Anyone in this forum read any of L. M. Montgomery's novels? If any one has, I'm starting a thread for general discussion of her books. Tell me what you think about them. :-)

I like her books, but that is too general. I wouldn't even know where to begin discussing them...

love Anne's character!

LMM is one of my favorite authors, I have read all of her Anne books and the related Chronicles.

Which book was your favorite? Mine has to be the first and the last.

I couldn't begin to say my fav, all of hers are fab
I read her first collection of journal entries, anyone else?

Oh, I haven't read her journal entries yet, although I've read most of her books and many of her short stories. My favourite by far is The Blue Castle (I want to live on Mistawis!), and I like A Tangled Web as well - the interconnection of all the different stories is wonderful.

I love Anne of Green Gables and have now passed on the love to my 9 year old. My children new about kindered spirits long before they read the book. I loved her fun loving nature and Montgomery"s understanding of how a 12 year old girl thinks is as true today as it was then. Something's never change.

I know they were made a while ago, but what did you guys think of the film adapations of the Anne series? I loved them personally, i was finally able to put a face on one of my favorite characters

You would not believe how many times I have seen those movies. I loved them way before I ever sat down and read the whole series of books. :thumbs_up The last part of the series only came out a couple of years ago, so they are not that old. I think that it was a wonderful conclusion, but I still sort of wish that they would go on and do one inspired by "Rainbow Valley" or "Rilla of Ingleside," there's the potential there.

I love the film series so much - I had read the books first but none of the characters jarred the ideas of them I had in my head too much. I was sad about the addition they made not too long ago, though, where they totally depart from Montgomery's story and have Gilbert go to war or something? I haven't seen it, but I don't understand why they would make a different story when there was already an existing one written by the author. Anyone seen these and care to share what they thought?

I LOVE LM Montgomery and Anne of Greengables and everything. Really, have ever since my best friend lent me the first book (Anne of G) years ago. I was maybe 13 then. I still love LMM and read everything by her. Theres still some of her books I havent read beckause i cant find them in the library or the bookstore here in Finland. I buy them whenever I get the chance. (One is all the way from Amsterdam.) Actually Ive got Mistres Pat unread rigth now. (Thankgod for the summer. Now Ive got time to read it.) LMM just has got a wondeful way of writing. Its the atmosphere and everything.

But actually: the latest thing by LMM I have read is her Selected journals. Have read part 1,2, & 3, and am dying to read part 4 which I have found out is available thou not here in Finland. Stupid. Well anyway. It was really a pleasure to read the diaries. They give an other perspective on the books. Maud Montgomery was a wondeful admirable person. It was nice to read her own story in ther own words. I still love the books thou I know what was behind them.

About the films: Havent seen them. But I would really like to, but u cant borrow them from anywhere here in Finland. Hope they will send some on tv sometime again. Have heard Anne -series have been on tv here sometime, but that was before I had read the books. Too bad. Im really curious about the films.

And last but not least: PEI! It must be a wonderful place! Lucky Kiwi Shelf who has been there!!!!!!!!! I dream of going there. My dad and I planed to go there (or to Canada)this summer, but well, it costs a lot etc and we cant go anywhere anyway this summer... But some day Ive gotta se that place.

I am interested in the fact you have read all of LMM Selected Journals, I started the first one and it didn't draw me in at all, so I read until a certain year and put it aside until the urge struck me to pick it back up.

As for PEI, it's a beautiful province, you really should visit it should you have the chance. With my location in Canada, I have grown up with LMM, and I adored going to the house. I was young when I went though, and had just barely reached the age to be able to read her works. It would be several years later before I read them all, so I would like to go again with a more aged and educated mind. :p

Kiwi Shelf: Too bad u didnt like The Selected JOurnals. I found them very ineresting, but I can understand that some people concider them boring. There is some stuf that is pretty irrelevant to people who didnt know her, like always with peoples personel journals. Nice u finsished anyway. Did u get to read part 4 too? Cos I didnt.

Kiwi Shelf: I dont know about the later volums of the journals being more ineresting than the first. It depends on what youre inerested in. The first one was from here younger years. Im not sure which i thought the most ineresting. Maybe the first one. I think it was there the most things happend. But Im not sure where the second volume starts. Her getting married maybe? She gets kinda bitter in her older yeras. But I think it very inersting to read about what made her write her books...

Well anyway. Earlier I was saying here that I wanted to see the Green Gables tv-series nad complained they werent shown in here in Finland. And guess what they started sending here a couple of weeks ago!!!??? Anne of Green Gables! In lucky! I must say I really love the series. Megan Follows is great as Anne. The serie are so beautiful and funny. I really do love em. Are the series really filmed on PEI??

I haven't seen any of the movies. I've read about them, though. A lot of people were indeed upset over the third movie moving in an entirely different direction. In the movie they basically skip most of the book story and fast forward to World War I. I believe Anne moves to New York and Gilbert ships out for war. Somehow during the course of the story, Anne sets out to find Gilbert. It seems pretty obvious to me that Sulliven-entertainment ment the series to end with this one.

There was a lot of resentment. But some people disregarded the huge story leap and realized that Anne is still the same, imaginative, free-spirited and lovable Anne she is in LMM's books. With that in mind, I will happily watch it, if ever given the chance.

