Chant

My secrets discovered,
Unveiled before you all—
Sorrow probed and uncovered—
Thus ends the masquerade ball…
Said I not the whole time,
That this poet was stark raving mad?
You always read the rhymes—
Failed to notice that I was dead…
It is a cruel thing they call “shunning”,
Walk among the living a corpse.
No matter how strong, lovely, or cunning—
Cries fall on deafened ears—go ignored.
I created my masks with craftsmanship,
Blade the mystery writer, Arrow the Ghost—
Pen the skillful poet of lovely penmanship—
Raven, Colt, many more; entire hosts…
For my people, The Cherokee, Raven was…special,
He came around when the brave came to mourn
And plucked from his own breast a gift blood be-speckled:
And the black feather slowly drifted to the forest floor…

Adieu

The Earth and the Stars go on forever…
You will never forget Pendragon
In the soft of the night
That part of me will still be here
As I have left parts of myself elsewhere, elsewhen
I cannot see the road ahead,
But my feet must follow it,
For the rest of the saying is
“…but today is a good day to die.”
Yet it is not my time,
For I am not called…

I'm glad you have not
been called away to depart
from us, Pendragon.

Your words would be sorely missed.

Cheers!

Sincerely,

Uncle Lar

A beautiful poem. I like it very much (although i am not a poetry reader so i guess my opinion doesn't count that much).

Pendragon, that was very wonderfully vivid and haunting. I don't know much about critiquing poetry but that was just amazing.

Gosh Pen, I don't think I'm fit to review something this interesting. Your words evoke sentimental tones and thought :)

I will not lie to my dear friends. This was a good-bye poem, originally. But I couldn't go through with the walking away from the forum. As I say in the last little part, which really isn't part of the main poem, my people in times of deep trouble, when there was no way out had that saying: "The Earth and the stars go on forever, but today is a good day to die..." Many Native American tribes had the saying, and African tribes as well. But it is not my time to go, I am not called, and until He is through with me and bids me rest, I must walk my path in darkness and daylight, in sunshine and gloom, in health and in pain. I have been here over two years now, and have almost reached 10,000 posts. My poetry hangs on walls around the world, and I must write at least four or five new ones every day. Someone once said that a sailor rides the storm without loosing his love for the sea. I remain forever yours--

Thank goodness you're staying. That was my first worry. I would really miss you, my dear Pen.

As to the poem, excellent!! There are many wonderful lines. Here are my favorite:

It is a cruel thing they call “shunning”,
Walk among the living a corpse.
No matter how strong, lovely, or cunning—
Cries fall on deafened ears—go ignored.
Please don't contemplate leaving. Some many of us would miss you.

That's a beautiful line as well Virgil, and I coudn't imagine Pen leaving even if he was serious about it.

 'course I'm serious!

It's now 10:08 P.M. where I live and I read the poem at maybe 9 this morning. It's been in my mind on and off, it's such a lovely poem. Thank you for sharing.

Pen - you are a phenomenal poet and a person most everyone in this forum has a great respect and admiration for. I'm new here but you've always inspired and encouraged me with your comments and suggestions. I really enjoyed your poem and especially felt these lines.

In the soft of the night
That part of me will still be here
As I have left parts of myself elsewhere, elsewhen

Like wow, I've always wanted to say that.
