I am the greatest member. I was also Queen Nefertiti in a former life.
Sorry, I am just pulling your leg. :p In all seriousness, if you are interested in forum staff including the nice person who provides us all with our daily dose of LitNet, you can find that info here (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19944).
Otherwise, we have already had a couple of threads regarding cool members/member of the year type stuff, and the moderators quite recently introduced a "member of the week" thread, and all of them are right here in general chat.
Welcome to LitNet by the way. :)

I think all members contribute to the lovelyness that is LitNet. Everyone here is so diverse and spirited, the forums enjoyability sprouts from the colorful range of literary topics and texts combined with the amazing, different members whose opinions and thoughts never fail to entertain and engage. But that is the beauty of literature as well, you can't pick a single book to be seen as superior to all others. A book is beautiful because between the front and back is an entirely unique world to indulge in and learn from, whether you enjoy it or not.
So my answer is...I could never choose! But all the work and effort put in by admin and the mods is always very much appreciated and they can not be thanked enough for holding our little community together.

I don't think we are the greatest as we are quite short, only about 175 cm. Haven't really made a poll about people's heights so we are afaid we can't tellwho is the greatest.
(you could also consider the greatest person in body mass)

But as we have heard Scher occasionally causes eclipses and affects the trajectories of small planets, she could be the greatest. Might be witchcraft as well, though...

So we, the members are the greatest, while KAthycf is not. Judging by the quote of Jesus.
But the true answer is comparison, why compare in the first place? The fact is when you say he is smart implies the other is dumb.

Huh? I don't think the quote was about "smart".
I tend to think comparing people to determine "who is the greatest" is a load of codswallop, myself. I understand the original question was posed to find out more about the site, and as such I am not criticizing that. I said I was the greatest as a joke because I really don't like rating people.

A great lump like myself? I understand centimeters and kilos all right, and even British stone weight, but all of them mean I weigh too darn much! http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l108/AbsalomKane/read.gif I stand 6 feet tall even in my bare feet and having lost some weight now weigh 338 pounds. I find the whole idea of one member being held in higher esteem than another to be ridiculious at best and a bad idea at worst. We are equals here, and everyone should be able to feel that way. I have no desire for any compliments unless my friends freely give them, (and they do!) so I don't need an elected vote to tell me how great people think I am. They will let me know. And if they think I am a bum or worse, they'll let me know that as well! http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l108/AbsalomKane/Thanks.gif

They are called English units. The English at one time used them, invented them actually, but apparently became ashamed of them. ;) Or is it that they just want to join the crowd? :p :p As someone who works with both in engineering, I find English units so much more elegant.

I find English units so much more elegant.
elegant? as in "enjoyable to see non-English ppl/ non-engineers split their head over weird numbers that don't convert directly into each other"
.. er, what do English people do when something is actually smaller than an inch? i mean, there are lots of things that are smaller than 2.5something centimetres, but there's no smaller unit like millimetres?
what if someone is neither 5'5'' nor 5'6'' tall but something in between? i mean it's a diff of 2.54 centimetres, that's quite a lot!
1 inch=1 inch
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet= 1 yard
1760yards= 1 mile aaaaaaargh
hehe, funnily enough we use inches over here for the size of bicycle wheels (only they are called "Zoll" with a ts, not z, in German) and some pipes (as in plumbing, not smoking)

I am five foot and one and a half inches tall. Or more exactly, five foot and one and 3/4 inches tall. The inch can be divided up into smaller units that way 1/4 , 1/3 and so on. I won't argue and say it is as precise a measurement as centimetres, but it can be fairly accurate nonetheless, as an engineer such as Virgil might be able to confirm. The metric system can be more accurate in many ways, and is used exclusively when dispensing medication here in the US. I am looking at a pill bottle right now, with a dosage of 1 mg.
(btw, I am height challenged as well, although that in no way negates any "greatness" on my part. ) :p

