I like many words, as vague as that sounds. A few that come to mind: ambidexterous, daunt, omnipotent, lagubrious, reverence.
Also, being a science geek, I love many anatomical and physiological terms, such as: zona fasciculata, juxtaglomerular apparatus, corpora quadrigemina, arbor vitae, prima fasciae latae, acetabulum, corona radiata, infundibulum, auricle, jejunum, fovea centralis, fovea capitis.
Sorry, I got carried away.

I love all the onomatopoetic words because of their ability to say just what they want to say. Other than those:
allure
willynilly
caterpillar
lullaby
gentle
aura *steals Bong's word* :p

What do you all like about a word? What makes it your favorite word? Its sound? Its meaning? Or something else?
For me it, it is usually the word's ability to express its meaning through its sound... Like the word 'allure'... When I say it to myself, I can sort of feel its meaning. I know, I know... It is aaaaallll in my head!

I usually like all of the above: it's sound and meaning. Most of those Latin and Greek terms of anatomy and physiology I posted have other meanings that I find interesting: arbor vitae means 'tree of life,' corona radiata means 'radiating crown,' etc. Meaning-wise, I love many of those words that can summarize a large meaning in one, long or short, word, like 'promenade.'

Perspicacious---*Per-spi-kay-shuss*...(having keen judgement, or being discerning)
Anthropogenic...(caused by man....as in pollution)

These are two of my faves!! i think I like a word with multiple syllables smoothly flowing to completion. My writing tends to complicted compound sentences, and while I infrequently use so called 'big' words in my writing, I do so love the sound of them once I figure out what the **** they mean!!....happy happy.....la de da.........never enough words, never enough words..........

I also like:

First, my apologies; I misspelled it. Sorry if I confused you.

From Webster's:

Main Entry: ta·ma·le
Pronunciation: t&-'mä-lE
Function: noun
Etymology: Mexican Spanish tamales, plural of tamal tamale, from Nahuatl tamalli steamed cornmeal dough
: cornmeal dough rolled with ground meat or beans seasoned usually with chili, wrapped usually in corn husks, and steamed

Also slang I think, such as in "hot tamale" -- a good looking lady.

Hello All,

What is favourite word and why?

Mine is Serendipitous :-)

Serendipitous -lucky in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries

I believe that Life, humanity and sciences are full of such moments :-)

I've got a chapter in my current book called Serendepity which means practically the same thing, but that arbitrary fortune comes your way in an unintentional fashion.

My favorite words have to be parmacetti--a leviathan or a whale (as written in Melville's Moby Dick, redolent; floral....fragrant and flowery just like my sweet state residence of Florida! :D, impetuous, fastidious and petulant which means jumpy, fussy about appearance and generally fussy which are all idyllic terms to express my pampered pooch's disposition! I also admire the words lackadaisical(sp?), wag (which means a silly person; not like wagging a finger..) and belligerent

Also sacrosanct, sanctamonious, circumlocutious, belligerent, decadent, ostentacious, [b]opulent and scrupulous
meaning...:
holy, to make holy, pretentiously wordy and incoherent, angry for vindictive causes, a person who spends lavishly, bright and flashy, also bright and flashy, and particular about iota details...

I also love the words belated, belittled, bard, bereft, vindictive, vendetta, redress, presentiment, predicament and vicissitudes(spelling?)---meaning: coming late or procrastinating, to dismiss, an epic poet writer or general poet, deprived of something, vengence, vengence, vengence, premonition;forbodement, troubles and troubles...

all of these are pervasively seen in hardcore classic literature such as War and Peace and The Count of Monte Cristo.. Unfortunately I can rarely use them in contemporary literature because it convoludes and obfuscates my passages "meaning" in contemporaneous (:p), or contemporary terms...

Are there any litnetters who are word lovers? What's your favorite word? Top ten? Also, have you encountered any wierd words that you just HAD to look up when you were reading?

Or am I just a word-nerd? :D

Last night, while reading Tolstoy's Hadji Murad, I encountered a rather abstract word: "nosegay". Without looking at the definition, can you guess what this means? It is evident that I am no connoisseur of flowers. According to Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Langauge, 2nd College Ed., it means, "a bunch of flowers; small bouquet, esp. for carrying in the hand." Also, while reading Tolstoy's The Kreutzer Sonata, I came across the word "cogitate." Essentially, it means "to ponder."

