Well yes, the Old Major gave the animals an idea of a better life, of a revolution that will free them. But the problem is that the ruling animals after the revolution misused their power to their own purpose, especially Napoleon.

The animal farm after the revolution started towards utopia, but after Napoleon drove off Snowball, and took the position of the supreme head of the farm, the utopian dream turned in to a nightmare.

In other words, the revolution was not a bad thing, but the things did turn to worse after the certain events.

No, he's not guilty, like you're blaming Marx for Stalin's totalitarianism. He gave them idea and hope for revolution but he didn't instructed them for post-revolution disasters.

Bingo!

Given that Major is clearly modelled on Marx, tha analogy is particularly appropriate. Marx & Stalin, Wagner & Hitler - while one may have influenced the other, the despot must take the shame for the crime, not the one whose ideas were perverted.
