They were trying to destroy every possibility of thinking; in real world prisons and killing replaced Newspeak.

Succinct, and very accurately put. Allow me to quote Marx: 'Language is as old as consciousness'. You can't have consciousness without having language, and vice-versa. Therefore, restraining the language restrains consciousness, and freedom of thought.
This was, to me, the best aspect of the novel. Newspeak is, frighteningly, feasible, and only a genius would have come up with this 'reduce words reduce freedom' theory.

Take heed of those answers regarding Newspeak.
As to the appendix - it is an essential part of the story. The date of 2050 is no more relevant than the date of 1984 used in the title. The reason for the time frame is that reversal and removal of words could only be achieved after generations.
I'm guessing that Orwell was originally going to include it in the story, as he does with "Goldstein's book", but changed his mind. He gives away some of the major prinicples when Syme is talking to Winston, but the appendix is integral to understanding what the aim of The Party is.

Doesn't the Appendix indicate that Eurasia has collapsed?
(A parallel would be the Historical Notes at the end of *The Handmaid's Tale*)