The book An Incomplete Eduction has pointed out a whole list of adjectives with deceptive and inscrutable looks: Captious, Fractious, Noisome, Fulsome, Restive, Tortuous, Parlous, Passible Feckless, Dilatory, Mereticious, Fortuitous, Envervating, and Gnomic. These are excellent words in my opinion! :D

I am in love with the way some bengali words sound. I'm even in love with my own name  . But it'll be silly of me to post them here since i dont know of anyone else who knows bengali in this forum... *sigh*

Among english words....perhaps:
Esprit de corps
Cosmos
Cornucopia
Asphalt
Asteroidal (Dont look at me like that Virge!)
.... and a word invented by me  - "Thoughtosphere" - have been my favorite for quite a long while now.

Hello all, got a little bored so I thought I'd start a new thread.
What is your favourite word?
Why?
Looking forward to reading some opinions.
Personally I think my favourite word (well, one of them) is "eloquence" I think its because it flows so easily off the tongue, almost like the definition of the word itself.
Thankyou. :p

amanda_isabel

ooh, i didn't know there existed a term as ""defenestration". well, i'm learning :)

i don't really have any favorite words but i do have those i use in my everyday conversation for a a week then i replace with other words.

i don't know if you guys tried this too but the way a word appears on a page has a different effect on me. like, when i see the word, smile, i can immediately feel, or see, or whatever sense is stimulated there, the smile or the happy mood. but when i see, confused, it's almost as if i the confusion were somewhere around. does anyone else experience this or is this just more proof that i'm not human?

This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a member of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and...uh...oh crap....I don't remember the rest... :D

Off topic: the graphic novel V for Vendetta doesn't include the above quote. I expected it to be in there. He quotes Shakespeare a lot more in the graphic novel.

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant and vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition! The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

It's funny because no one probably realizes it's the "Funeral March" they've heard everywhere.

Indefatigable - That word reminds me of an inflatable bag that has been deflated and yet shows absolutely no signs of being beaten! It's sound and imagery seem so appropriate to its definition....

Doily

'Tis a funny word, and nope, El Sancho doesn't own any.

Sancho

Upon closer inspection, it would appear that El Sancho’s Señora has placed several doilies under several lamps on several tables at the Sancho Hacienda.

It is a funny word. I didn't think anyone under the age of 80 owned one any more. :D

Solipsistic:

"You are such a self-aggrandizing, solipsistic, ego queen." "The Tao of Steve.

Solipsistic

Serendipitous

Salamander

Succulence

Sarcophagus

Scrumpdilyishous

Splendiferous

And my favorite:

Supercilious

Multisyllabic words that start with S are almost always – FUNNY!

HAHAHAHAHA! HAH!

Also, Q, El Sancho y La Sanchita ain’t eighty yet, and we probably never will be. (I was pleasantly surprised when I hit thirty) But La Sanchita’s Abuelita (granny) is over eighty, and that’s who she got the doilies from, and I’ve gotta say, I kinda like them, and so does the cat. I don’t know why.

What's a cilious without it's super, I always say. Those are good words, and I'm sure with the love and care of your good La Sanchita you'll both live to enjoy her abuelita's doilies for a good long time. :)

But sans a physical dictionary, I grow tired of s. My newest favorite word, ripped from the headlines:

Amok: "Amok, amok, amok!" Sarah, Hocus Pocus

Also, do you and La Sanchita have any teeny tiny sanchitos/sanchitas running around? I'm also fond of the word

Teeny tiny, especially when written like this:

TEENY TINY (my thoughts run amok at the juxtoposition of ideas encapslated therein).

I also like, like, like Juxtopositon

AND

Extraneous, as in the word teeny tiny, either the teeny or the tiny is extraneous.

Egg is a good word. I think the Vikings gave it to us. So which came first, the chicken or the egg? Well, the egg came first, and then the egghead.

Anyhoo, no Shancettes, except for the furry, four-legged kind, and they’re enough. Besides, La Shanchita and I figured our gene pool was probably inappropriate for progenation…

Is progenation a word? Seems like it ought to be.

Along those same root-word lines, genuflect is a cool word. Although, as an American, I’m fairly hostile to the concept.

I forgot about that word. The Nuns used genuflect in church. I've always liked the word.

Cacophony is a good word.

Also, Steatopygous - I realise it's a condition (extra big buttocks found in some African tribes) that I wouldn't wish on anyone. Damn cool word though.

Good words all, nay, fantastic words all. Genuflect is particularly inspired, fun to say, esp. When you don't have to actually partake in doing it.

I like pants. That is all.

Also, how about onomatopoeia and oxymoron? Forget their uses as literary devices. I love the way they roll off the tongue and they make great insults:

"Onomatopoeia head!"

And

"You're an oxymoron!"

Sancho

Bombastic.

It just rolls off the tongue, eh?

Also it seems to be somewhat onomatopoetic.
