Well, Winston makes it quite clear that to retain his humanity he needs to stay pure of thought, which in his case, entails hating the system, the Party and BB.

Given that he feels the "bullet entering the brain" and love for BB, it's clear that he has failed totally.

On the other side, BB and the Party would now see Winston as a perfect human - loyal, obedient, unquestioning.

On the other hand it could be said that, as Winston says, he and Julia were never human to begin with - at one point (I can't remember quite where) he states that it is the proles that are human not the party members as they have retained an enjoyment of life and ideas of kindness and humanity.

for winston humanity is an end in itself regardless of the party.

was winston human when the story ended? he was still breathing, drinking, eating, crying? are these not human activities? when does someone stop being human? you could say that in our day and age, with advertizing infecting young people's minds and in a sense controlling the youth of america that we are just as much cogs in the machine as winston was in 1984...