The whole clothes buying thing is a pain. Here in the States a size is considered petite (length wise) if the intended wearer is 5'4" or shorter...and typically slimmer than the average person.
I am not quite 5'2" so even the so called "petite lengths" are invariably too long. I don't sew, and sometimes you just can't hem something anyway because it ruins the line of the leg...for example a flared leg.
Then you have plus sizes for larger people. This is typically for a size 12 or 14 and larger. BTW, I noticed when I was in England and Ireland that sizes over there are different. A size 12 in England is about the equivalent of a size 6 here. At least that is how is was ten years ago which is when I was last over there.
The silly part is that a size 12 person probably weighs about 140 pounds and maybe about 5'4" in height...hardly what I would consider to be "plus size" It seems about average.
Then you get into the "plus size petite", which seems oxymoronic but isn't...since many heavier people are also short. I am on the heavier side of "average" and also pretty darn short. So I try to find "plus size-petites" and it is no picnic. (and Night was correct...it is "vertically challenged".)
ok, thanks :) i didn't know about 1/4 inch etc
Your welcome. I believe the smallest measurement you can get is 1/64 of an inch, so you have to be pretty good with fractions.

my best friend has the exact same problem.
well, if it's any help, I'm more or less average size and weight but I can hardly find any clothes I like.. it's mainly because I'm very picky and don't like a) girls clothes' and b) fashions... so I usually end up with trousers that are way too long because i want guys' cargo trousers and most stores don't do "S" guys' trousers...
IF i try on girl trousers, the once that are big enough to accomodate my rear end are about a yard too long
plus, my shoulders are a bit on the broad side.. got stuck in a dress once when i was trying it on.. putting it on was not a problem, but finding my way out of it again...

I don't know, my American friend is not very tall, and I saw her going to the 'petite' section which surprised me because I thought that 'petite' meant well...short AND thin, hence calling it 'small'. Not that my friend is fat, but she's like me which is not exactly thin. She does confirm that American sizes are different, but well aren't they everywhere... European sizes are different, and Italian are different as well...:crash:
kathycf
04-19-2007, 08:25 PM
I think "petite" was used almost exclusively for short and thin.
Things have started changing though (at least here in the US) because clothing manufacturers are slowly starting to realize that heavier women who happen to be short would, in fact, like to wear semi-fashionable clothing. Thus, now you get "plus size petites". So in the US at least, the term is getting widened (no pun intended) to mean simply "short". :)
*edit* I did a google search for plus size petite and here (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=plus+size+petite&btnG=Google+Search) is what I got....quite a lot actually.

There is only one store in town where I can buy shirts that actually fit. I take a 3XL in a extra long length (so it will tuck), my trunk being the longest park of my body. Many stores carry 3XL, but not the extra length I need. A lot of pants do not go up to my waist size (48 on easy-fit). Now that I am finally loosing weight, maybe that will change. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l108/AbsalomKane/HolyMoly.gif

hehe, my boy friend takes extra long lenght, too, but he's skinny.. it's such a hassle to find nice pullovers or shirts for him because the ones that are long enough will flap around his sides like a flag and look really silly.

Boy can I relate to most of the posts on this page. I do sew when I manage to get my sewing machine out and set up. If it is not out all the time - forget it. I have about 10 pair of jeans/pants to hem presently....all new ones I bought miles too long - I am 5 foot tall. What a total pain it is buying slacks in the USA, so mostly I love summer with capris, shorts and skirts. I must get the machine out soon to hem the new pants for next winter, ugh! I really hate the hemming job, but to get them hemmed at a cleaners/taylors is about 8-10 dollars each now - way too expensive when I can do it myself. A person my size can buy in petites and I am not thin anymore - inbetween now. But even in that department I often have to take them up a few inches. The regular department - they are about 5 inches or more too long - ridiculous! How tall do they think women are anyway?
Nightshade
