I had a little beetle
I called him Theobald James
But Nursey says it's nasty, Nursey says it's wicked, Nursey says it's cruel to call a little beetle names.
I said to my beetle, "Oh Mr Beetle please, I wish I was a beetle more than anything far!"
And Nursey says he answered,
Nursey says he shouted,
"You wish you were a beetle, you little s***, you are."

My papa used to tell me this when I was but a wee girlie.

a pocket full of posy
a tissue a tissue
we all fall down.

(i know its a verse about the plague but it was a nursery rhyme to us growing up. dont even think i wrote it out properly!)

Actually I can rember dozens because I have a habit of singing/murmmuring them half under my breath without even noticing when Im annoyed and when the youngest sister was tiny I once spent over an hour just saying nursery rhymes to get her to sleep and you couldnt say the same one twice :D

(The verb in the last sentence depends on which version of nursery rhymes you have read. It varies.)

Tom tom the pipers song
he learned to play when he was young

Now Tom he did play with such skill
he please both boys and girls

This song is really longt and Im a bit fuzzy on it he ends up playing and because people cant stay still an old woman starts dancing knocks over a pale of milk then he runs away over the hills and far away to avoid getting beaten.

Does anyone else have the Oxford Encyclopedia of nursery rhymes? It is a great resource.

My Nana Aba (mother's father) used to sing to me its Urdu translation very often when I was little. I can never forget it! :p

Well, with 2 young 'uns I've had to remember my nursery rhymes so here's some which haven't been posted yet:

Sing a song of sixpence
a pocketful of rye
four and twenty blackbirds
baked in a pie
when the pie was opened
the birds began to sing,
now wasn't that a dainty dish
to set before the King.
The King was in his counting house
counting out his money
the Queen was in the parlour
eating bread and honey

hanging out the clothes

and pecked off her nose

Little bunny Fu-Fu hopping through the forest
Sweeping up the field mice and bopping them on the head!

Along came a fairy and she said...
"Little Bunny Fu-Fu you better stop or I'll turn you in to a stool"

Later that day...
Little Bunny Fu-Fu hopping throught he forest sweeping up he field mice and bopping them on the head.
The fairy came "I am only giving you one more chance if you do that again I'll turn you into a stool!"

Later that evening...

Little Bunny Fu-Fu hoppping through the forest sweeping up the field mice and bopping them on the head...

Little bunny Fu-Fu will never be seen sweeping up the field mice, because he is now the field mice's stool.
