I have just joined your forum, though I have been reading your posts for the last couple of days, I am not a student or anyone reading a thesis and I am not very educated. I dont know half the writers you have mentioned, but I do have a love of literature and words and this seems a nice friendly place to learn, share and discuss.

Hi Miranda,

I have high school education, with a few part time courses here and there, and I didn't start reading until I was thirty. I too, love literature. There is a wealth of information in books. The only way to get to know authors is to get reading.

Cheers,
Lara

*waves* Hi there, babe. Don't feel intimidated. I'm new too, and I'm not a lit. student either -- just like to read, like ideas, have a lot of time to myself. But even so... music lovers who can't read a note can still discuss on a board along with musicians, right? Anyone who tries to make literature seem like an exclusive club for academics is just plain pretentious, (and has missed the whole point of why most writers write, in my opinion).

I like it here so far, so... I look forward to getting to know ya! :D

so sung shakespeare.
am also quite new here and am just trying to get to know the folks of this land - a place where i've sensed presence of ppl who love books as much (or more) as me :)
hope you get to have a wonderful time.

Welcome Miranda! The greatest thing about literature is that no matter how much you've read, or what "level" (so-to-speak) you're on, there's always something new to learn!

Thankyou for the great welcome..I feel at home already! My favourite writers are the Bronte's and my favourite book is probably Wuthering Heights. I love short stories especially those of tchekov...but dont talk to me about his plays because the only ones I have read, I found boring. The last books I read were by Dave Pelzer, the first of which is called 'A Child Called It'. Before this I read 'The Throwback' by Tom Sharpe which I thought very funny. I am at a bit of a loss at the moment because we have been decorating and all my books are put away until I get my shelves back up again.

I like poetry but am not really stuck on particular poets but prefer individual poems. I have read Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained and though I found it a little hard, I loved it and the rich imagery it has, bringing the story from Genesis to life. I like simple poems too - one of my favourites is the Lady of Shallot. I like things that tell a story.

I guess I have chatted enough about myself now!! Thank you again for the great welcome..I think I will like it here.

Love from Miranda

Yay, welcome to the new person....
I, myself, am new (although i talk alot, so it may not seem that way). actually i wonder how long we need to be here before we are not new anymore? hmm......

*gets distracted pondering new question, slaps own face for focus*

anyhow welcome, and dont let the intellect of these folks intimidate you; perhaps go and read some of the posts regarding embarassing moments and bad relationships. that helped me see 'em all as more real and human.

hope to see you on here more; im sure you will enjoy it.
although beware: it does become addicting!!!! just ask around, i know im right.....

Very addicting, considering I have even more trouble focusing with this thing sitting right there on the desk, just waiting to be accessed. Get into it.
