Butterfly Birthday

There was a young poet who took a look at my lines,
And gave me a wonderful timeless note of review—
Isn’t funny how quickly passes the sands of time,
And now, Andave, I must write my rhyme for you.
What has always fascinated me about a butterfly,
Is that they manage to soar like an eagle, or drift on the wind.
Born as destructive little caterpillars who devour all, or try,
They become things of beauty by a simple change of skin.
Well, we humans are more like them than we care to admit—
As we find out as we grow from childhood to adult.
“Holy cow! Is that skinny freak me! What a humongous zit!
Oh Good Lord! What was I thinking? Was I totally nuts?”
Oh, yes. Your childhood pictures will brighten your old age:
But for now, little butterfly, have a Happy Birthday!
