Hi everybody - this site looks really good - I am an English Literature Tutor/Lulu author/Mentor from the UK - looking forward to hearing what you all have to say about my hero David Herbert !! (I think I was in love with his mind when I was about 17 !) Already I see a post on here relating to an article I wrote for helium on Avoiding Sentimentality in Poetry in relation to Lawrences The Piano. I also have a writers mentoring website on MySpace and am happy to share my self-publishing successes/experiences/tips with any of you who might be interested. PS Lawrence lived near our part of the South West of England during the war !! Back later ......

Yes, welcome, inspirangel, to Lit Net and all the threads! I am particial of course to the Lawrence short story thread. I have been quite obsessed for years now with David Herbert, aka Bert, aka Lorenzo, aka Lawrence, aka DHL. Did the man have enough nicknames? I know I fell deeply in love with his mind in my 20's - I was a late bloomer! At anyrate, I have not gotten back to your blog yet but it is on my agenda soon to be viewed. I know that poem now - "The Piano" - isn't that the one about the little boy hidding below the piano as his mother played...the child being Lawrence? It is a sweet poem and so poignant. I am anxious to hear what you say about it now.
When you say the time L lived in South West of England, wasn't that the time he and Frieda were in Cornwall and they were interegrated - their house searched? That was the final straw that sent him off to other lands and exiled himself from England. I may be wrong about Cornwall being the place since I don't know the areas as well as you. Right after that I believe he left England and traveled to Australia. I will check my biography books.
Anyway, interesting that you live near where L lived. I would love to see all the place he was in England and abroad.

Thanks, Janine - yes, it was Cornwall, one of the wildest most exposed parts! What would he have written I wonder if he had syayed?? Now we ll never know! I didnt know about the house being searched though! Thanks for Prussian Officer link. Dying to hear what you think of my "Piano" reflections - yes it was the little boy under the Piano - still makes me sad when I read it.

inpirangel,
Yes, I read in one of the biops if he had stayed in England he would have settled there. He really loved it in Cornwall. Cornwall is not far from Land's End, is it, or am I wrong? I need to get my maps out. I have a keen desire to come someday to England and especially to those areas.
I have a British film made from the little known or rarely read novel of Lawrence's "Kangaroo" which he wrote during his brief stay in Australia; in the opening scene he and Frieda, actually the characters in the novel, but definitely L and Frieda stand-in's, hear a knock at the door late at night (Cornwall). Then officers charge in rudely and search their little cottage. Lawrence has been writing an old Welsh song in his own invented system of code. They see that and immediately seize his notebook. It's all quite ludicrious now, but at that time this really did happen. Of course, since Lawrence married a German wife during the start of WWII, they actually were thought to be spies undercover, and since they were near the coastline...perhaps they could be signaling ships....oh come on. But officials really thought that way back in the day. You see her cousin was a famous German fighter pilot - you have heard of the Red Baron, no doubt. Well, that was her cousin. But during the time they lived in Cornwall, it was quite pleasant for Lawrence. It was this incident among others that prompted him to leave England for good. Sad, isn't it? He then felt very rejected by his own country, all his life really.
Oddly enough, I live in New Jersey, USA. and I read that he lived there for a very short time, when he was dealing with publishers in New York City. I thought - "wow, Lawrence has been everywhere; who would think NJ?"
His favorite home was in New Mexico, where he and Frieda had a ranch. Now this could lead to a very long story, all of which is quite interesting. You do know that Lawrence was a wanderer all his life, or at least most of it?
I think I did address your Piano comments already in another post, but after I read it over another time, I may comment further. I really did like very much what I read today. Thanks for sharing that. Your blog site is quite interesting. I will explore it closer another day when I am not so busy.

Yes Janine - it is sad that L felt rejected by his country and left Cornwall - I would love to have have read anything he wrote about that area - I realise he was a nomad, thts why I love his early stuff as I love the landscapes and wildlife of the "Western Isles" - thanks for the blog encouragement, feel free to subscrbe or apply for an "addy" - I had a quick look at your profile and was amazed to discover you are an artist ? I dont suppose you ever work with www.lulu.com ? That would be too much of a coincidence! (I am a lulu author and sometimes have dealings with the graphic artists there!)

inspirangel, Yes, I too love reading about Lawrence's early life in England. For one thing the man knew plants and flowers, he had studied botany and adored it. He knew all the names of the flowers in the fields. He often writes such lovely passages about flowers and plants and wildlife. This is what first drew me to his writing I believe. His poetry is full of such images. His early writing did have more emphasis on nature and pastoral aspects, later his concentration was more on people and characterisations and impressions of place and interactions between people. Lawrence was a great observer.
What is an "addy" exactly in your blog site? I looked up the other site from your link; I have never been involved with it. I think my friend told me about it once, or something like it. She is more actively involved in graphic art. I used to be. Thanks for reading my profile page. I do pencil drawings/on painted backgrounds and ink drawings. My signature picture is a card I designed and had printed; an ink drawing of fine dots. You can see a full size version of it in Photoalbum thread Pg.120 or 121. My own photo is on page 115. I hope to make a blog on here soon, and post some more drawings, etc.

Hi - an "addy" is short for "add to friends" on a my space. When you view someones profile, if you are interested in their interests, hobbies, trials and tribulations/local environment happenings, making a go of their career and so on, you can subscribe to their "blog" (daily/weekly web log) automatically so it gets sent direct to your space every time they add to it. My own favourite blogs are those of writers, creatives, naturalists, literature journals etc. You just click on either "Add to friends" or "subscribe to blog" at top of page, where it says "latest blog" (Mine are mostly to do with Landscape/Wildlife/Writing !!)

inspirangel, thanks for the explanation of addy and the rest about the site. I will have to check it out fully when I have the time. Lit Net keeps me quite tied up as it is. But blogs do interest me. We also have blogs on here and they are quite nice. Soon I want to make one up myself and post some writings and some artwork - drawings.
