Good luck, Papaya! You know we will always be here, waiting for your posts! :)
And what better excuse to have a jug of frozen Margarita than house warming party! :D

I spent several hours at the Shreveport, Louisiana bus station once. It wasn't so bad. If you are looking for a place to hang out, you could do worse than the Shreveport bus station. They have vending machines.
Other than that, I know Louisiana has the highest murder rate of any state in the country. But this is due to the extraordinarily high murder rate of a few select areas: it's not as if the whole state is acting out the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Or so I've been told.
And the mosquitoes in Louisiana are so large, they have been known to carry off unattended babies.

I've never been there either but like everyone else, I've heard it's beautiful...and hot...and humid. When do you go?

Yeah Basil! I did some research of my own and not only does Louisiana have the highest murder rate we also have the highest rates of Gonorrhea and Syphylis. So Ha!

Yeah, I'm sslightly worried about my hair, I'm gonna look like a chia pet in that humidity. I'm leaving tomorrow, I've known for about 2 weeks but wasn't completely 100% sure until last monday.
I'm getting kinda worried, my favorite shoe store is around 100 miles away, and there isn't any Wild Oats or Trader Joes.:(

I offer my most sincere apologies to the murderous, diseased citizens of Louisiana; I didn't mean to sell them short. :p

I despise Kansas mainly because my mother takes annual meetings there on a yearly basis where I am reduced to living in an incommodious motel room with few rudimentary luxuries and accomodations. It's when you're out of your state for so long that you begin musing... 'Home.. sweet.. Home" :D

Where in Louisiana? I was in New Orleans for a week for a conference. Actually it was a couple of months before Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city. We assumed the city couldn't handle a bunch of geeky engineers. Actually I was shocked at the bawdiness of the city. You've probably seen video clips on the news of Mardi Gras. Well, we were there on a typical week, and while it was not quite Mardi Gras it was damn close. And they told us it was like that all the time. If you're going from Kansas to New Orleans, that's like going from church to a brothel.;) But great jazz and blues clubs!! I was out late listening to live music every night.

Well if they want to keep up the standards of syphilis they've set for themselves, they have to encourage these things

Unfortunately I'm not in New Orleans, I'm in Shreveport (quite near Basil's bus station). I was in New Orleans about a month after 9/11, boy what a fun little town. They said it was a little slow that weekend but it was still pretty "lively".

I guess any place would be bad when stuck in a hotel room. Where in Kansas? There actually is quite a lot to see but you have to look for it.

I think one could get themselves into a lot of trouble in that "fun little town." Cops didn't do anything even during a normal week. The lawlessness that occurred during the Katrina aftermath did not surprise me. Cops didn't seem very dedicated with clearly some things going on out in the open. But the music joints were great if you like live music.

That is not a legend...that is a fact...I also think they also have the ability to mummify people in a single feeding!
but other than moscitos, and rats, and cockroaches, its not to bad. Its a neat place to do research on odd religious ordes though. :thumbs_up
Good Luck on the move! :thumbs_up

I think I have a problem, I've been here a week. I watch the local news show before work each morning, so far I have heard three words mispronounced. I'm slightly dismayed by the lack of preparation and fact checking. These weren't obscure words, but things that have been in the news lately. Is this common in smaller markets? This is probably one of the reasons Louisiana is at the bottom in eductaion.:(

Don't remember, Papaya. The Cafe Du Monde sounds familiar. Was that more of a restaurant than music place?

It's spelled "beignet". I used to read Julie Smith's "Skip Langdon" mystery series, they are all set in New Orleans. Pretty good.
So, I hope you have air conditioning, papaya. I think it gets very, VERY humid in Louisiana. How do you like your new job?

Yes, it's already humid here. Just when I found the right combination of hair products to combat Kansas weather...Now I have to start all over again.
The job is ok, I'm still trying to figure out where and who and what and why.

The never ending battle of hair vs humidity. Whenever I start a new job, I find I have dreams that I am at work for the first week or two, until I get settled in.

I visited New Orleans the October before Hurricane Katrina. Loved it dearly. I also found that at night (and all weekend) New Orleans had the aura of lawlessness about it, but for the most part, the people were totally endearing. I enjoyed coffee and beignets at the Cafe Du Monde, they are definately what the legends go regarding their taste.
As well, there were these sudden parades that would just 'burst' out of nowhere.... and the beads, oh those blasted beads.... One would be walking down Bourbon street, minding their own business, looking for a catchy blues band, and people would be throwing beads down at you, or threatening to throw those beads.
I was standing on a street corner one hot noon time, when a parade of German "oooompa oooompa's" (complete with the leider hosen *spell*) blocked the street with their float. They were playing this fantastic oooompa pa music and hollering in broken English "is there anyone out there who is German". Well, my hubby is, so I put up my hand, and the next thing I knew, I was drowning in those beads from so many being tossed at me. It was crazy, and my hubby was skeptical as to how I got the beads when I got back to the place we were staying (he was on a work seminar going on and I had my afternoons to shop, etc.). If you have been to New Orleans, you will be familiar with this beads thing.
We went on a Haunted Ghost Tour of Nawlins (New Orleans 'locals style', lol), and that was very cool, the tourguide played up the infatuation of voodoo on this particular tour. I enjoyed it a lot.
Yes, it was truly an amazing place, the music never stops. We also had the priviledge of eating at this fantastic and yet reasonable restaurant named Bubba Gump's. The food was out of this world, I'd go back in a blink for any/all of the above, hee hee!
I hope that you enjoy your new home in Louisiana, Papayahed, the people are great. :)

OMG, that is toooooo funny!
You know, I savor this story because I know that my hubby is positive that by no means did I 'earn' the beads in the 'usual way', and yet.....
So, it is always going to be a bit of a chuckle between the two of us. But Virgil -- you really should see how many beads I picked off the pavement after they were tossed.... I had them hanging all over the little suite that my hubby and I were staying in, and his jaw literally dropped to the floor when his seminar was over..... hee hee.... can you imagine, lolol!
