The only movie I know of is the one with John Hurt as Winston and Richard Burton as O'Brien - the pair of them are so etched into my memory that I suspect it's now imprinted in my DNA! What perfect casting; in my mind's eye, that's precisely how I'd seen them, the epitome of a worn-out, old-before-his-time weed and the epitome of a powerful man at the peak of his intellectual powers. I mean, one of them played the Elephant Man and the other had been Mark Anthony - and Burton even wore exactly the right glasses in life!

That said, the film itself isn't a masterpiece. Like Animal Farm, it's an enormously difficult book to put onto film*, simply because of its depth. There has never been a great film based on nearly all classics of all literature. Maybe if Stanley Kubrick had given it a go, the story might have been told well on film, but I'd say that the above version is the best you'll ever get, because nobody will find two better leads. Julia was so anonymous I can't remember her at all.

*Famously managed as a cartoon. (Not that awful thing with the talking dog in it.)