I think that the third movie is quite good, but it really doesn't follow the novels at all. That slightly disappointed me at the time, but I enjoyed the move anyways.

The 1st time i ever heard of Anne i was eight years old; I saw the cartoon series on tv and since then she's been my heroine. I only found out about the books recently.
Has i got older i came to realize that the majotity of the great stories that we see on tv or at the cinema are based on books: the three Musqueteres; Tom Sawyer; Huckleberry Finn; etc. So, such a beautiful storie like Anneīs had to be taken of a book too . However, no one i knew who remembered the cartoon series, knew who was the author of the book.
I finally found it out on the internet and managed to read the 1st three books and the 5th book of "The Anne Series" on the net... But i canīt find any of LMM's books in any Bookstores or libraries in my country and that's very frustrating, especially because i'm such a great fan of the determinated, strong-willed, red-headed little orphan girl who couldn't help being loved.
Can any of you help me, i'm desperated! I would love to read the other books of "The Anne Series" and all the other works of LMM's i can put my hands on. Does any one knows of any bookstores were i can buy new, unabrideged, LMM's books? I would be very thankful if you could help me.
Best Compliments,
Hopefully, Liz

I live in Canada, I can find her books anywhere.

You have no idea how lucky you are!
Thank you for your sugestion Kiwi Shelf. I've been struggling with that possibility but the idea isn't very appealing to me because i can't see the books before i buy them and be sure that they have the qualities i'm looking for: new, not used, and unabridged being the most important ones. I have to confess, i'm a little bit picky when it comes to the books i buy.
I've been looking at Amazon's and Ebay's sites but i can't find anywhere there where i can specify exactly what i wish for, and i'm not in for a dissapointment. There's nothing like entering a bookstore and check out the books yourself.
The prospect that i'll never find and get to read those books is starting to make me feel very sad because i've been looking for them for a long time and i just love Anne, she's been an inspiration for me since i was eight.
Well, thank you very much for your sugestion anyway, it's very thoughtful of you.
Best Compliments,
Liz

You can download all the Anne books and most of LMM's other stuff by internet. [As you have allready done with a few]

Lizzie

Unfortunaly EAP i've downloaded all the LMM's books that i could from the internet. The 4th and 6th Anne's books, the Emily Series Books, The Pat's books and all her other works except "Kilmany of the Orchard", "The Story Girl", "The golden Road" and the two Chronicles of Avonlea books, are forbidden for me until they become public domain.
Right now they are under copyright laws, preventing me from downloading them and even from just reading them on the net, and it will be so for quite a few years... But thank you very much for your sugestion anyway, it was very nice of you.

Well Kiwi Shelf i'm begining to think that Canada = Heavenly Bliss too; and i'm getting so desperate that the idea of buying the books on the internet it's geting more and more appealing by the minute. If you don't mind i'd like to get some information from you about it.
As i've already told you i'm a little picky when it comes to buying my books and i'd like to be as absolutely sure as one can be that i'll get exactly what i want; so this is what i would like to know: On Amazon's site we find a variaty of choises when it comes to the book's characteristics: the type of edition, the type of cover, abridged or unabridged copy, used or new copy... -- and i'm not talking about the currency problem that arises in my specific case!
When you find what you're looking for and decide to order it where on the request order do you specify those product characteristics? -- When you say all your books come from Amazon youīre saying that you buy then on the internet, right?
I'm asking because i've looked it up and i haven't found any kind of formulary where i could do that. If you could shade some light over the matter i'd apreciate it.
I hope i'm not bothering you too much though.
Thank you so much for everything.

Best compliments for the two of you,
Liz

I am almost postive that Amazon only has one book choice for LMM books. At least as far as I have searched. The style that is available is what I have at home, and I personally like it. I might also add that if you buy her books used, all the books I have bought by this formula have never even been read.

Lizzie, the texts you mentioned are avalable from Project Gutenberg, Australia.

Emily of New Moon (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0201141h.html)

Emily Climbs (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0300151h.html)

Emily's Quest (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0300161h.html)

Pat of Silver Bush (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0201061h.html)

Mistress Pat (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0201071h.html)

Anne of Windy Populars (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks01/0100251h.html)

Anne of Ingleside (http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks01/0100281h.html)

They are avalable under Australian Guntenberg site because Australian Law limits the time of copyright to 50 years instead of the usual 70 years in United States and many other countries of the world.

Thanks Kiwi Shelf.

I know that EAP but i read the information discloused on The Gutenberg Project Australia about copyright and was my understanding, after i consulted the list of countries which, like the USA, have a copyright protection of life+70 years, that my country is also under the same restrictive law. So it is, that i canīt even read them on the internet for that would be a violation of the copyright rights. But thank you again for your help and interest.

Best Compliments for you both,
Liz

Anyway, does anyone know a website or even the names and writers of some of Anne - or even Emily's - favourite poems?

I do agree that the movies did take a huge leap by about 30 yrs but the spirit of Anne is still there but I also feel sad that they made that huge of a leap because it does not alow room for the rest of that series to be made in to a film.

The Emily series is roughly based on her. If you read any of the autobiographical stuff about LMM then you'll see some of the resemblance of Emily and LMM.
