.

My second job is at the university...well not really. I work with the school as a transfer link mentor. I myself transferred from a community college into the university, so I go to college fairs and tell other community college students how to do the same thing. I answer their questions and help them figure out their current academic standing, if need be, refer them to my boss who is head of undergraduate transfer recruitment. I basically represent the school, make it easier for students to find answers, and say "come to our university!!" ;)

I like both the jobs, only as a mentor, I do a lot of driving (like all over southern california) and then sometimes my primary job goes really slow.

A really cool note about the college fairs, we are the only university represented at these fairs by students attending the university...it normally would be a professional like my boss. Schools like Berkley and UCLA don't like us too much, but my boss's philosophy is that we are the ones going through the system, we are current in what is going on...a professional also can't answer questions like "do you like the dorms?" or "what's the student life like?" :D ....not all our questions are on academics and requirements.
