View Full Version : Let's hear your voices :)

hey folks,
I've done a recording of me reading out the opening monologue from Richard III.
it's split up in two parts and in the second part i started some lines again, because the recording device played up.
the first part is dull, but in the second one I tried to sound EEEEEVIL :)
the mic was dead cheap, so my voice sounds weird :) (well, it sounds weird enough in real life)

http://service.gmx.net/mc/BBeIEcxepvJ0SeylT5TSgGjgaiqJJD

*edit*: I've added God's monologue from Everyman (by 'Anonymous').. not the best recording, but if i had to do another i'd go spare :)

click "GMX MediaCenter starten" to open the folder.

if you want to post your voice recordings for members to listen to, you can put them here :)

SleepyWitch

hehe, thanks kathy :)
i had to read those passages for a course and I thought "oops, what if the teachers asks us to read it out and everyone is caught unprepared and we end up reading out " erh prffrgrr, what?" ... so i practiced them a dozen times each and then i thought why not record them :)

Niamh

Or weird to me! I went with the everyman recording.

SleepyWitch
04-28-2007, 04:17 PM
so, when are you two going to post samples of your voice? :D

the Everyman thingy was strange to read... it's GOD speaking, but when you look at what he's got to say... well he sounds like "baaaah, nobody likes me, everyone's mean, moan moan moan whine whine"... i tried to imagine an old man with a long beard reaing it in a thunderous voice, but somehow I'm not sure that would work...

Niamh

I could record mine....but I have no clue how to upload it to that website. I am rather inept at following directions sometimes too...

Hmmmm, I think I might be able to figure something out...

SleepyWitch
04-28-2007, 04:23 PM
yeah.. i used the webspace of my German mailbox... you can give others access to your folders for 30 days... but i don't know any other web thingy where you can load up sound files.. maybe on one of those myspace thingies?

kathycf

Ok, I uploaded the file to my host, and it will need to be opened with any media player. w00t! :p

heeheee, nice recording kathy :) "hello hello..." :)
i tried to record some unscripted speech earlier on and all I could think of was "Hello, I'm SleepyWitch. Er, I don't know what to say. The weather is nice..er yah".. so I didn't post that one.

*edit*: i don't think your voice sounds very nasal.. mine sound nasal although i don't have any allergies or sinus conditions :) you're doing comparativley well :)

Thanks. I made a couple of ones, in particular a very stirring rendition of the time and date...:p

who knows, there could be a market for it :) I think in England whole generattions of people listened to the shipping news.. even people who didn't have anything to do with ships... they just liked to listen to them so much..
so why not times and dates.. would be nice for a change :)

(don't remember if it's called shipping news, but i think i read a story about it in the Times)

There's a site called Putfile which is used to upload audio file (it's used quite a lot at another forum I visit), but it seems to hate me so I had to use something else. I'll be back later, I'm going to un-dig my file LOL

Koa, you speak English quite well.

Here is me, blabbing about Massachusetts (http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/10/757791/massachusetts.wav), my home state.

Sleepy, your reading is awesome ! Did I notice a British influence :) ? I liked the Everyman excerpt best, you should join the Drama Club .

Koa, you've absolutely no reason to worry about your English ! There are a lot of Italian ERASMUS students here at my university, and some of them told me they never get a chance to speak English at their Italian university, which would account for their accent, but now that I've heard you speak, I don't believe you're from the same country ! Your English is very good !

Kathy, I love the Massachusetts promotion ! :) You have the same skilful intonation newsreaders have .

I'd love to record my own voice, but as Niamh, I don't have the equipment ...

Oh it's great to hear your voices!! Sleepy you read that great. Have you training in acting? I don't know if it was historically accurate but the dialect sounded just like a Renaissance English accent of Shakespeare's day. Must be the slight German of your personal speech makes it sound distant and older. You sound great.

Koa, you sound just like I imagined. In fact it sounds very much like one of my Italian cousins speaking English.

Kathy, that is not how I imagined your voice. It has no New England accent at all. You sound very much like a teacher, explaining to us Massechusetts. ;)

I wish I could put my voice on there, but I have no clue how. I would imagine I need a microphone.

i have training in watching Patrick Stewart, hahah :)
at the moment my english is quite muddled up... one of my brain cells tries to speak RP, the other the slight Coventry accent i picked up in England and the third tries hard to suppress its German accent...

actually, Shaky is said to have spoken with a broad Warwickshire accent (i.e. exactly the region I lived in for a year)

Kathy, I will listen to your description of Mass. tomorrow...

Koa, you do have an accent but it definitely doesn't sound like a typical Italian accent. :) I couldn't have told from your accent that you're Italian if I hadn't known that anyway.

