I am trying to find the source of a surreal story which I read back in the 60's.
It's about a young man ( a simple name like Smith or Jones) from the South (USA) who was brought up in a vegetarian household and had never eaten meat. He traveled to the North (Chicago) one year and discovered meat in a cafeteria. He loved this new food and had to find out where it came from. The cafeteria attendant told him to go to the stock yard. He ended up at the back door to the stock yard and persuaded someone to let him in to see how the animals were processed. He was watching the line of cattle on hooks proceed down a long line into another area. He leaned into the line to see where they were going and an empty hook came by and plunged into the young man's neck and killed him. The end.
I thought that the story was one of the stories that Andre Breton had collected, but I can't find it. I did check his Anthology of Black Humor, but it wasn't there. I would really appreciate any help I can get in trying to find this story.
