What sort of French Literature do you read?

Dear Shea,

Well as far as I am concerned, I am interested in all kinds of French Litterature since I am French educated since the age of 4 ( just like the majority of Lebanese Christians).

My favourite French writers are Zola, Camus, Victor Hugo, Maupassant, Charles Peguy and most of all Nerval and Baudelaire.

Currently, I like reading Marc Levy who is a French writer who lives in NY. One of his books is said to become a movie soon by Spielberg ("what if it was true").

What about you? Do you speak French?

Dear Isagel,

It would be my great pleasure......

BTW what is the origin of your name?

Isagel
03-25-2004, 08:22 AM
I look forward to it. The name is from one of my favorite poems called Aniara, by Harry Martinsson. The book is about a spaceship that loses it´s course, and how the people on it search for meaning, when lost and drifting. Translated I think the line would go -
"Isagel is the female pilot
she carries the name
which in itself is a code
that describes her station"

Isagel also means on of two or more objects that carries the same information.

What is the origin of yours? It sounds familiar, perhaps somehing I read in the Bibel?

Isagel , the moment I read your post , I googled to find the poem 'Aniara' .. only to discover that it is not a short one page poem that i was looking forward to but an epic by itself . read lots of reviews . Now am strongly wanting to read it . 'nother book added to my 'to be read soon' list .. but i dont know if it might be available here ... but then, there is always amazon !

Don't speak French just yet. I'll be starting it this summer. I love Victor Hugo and have always wanted to read Les Miserables in French. The only other French writer that I'm familiar with is Dumas (The Count of Monte Cristo). I look forward to reading more French Lit during my breaks from school.

Isagel,

Wow! Nice to know all this!

It seems you are a fan of Star Wars and other similar movies....seems interesting.

My nick is just "Lebanese Cedar".

Lebanon is my country. It is situated in the Middle East at the North of Israel.

The Cedar is the tree that is the symbol of Lebanon and it symbolises resistance against all winds and nature's attacks....

You can see this tree in my avatar....

If you wanna know more about Lebanon, I would be glad to help you!

Shea,

If you need any help in French just ask! ;)

Yes Dumas is indeed a great writer. Jules Vernes as well!

Hope to share a lot more with you all!

Dear Lebanese Cedar,

I look forward to learn more about lebanese literature.

Although I do not dislike Star Wars, I´m not a fan.
Perhaps I should explain better. Aniara is a book about existential struggle and alienation, where the people on the ship tries to cope with being lost in different ways. It is a symbol for the western society in the early fifthies, when Martinsson started to write the book.

It deals with the arms race and the cold war, as well as how to find meaning. In the drifting Aniara the people find different ways of coping - religious sects, sex , games , dance and parties. To talk about being lost is not allowed. The people onboard the Aniara are as much separated from each other as they are from the rest of mankind. All of them drifting in a vast emptiness.

"The strangest omens would be seen in space
but, since they were unsuited to the program
of our day, they were promptly forgotten."

The book is a song of death.

Avid_reader, I hope you will like it. You can get it at Amazon.
If you read it, please tell me what you think!

It might be hard to read sometimes - Martinsson invents new objects and words - like goldonder for spaceship. I used to read it aloud, to make sense of the words. I just realized that a lot of the words sometimes have an hidden meaning. The word Aniara for example means painful in greek.

The book is a song of death.
No offense to Star Wars or God, but the guy below me is one of the collaborators on an up and coming one, and my apartment stinks to high heaven from the multitudes of cigarettes he burns while writing. I've not only bought air filters, but also've taken to opening the windows no matter what the weather to protect my lungs and life. It's interesting to read what you said and look at it in practical terms, like "where is this writer coming from." I didn't care for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - though I found it very powerful - and wondered was it because Keasey was on LSD when he wrote it.

Howdy all,
I thought One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a great book, how about Sometimes a Great Notion? I am also "new" by the way, as of this afternoon, skipping class to play with lit forums, a soon to be much appriciated procrastination tool.