Heh, heh, well I sound like most other native Mass people..lived here my whole life. I think for a real "New Englandey" accent you should listen to somebody from northern rural Maine. Even that is diminishing I imagine because people move around so much.

Yup, you will need a microphone. I got a microphone/headset combination from Staples office supply store for just about $13. :)

It's great to hear all your voices. Each of you has a really lovely speaking voice. I think we should start up a lit. net. radio broadcast--or maybe make up recordings of all the books we've got online heare. :) However, I had trouble hearing Sleepy's recordings for some reason. All I got is "Now is the winter of our discontent" from the first Richard III, and the others didn't come through at all. :(

Like Virg. I haven't the foggiest how to record myself for the computer. Kathy, the microphone part sounds fairly attainable and inexpensive, but how complicated is it to set up the computer to get things from the mic. to the forums? Do you need special software?

Niamh
04-29-2007, 03:01 PM
hey Kathy you've made me want to find out more about Mass-. It's great to hear your accent! I've always imagined you might have gotten a bit of an irish frim the ex but alas no!

Hmm, the only software I used is the soundrecorder program. It is standard with Windows usually. I am running windows xp, but I think other versions have it. Try start/programs/accessories/entertainment - that is where my soundrecorder program was hiding. :)

Once you have the mic hooked up, (and it just plugs into the computer), you run soundrecorder program and start recording your message. I love hearing people talk, so this could be lots of fun!! Petrach, you would need to find somebody to host the sound file, and then paste the link here. I use fileden (http://www.fileden.com/).

(btw, Niamh, the ex lived in London for the first 12 years of his life. His parents were from Donegal and returned there because London was a bit rough for them. He didn't really have a thick accent at all, not like other people in their town....nor like my ex father in law. I could never understand a word he said, his accent was very thick. I used to just nod and say "mmmhmm". :p )

Absolutely true, that Italians have bad English because of that. But I'm not the average Italian in that, because I had more opportunities to speak English. And I live in the Uk now and I think I improved a lot in these months I've spent here.

Of course I know how to say "cah" I have lived in Mass my whole life. I think you expect everybody here to sound like Steve Sweeney (http://www.dickdoherty.com/sweeney.htm). :p Does everybody in New York sound like Fran Drescher? Gosh, I hope not, that would be wicked hahsh. (very harsh). ;)

Glasgow? you are kidding me! There isnt even a glasgow twang in your accent!

kilted exile
04-30-2007, 01:16 PM
Nope, it's glasgow. The accent is a result of a english mother, a gran who would not have her grandson speaking like a damn ned, and speech therapy lessons because of convulsions as an infant which led to me not picking up letter sounds in the correct manner at an early age.

kathycf
04-30-2007, 01:29 PM
Nice voice, Kilted! I find accented speech quite nice to listen to. Well, I suppose that seems dumb because everybody has an accent of some kind, but to me as an American I enjoy listening to the speech of those from other countries.

It is interesting how variables other than location affect one's speech. My mother had a very typical Boston accent, I think the kind Virgil thought I would have. But I had many teachers in school who were not from New England, so I suppose I got into the habit of pronouncing "R" s on the ends of words.

I think in a homogenous, stable population you can expect folks to have the same regional accent, but once that population becomes diversified, accents change. I mean, my next door neighbor is from New York state, the college kids across the street are from Puerto Rico and the family around the corner is Vietnamese. They all speak English, but it certainly isn't "Yankee English".

Niamh, Virgil, Schoko, once you've got a headset (there are really cheap ones around; mine was 10 Euros) all you need to do is plug it in and then click the "start" button in your windows task bar. go to "programmes" and then there should be "accessories" or something there were you can find an audio recorder. it comes for free with windows. there's a red button. click this button to start your recording, click the stop button to stop recording. and save the file when you are done.

for some reason, the stupid thing stops recording after a while and you have to press the button again to continue... at least that's what mine does.

hurumpf, I'm not sure it's called "accessories" in the English version of windows.
maybe kathy nows? ;)

While at the office supply store today I happened upon a microphone and discovered that this recording thing is amazingly simple. Wasn't sure what to say, so I've given you a sample of the way I recently opened a survey course on Medieval and Renaissance literature. I recite the openings to Beowulf, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Spenser's Faerie Queene, and Shakespeare's Richard III. It not only amuses and bewilders one's students to start a class this way, but hearing the Old and Middle English quickly cures them of the impulse to complain about Shakespeare's language being too archaic to understand. ;)

Oh, Lynne50 and I will have to get together and do one; we live near to each other. I have several mics and I also have one on my MP3 player. I will have to figure out how to download my recording. I don't have the mics hooked up yet, but this sounds like fun. I only listened to a few and I enjoyed hearing your voices. Niamh talks quickly like I do; you also have a high voice and it sounds very nice. Nightshade is slower, deeper and you both sound so great to me. Thanks for the explanation in detail. I think I will try using that site. Currently. I don't have any mics hooked up to my newer computer and it's late anyway. I will try to do it by the weekend and you can all hear a truly squeaky (high) voice, which I attempt to slow down and deepen....I want to hear all of you on here, so I will review this thread later on. This is really fun!

