That time of year is here again and this year i've actually listened to the entries for the Eurovision song contest.
Well what can i say! There are some really good entries this year! (there are also some really bad ones too-Ukraine, UK. )
I really liked Greeces entry- Very Ricky Martin wanna shake your bum type of song.
I also really liked Poland and Russias entries.
And not to mention Belgiums funky 70s style song.
Armenias made me teary-eyed.:bawling:
As for my own country... I think we finally realised that we are better off not trying modern pop, rock, etc beats and went back to our roots. Our entry is very traditional.
Although i know we wont win, i suppose i have to support my country!:) (even though i believe it will be a toss between the other five mentioned)
what do the rest of the European Litnetters think? have you heard any of the entries? Who do you think is good and down right terrible?
Let me Know!:D

I think the eurovision song festival is a semi-bad idea with the worst execution imaginable, sure there sometimes are a few good songs, but the entire concept is flawed from start to finish. :)

The only good thing is about it all is listening to Terry wogans commentary.... however I did hear the english( British??) entry for the first time last night and it was as bad as I expected.

I agree with Aimus. It's an almost bad idea. But it is always so much fun.
So Niamh you liked Sarbel (our representative) or the song ?  .
He is so cute. Teenager girls here are mad about him. (Hehe if only i was younger :D ).
I like the song of Bulgaria. It's a bit more creative (compared to the others i have heard). And i don't like our song for sure (just the singer  I prefer the song when my tv is on mute mode).

:D I suppose you mean Stefan Raab. He's usually very busy being sued by all the people he insulted over the years :D.
Gee, where did you guys get to hear all the other countries' entries ? I thought they were to be kept secret until the day of the show in order to keep suspense at a maximum and prohibit the forming of opinions ahead of time that might influence the votes :D.

Every year there is a programme on Irish TV that shows all the entries.
I heard the greman one as well but i think i already forgot it. There is just one guy singing? No wait i think i remember it now....The video clip he did for the entry has him standing on a little stage with an old mic looking like Frank Sinatra. I think?

Mhm, no idea, I've never seen the video, but if I'm not completely mistaken, the song's sung by a woman (or a boy before puberty, who knows...)
"Even heaven criiiiiiiiies, everybody criiiiiiies ... "
But maybe that one isn't the actual German entry, I'm not 100% sure.

Join the club!:p I cant remember and i only heard it yesterday!
Whats the story with most eurovision entries all sounding the same with the same beat?
Or the songs just being rediculous! (like the ukraines- which i think people wanted banned because it has references to hitler or something....)

No wonder you're confused, having watched all the entries :).

Maybe they're all written and produced by the same person... It's a conspiracy !!! :D
(like the ukraines- which i think people wanted banned because it has references to hitler or something....)
Wow ! Shocking sells ...
But who votes for the songs, anyway ? I'd vote for the Irish entry just because it's from Ireland ;).

No wonder you're confused, having watched all the entries :).
That could do it alright! But i remember what most countries entries were!
.Denmark has a drag artists singing a song called Drama Queen,
.The UK have two girls, two guys singing a song about flying a flag and are dressed up as airhostesses and even sing the things hostesses say like cabin presure dropping place mask over your head etc.
Frances song is silly
Romanias is a really good idea. Seven guys singing the song in seven different languages
Swizerland... wait a min... i think thats the one withthe guy and germanys is a girls thats a tad bit blues.
Maybe they're all written and produced by the same person... It's a conspiracy !!! :D
;) maybe it is!

Hummm I must rember to buy popcorn before sunday so I can settle down to enjoying Wogan's comennts on the whole thing...I rember seeing some of it last year and they had this scrolling thing on the bottom for displaying the comments and texts of viewers half of them were things like Terry Rulez and You tell them wogan...
Yes the english one seem to be a bit of a rip off of the From paris to berlin thing that was out in the summer , my sister says that its less of a copy than the other uk entries. Maybe i is a conspiracy

What's Eurovision all about?
Like Turk said its a big song contest. It includes all the countries in the EU as well as many other European contries, Russia, Armania and usually Isreal. I dont know if they are in it this year or not.
Every participating country votes for their favourite and whoever gets the most votes wins.
Statisticly Ireland is the only contry to win it three times in a row, TWICE!
Also if you have ever heard of the Irish show Riverdance it originated as a mid show performance during one of the Eurovisions hosted in Ireland.

Is the Eurovision song contest not also to blame for inflicting ABBA on the world? (memory is not what it once was)

Yeah, they won it in '97 sang "love shine a light". The next year it was won by Dana International (for those unfamiliar with the contest, "she" was a transexual from Israel)
Niamh

Yeah i remember that! wasn't his/her song called Diva? there are two more drag artist/ transexual act this year. very popular entrants since Dana!

As time passes, we have grown less and less interested to the Eurovision song contest. About five years ago we were quite exited about it, but now we didn't even know about the place and Estonian performer until we had been reminded about them by someone. (Estonian song this year is based on the principle: take a song that did well on the last years, change it a bit, give it new words and voila! It probably won't make it to the next round, and if it did, we wouldn't probably care much)
There were some good songs on the whole Eurovision song contests too, we are quite certain, although it is quite hard at the moment to note any of them.
We just checked Romanian, Swiss and Ukranian songs on the net for they were mentioned here.
Romanian was quite amusing. Good idea, actually.
Ukranian made me wonder, whether in, say, 10 years, Eurovision wil be a show of total, absolute syrrealism, with perhaps some musical elements included. Could be.
Swiss actually seemed quite good - until the singing began. Then it was simply boring.

Watched the semi-final last night. And suprise, suprise... Neighbours are voting for each other again.
Apart from Bulgaria and Turkey, all the qualifying countries are ex-USSR republics. And Turkey has qualified owing to the Turkish population in Europe.
Let's see how it will go tomorrow night. Don't have any favorites yet. Maybe we can watch and post tomorrow night. Eurovision Live on LitNet! :D

Sounds like a good idea Scher!
That doesnt surprise me one bit! they always vote for each other. I think they should bring back the judging panels. The best might actually win for a change!

Ok, I saw a clip of that Ukranian woman(?) on the world service earlier. Leads me to this question: When did they start having semi-finals? I'm sure when I was back in the UK it all took place on the one night. Didnt it?

Because more and more countries are joining every year they cant have everyone in the contest so the ones who didnt to the best the year before hand usually have to fight to win a place in the actual contest. thats the semis.
Well so far have only heard the UK entry and, quel surprise, it's terrible. They've managed to show the world what would happen if you were to combine Steps (for those who don't know Steps they were a 'band' in the 90's - famous for not writing a single song, or singing probably, and ripping off Abba songs) and a Carry On movie. Not a pretty sight. I for one will be giving it a miss this year, sick of the embarrassment.

Ireland used to be the sure winner of this competition but recently has lost the secret touch, it seems like.
The UK entry was embarrassing, I am afraid.

Ireland has never seen last place before. I think we should just give up. We gave the UK neighbour votes cause the rest of europe do that and they didnt even do it for us. Could have gotten us out of single figures!
Still dont know how Ukraine came second!

Ukraine was awful. Can't understand how it made it to the second place
Serbia was okay, but I don't think it was the best. I liked Bulgaria and Georgia better.
Hanna Pakarinen didn't do as well as I wished, but I'm quite relieved it wasn't "Finland - 0 points" again. That would have been too embarrassing after Lordi's victory last year... :D
I think Finland made a good show, that's something we can be proud of. And it was nice to hear so many people who gave other countries' points to speak Finnish :)
