View Full Version : question for muslims- about breweries

Some friends and me run a group for international students and we organized a guided tour of a local brewery (beer).
the guided tour was yesterday and a new Egyptian girl showed up at the meeting point. It only dawned on her we were visiting a brewery when we arrived there and she excused herself and suddenly dashed off, because she wasn't allowed to visit it.
she could have stayed outside and waited for us because we had a drink afterwards (there were non-alcoholic drink and veggie food, so she could have had some), but she just vanished.
--> my question: is it forbidden for all muslims to visit breweries? (We didn't even see any beer during the guided tour) or is she particularly radical?
she was a nice girl and we'd like her to take part in our upcoming activities...
but our next trip will be a hike up a local hill and we might go to a beergarden for lunch afterwards. will she dash off again because they happen to sell beer?

Sleepy, I believe Muslims are forbidded to drink alcohol. I'll leave it to Muslims here to expound or correct me.

Well, perhaps people would think they were drinking if they were seen inside.

Well, did you try asking the girl? While her actions may have something to do with her religion, it strikes me that she could provide a better answer to your question. I think if you approached her in a friendly way and asked why she ran off, she might explain herself.

The simple and complicated answer is that its difficult to say as it goes for personal feeling and interpritation. Youd have to ask the girl to explain for herself.

Sleepy, I think you may be right that she could not visit a place that sells/makes an alcoholic beverage. The reason I believe you may be right, is that I recently heard that muslim cab drivers were causing a hullabaloo in New York City (I think) because they refused to take drunken fares (passengers) to home or wherever they wanted to go because drinking was against their (the cab drivers') faith. Just the fact that the passenger was drunk and was in their cab was against their faith. So, actually being in a place that makes alcohol is probably a big no-no.

Not so sure... There are breweries and wine makers owned by Muslims in Muslim countries as well...
Probably it is a personal thing for that girl... If you ever talk to her, do let us know please, SW! :)

Muslim cab driver issue was not New York City, but Minneapolis, Minnesota.

thanks folks :)
kathy, nope we couldn't talk to her because she just said she had to leave and off she ran... we've got her e-mail address, but it would be stupid to ask her by e-mail...
thanks :)

Drinking alcohol is forbidden for Muslims. But these days pubs etc. have become a social hangout where u can go as a place to unwind and of course you dont need to drink alcohol. However there are some Muslims who adopt a strict attitude when it comes to alcohol, believing it is better to keep a barrier and distance.
lke nightshade mentioned, its personal feeling. she shouldn't have just run off though. i think maybe she panicked? Perhaps it was first time and all that and she was confused. Maybe next time she wont run or she will explain herself and shes had time to think about this issue and decide where she stands.
