View Full Version : Favorite passages of literature

Hello everyone. I wasn't sure whether to post this in literature or poetry since it pertains to both. I suppose the moderators shall move it as they see fit.
For a school assignment, I need to memorize either a poem or a passage of literature that has poetic merit (in the broadest sense). I have a few selections, like the final paragraphs of Crime and Punishment, a paragraph from the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, and "The Hollow Men," but I would like to know what others think. Ideally, this poem or passage would make at least some sense on its own and, since I must present it orally, be conducive to speech.
If possible, try to keep everything under 400 words. I'm not really sure how long I have to memorize the item. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Does it count? It's one of my favourite songs from Lord of the Rings. It's very poetic, and beautiful.
"The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinuviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her rainment glimmering.
There Beren came from mountains cold.
And lost he wandered under leaves,
And where the Elven-river rolled
He walked alone and sorrowing.
He peered between the hemlock-leaves
And saw in wonder flowers of gold

Poem by Dorothy L. Sayers from Gaudy Night.

Truth to tell, this poem goes over my head. I posted it on another forum and we had a short discussion over it. What I do understand, however, I thoroughly relate to. Not to mention, the poem itself is gorgeous. I love the way the words roll together and fit. Maybe I'll go post it in the Poetry section.

Yikes, I had almost forgotten how long Dickens's sentences are. Still, it is poetic...
The Luthien and Beren ballad is beautiful, Pensive. I think it might be a little long, but it's a gorgeous piece.

I'm a big fan of the beginning of Moby Dick:
Call me Ishmael. Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world.
