Dear everyone,

I may be starting a "classical reading hour", but the people who would be joining it aren't native-English. Therefore, Shakespeare, or Oscar Wilde would probably be out of their league. I need something which they can tackle, something simplified, yet still interesting and mature. Any suggestions?

Help would be GREATLY appreciated,

Thanks ahead,

Fango

George Bernard Shaw is a good choice; plays deal with very mature subjects, but the language is not very difficult to understand. The only problem is that they are not very very simple, at least I think this. On many places, one has to do quite a brain-storming to get to know what Shaw is trying to say.

Dear everyone

Haha that's funny :D

Plays? I would look no further than Arthur Miller. Specially "The Crucible" and "Death of a Salesman". Not too hard to read, and true classics. Miller all the way :thumbs_up

What about o'casey. His plays are witty and much easier to compahend than Shaws.
Or you could select one of Brechts plays. Caucasian chalk circle Perhaps?

Harold Pinter is the master of common speech, if this class happens to be taking place in London. Don't bother trying to work out what his plays mean, though.

How about some modern classics? Try Caryl Churchill's Top Girls or Brian Friel's Faith Healer.

The American-written comedy, "My Three Angels" takes place in sweltering French prison colony somewhere. Good characterizations, spirit, humor.
