When two people get together, they decide the terms of the arrangement.

We don't live in a black and white world and labels are just that. If I spit in my hand and tell you it's gold, does that make it so? No. The same principle applies.

why would you tell yourself that is gold? The question is the quality of the belief. If one believes he does, if one does not believe he carrys on, in his routine of function as usual. When something new comes he adds it along.

Wife should be forever, but these days the divorce rate is soaring. I know of three other people who graduated when I did that are still married to the same person and one of them is my brother-in-law and the other two are married to each other. Wife and I married in 1979 as did Bev and Steve and we are still together, and both families have three kids.

Well, a man could have a wife and girlfriend at the same time. To that man, the difference between the two terms means very little. And we can talk all day about the difference between the two, but some men and women will pay little heed to that.

That´s what I think too; girlfriends and boyfriends are supposed to know each other best, to know their flaws and qualities, spending some time together, knowing their life style, families, idiosyncrasies, and so on, before deciding to stay together for good.
And when they decide it, they become... what? husband and wife, companions, partners... it doesn´t matter, the name they call each other depends on what they agreed, and in the extent of their compromise (or will to compromise).

Of course, a man and a woman can be husband and wife and still be boyfriend and girlfriend to each other, and that´s very good. Again, it depends on them...;)

Tradition. Traditionally people would get married for economic, social, and sexual reasons (being a woman and a man could not have sexual relations "legally" under Christian law without being married first, otherwise things could get ugly, and even go as far as them burning the girl as a witch) Now we just maintain the tradition that if people love each other, or want to raise a family together, they get married.

Personally, I would like to get married. I feel that it shows commitment to one's partner.

There are a flaw I see in the marriage in America.

Some Husbands have more than 1 child from different women as much as 8 different women but are not married and that is consider legal. While marrying more than 1 is not legal. Problem : benefits for a couple from State

Next thing is you all have told me what is a wife but not what is a girlfriend. Especially today little girls desires a boyfriend very early, I think this starts from disney, while boys starts from their older sibblings and the concept of coolness.
