I really love this site, but there are a couple of things that really, really bug me.

1) The assignment of each author to his/her own sub-forum. This just makes it ridiculously hard to browse, IMHO. As a casual user I certainly wouldn't want to go through the sub-forum of every single author I'm interested in. It also makes it hard for people to get homework help if they are enquiring specifically about, say, John Donne. How many times do the regular user browse the Donne sub-forum a day?

2) The division of Shakespeare down to its sub-sub-forums based on each play. I totally agree that Shakespeare should have his own sub-forum just because of the sheer volume and influence of his writing. However, the same problem as above comes up. It's very tiresome to sift through all 36 sub-sub-forums when you are looking for a good discussion on Shakespeare.

That's just my $0.02. If these questions have already been addressed previously, my apologies:p

Well, it would be equally difficult to sift through *pages* of posts in "General Literature" if all the authors (over 250) on the site with etexts were lumped into it :)

One thing you can do is "Subscribe" to the (for example) John Donne forum:
http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=130

Click on "Forum Tools" pull down menu in upper right corner of screen
Select "Subscribe to This Forum"
Select which option you would like for notification.

That solves two things: you get notice of new topics posted and when you do log on to the site you can go into your User Control Panel (upper left corner of screen), click on "List Subscriptions" (left-side menu) and that shows you all the forums you're keeping track of.

The same procedure goes for any specific topic you want to subscribe to.

Click "Thread Tools" etc. :)

You can also check activity since your last log on by clicking the "New Posts" link on the screen's top menu, which should give all and any new topics and posts since your last log on. (But that could also be *pages* of stuff if you haven't logged on for a few days, there can be almost a dozen pages of posts here a day.)

Hope that helps a little.

Wow, I didn't know there was such an option. Thanks!

The specific author/book forums are for integration with the main site.

for instance here

http://www.online-literature.com/shakespeare/

You'll notice the most recent threads on Shakespeare listed towards the bottom.

Without the forum divisions that would be impossible.
