What is the part of the statistical analysis that is giving you problems?

**EDIT** This site http://www.robertniles.com/stats/ gives a pretty basic overview of stats. However if you have any specific questions I may be able to answer them for you.

I have written up the statistics but they are very discriptive. I need to analyse them which i am finiding difficult. Here is a section from my essay that im having trouble analysing.
The biggest increase for ‘Greater Manchester’ (Crime reduction table A2) was between 2002 and 2003, this had jumped from 78 in 2002 to 236 in 2003, but by 2005 this had jumped to 456, therefore ASBO's are not effective in reducing ASB. However ‘West Yorkshire’ (Crime reduction table A2) issued 696 ASBO's between April 1999 and December 2005 but dropped from 305 n 2004 to 260 in 2005. Therefore something must be effective in reducing ASB. When looking at a more detailed table of all the ASBO's issued and refused it shows that most of the ASBO's that have been issued in Greater Manchester is ‘Manchester CC’(Crime reduction table C) with 458 ASBO's issued in total and 4 ASBO's refused between April 1999 and December 2005. Whereas the most ASBO's that have been issued in West Yorkshire is ‘Leeds CC’ (Crime reduction table C) with 327 ASBO's issued in total and 2 ASBO's refused between April 1999 and December 2005. However west Yorkshire has a much smaller population rate then Greater Manchester. West Yorkshires population rate in 2003 was ‘2,079,217’ (Yorkshire Forward) whereas Greater Manchester’s population rate in 2003 was ’24, 82,328’ (Census 2001). This therefore effects the amount of ASBO's that can be issued within these areas. The best comparison for ASBO's effectiveness would be Greater London due to its population rate of ’71, 720, 91’ (Census 2001) and 1172 ASBO's issued from April 1999 to December 2005, unfortunately this does not decrease over the years as in 2004 441 ASBO's were issued, but by 2005 this had jumped up to 528 ASBO's issued.

Ok no prob I think I can help a bit, the first thing to consider is that with statistics a graph or chart is always a lot better than words, Excell can provide great graphs for these things which will make your report a lot easier to read.

The biggest increase for ‘Greater Manchester’ (Crime reduction table A2) was between 2002 and 2003, this had jumped from 78 in 2002 to 236 in 2003, but by 2005 this had jumped to 456, therefore ASBO's are not effective in reducing ASB.

You can create a normal bar chart here to show the increase then in your written description, make more of an emphasis on the % rate of increase. The fact that it is 78 as opposed to 77 or 79 is unimportant (and at any rate can be seen in the chart) what does matter is the rate at which it is increasing year on year.

However ‘West Yorkshire’ (Crime reduction table A2) issued 696 ASBO's between April 1999 and December 2005 but dropped from 305 n 2004 to 260 in 2005. Therefore something must be effective in reducing ASB.

The main issue I would have with this part is that you do not seem to be showing any real significance for the 1999-2003 data, what is the trend here is it always increasing? if it is of an up/down nature is 305 to 260 of a similar percentage change (here 14.75%) between years?(i.e. is it statistically significant)

Here it would help to show % of ASBO's by area to support your claim (a pie chart is effective for this)

Whereas the most ASBO's that have been issued in West Yorkshire is ‘Leeds CC’ (Crime reduction table C) with 327 ASBO's issued in total and 2 ASBO's refused between April 1999 and December 2005.

See above

However west Yorkshire has a much smaller population rate then Greater Manchester. West Yorkshires population rate in 2003 was ‘2,079,217’ (Yorkshire Forward) whereas Greater Manchester’s population rate in 2003 was ’24, 82,328’ (Census 2001).

Again you can show the exact figures in a table if you like (& you probably should) but what is actually interesting would be a ratio of ASBO: population (say for every 1000 people ~ # ASBO's

Again a ratio of ASBO: population and as before an examination of whether the jump is statistically significant