Ha no Janine I was the squeaky one! niamh was the slower calmer one. Actually Niamh was in Dublin and I was in Manchester when we did that. We did it using VOIP ( voice over internet protocol) otherwise known as Skype and other internet telephoney things. Niamh's computer did the recording whihc is why when I am explaining Im not exactly sure what I am looking at because I cant see it.
But for the life of me I can't rember how or why it worked. I'll have to see if I can get it working again sometime this weekend.
:D

Wait a minute; who was the more prominent speaker there...also starting it off I believe? Now I thought that to be Nightshade. I will have to listen it later on when I have more time today. You both sounded great, not squeaky; one just spoke faster (I think that was more like me - I tend to do that out of nervousness). You were both very friendly too and sound like lots of fun. When I hear my own voice on audio, I hate it normally; then people tell me it's not as I percieve it to be. Once or twice Downing and I talked on Skype. She was in Romania and I in NJ, USA and it was quite clear. We were truly amazed; it was fun trying to understand each other, both with some type of accent. That was with my old computer and since then, I have not tried it again with my new one. I should connect everything again and try with one of you. Lynne and I could test it out perhaps first; I have an extra mic I could lend her but then you have to use your speakers; my other mic is combo with headphones. It's just a cheap set though but it may work with my new computer better than before.

Ok, I just listened to it again. Which one of you says " to stop the babble..." ? hahah....

nightie says a really quick hello at the beginning of that and then i babble for a bit and then she explains how to use vocaroo. :) she's the squeaky one and i'm the deeper voiced one... if in doubt, ask kilted. :)

Dunno if this works.
I recorded it last week to give it to my best friends and my sister. Tonight I noticed this thread, so thought I'd share. Click "Download this file", and let me know if the link works. :D

P.S. Both the voices in the audio are mine.

Sadly, the file is silent for me Symphony, don't know if the problem is on my side or yours.

I did a little reading, see if mine works, maybe this site would be better for you.

I messed it up half way through though haha.

Edit: Oh I got it to work (saved instead of opened from site)

Ha yes, it's 4 am, I should be getting up in 4 hours and I haven't even gotten to sleep.

I liked your reading with the singing of the poem in the background, the music was a bit loud though, makes your voice hard to hear at times.

Edit: Ha, I've got a bit of a Stewie Griffon thing going on in the beginning, and then I laugh like a child at Cummings' name.

Haha yeah I know. I wanted to make it better but apparently this was all I could do at that time with just the default sound recorder in my pc. Also, the song sounds so hazy. I just sang and recorded the song first, then played it and read the poem. The poem lost some of the simultaneity too, me being distracted by my own voice singing, haha... The breaks must've sounded awkward.

It's 4:14 AM here as well, but I'm just staying up cuz I have no classes tomorrow (reading week :D ).

OK now I'm going off to bed.

I made a recording of Auden's "The Unknown Citizen" since I was unsatisfied with my reading of the Cummings poem lol.

Hmmm, looking amongst my collection of recorded poems

My God Symphony, yours was great! You've shamed my pitiful poetry recitations.

EDIT: Wait omg, both voices are yours? You are a truly sublime singer! WoW!

OrphanPip, your voice is adorable ;)

Hahha French tongue twisters are hard.

I recorded the one you did plus another one after

http://www.zshare.net/download/72745017c4f498a5/

Si six scies scient six cyprès ci-près, six cents scies scient six cents cyprès ci-près.

If six saws saw six cypresses nearby, six hundred saws saw six hundred cypresses nearby (it kinda works in English too haha)

A little tip on your french, when you pronounce qu'on you want to pronounce the "qu" like a hard /k/ instead of like /kw/.

Edit: I like your voice too ;)

Edit2: Ever since the winky face blows kisses it seems extra flirty lol.

Damn it, you do it like a pro, hehehe. Let me see, all of these are from school so I have a whole library of *fails*

twister3.wma - 0.13MB (http://www.zshare.net/download/727454152e19d050/)

And this one I'm quite proud of merely because after a semester of not studying I had forgotten what it meant and thought it was part of a French poem I had written, but it turned out just to be some random assignment from the last semester
