View Full Version : I'm Handicapped By You

I wrote this for all those persons who are in a wheelchair
or who are physically challenged. We take so much for granted
and don't realise that they face a day to day battle to be accepted in society without feeling like an outcast. We need to show more compassion to these people. I did not write this from personal experience.

* * *

You look firstly at my wheelchair
And then you look at me
'tho I know that you're not blind
You are still unable to see

There is not much difference
Between me and you
'tho some things may take time
There's still much that I can do

Please don't show me pity
I can look after myself
I'm not like a precious ornament
That sits upon a shelf

Please don't patronise me
And don't pretend to understand
I promise I'll let you know
If I need a helping hand

There's no need to speak so slowly
I can hear each word you say
Just treat me with respect
And you will truly make my day

Just accept me as I am
Don't treat me differently
If you were to step inside my shoes
In time I'm sure you'd see

* * *

"The most emotionally healthy people
in our society are able to put
themselves into other people's shoes,
know how someone else is feeling
and care about that.
This capacity extends beyond
sexual and family intimacy.
It creates a circle of genuine feeling
that can extend, eventually,
to all of humankind."

I like that quote at the end.
I think your poem is appropriate to the world. To almost all people in general. I think that some people do care but don't go far enough with compassion, for example I mean - you'll see a handicapped person and just smile, not a real heartfelt smile but a little grin, perhaps it could make someones day. But I think even saying hello or just going a little bit further than the smile is so kind.

Hi Kendall

I truly appreciate your comment and I couldn't agree more. I recently became a volunteer in my community and I visit an 84 year old lady who is very lonely. I realise more than ever that
we all have a lot to be grateful for and that we all need to
show more compassion and understanding towards others.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my words.

Take care..........Sue
