Here's something for you Irish to celebrate!
Ireland has entered the Cricket World Cup for the first time ever. Currently they're playing Pakistan in Jamaica. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it across, I'm stuck in Trinidad. But from checking the scores, they're giving Pakistan some stiff competition!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Here in Chicago they dye the river green to celebrate. Didn't go down to check it out today, but I'll assume it was the same bright emerald as this picture from last year:

And a toast with a nice pint of Guiness in honor of the day.

Are you serious Petrarch, dye the entire river green?

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Janine

Yeah, I wanted to know the same thing, Petrarch...can they dye the whole river or are you pulling our leg?
Virgil, your print nearly matches mine...copy cat:lol: I like your green better - it's prettier!:D
Those cookies look good, Drama, thanks! I believe I will have some.

I had a drink once --- I think they called it a snake bite. Anyway, it was Guiness and hard apple cider. It was great. That's the only way I will have Guiness.

My dad would always make corned beef to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

So have an alcoholic drink and some corned beef and Happy St. Patrick's day.

I'm now having my traditional St. Patick's Day shot of Irish whiskey. Normally I go out with a few freinds but his cat unfortunately died yesterday and he was in no mood to go out. So I'm just at home. :)

Just wrote this Haiku for St. Patty's Day, someone gave me the first line in Shared Haiku -

Old Saint Patrick's Day,
Minds flooded with memories;
Pubs brimming with life!

Or this version -

Old Saint Patrick's Day,
Minds flooded with memories;
Pubs brimming with beer!

Which do you like better?

Virgil, Thanks - you like the serious one then? Go to Haiku and see Penn's Haiku's - several in a row...nice. Really good, but see what I said to him...funny.

No blarney, they really do dye the river green. I'm not sure how much of its length they do it for, but the area right around the Michigan Ave. bridge is vivid. Here's the blurb on it from the official City of Chicago St. Patrick's Day Parade website, just to prove I'm not making this up.

Oh my, I wonder how many Guinness it took for that Chicago politician to come up with that idea .

Would you mind if I joined you for the Irish whiskey, Virgil ? While I don't really like beer (except Guinness, I found that it indeed tastes excellent :D), I'm quite fond of whiskey, especially the Irish or Scottish ones. I know the legal drinking age in the US is 21 and I'm only 20, but I assure you I look 21 and I won't take more than one :D.

Oh, and happy St. Patrick's Day everyone !

Happy St. Patrick's Day !!

I sorry I am a bit ignorant but, what do you guys do in this festival?
We have a big Parade over here with floats and marching bands and arcobats. there do be people handing out free sweets to kind. People come from all over the world to participate in the celebrations. Everywhere is green white and orange and covered in shamrocks. You can get green guinness in pubs with shamrocks made out on the top by the barman when they are pulling the pint or you can go to macdonalds and get a shamrock shake(mint flavoured not shamrock flavoured:p ) there is also a firework display but it has been cancelled tonight because of the weather. Its snowing here at the moment.odd. and lots of people get drunk!

did you not have blackcurrent cordial in you snake bite too? thats the way its served here, or you get beer instead of guinness.

Thanks, Niamh. Does it have something to do with Saint Patrick too? I get the celebration part, but it being called with a saint's name must have to do something with him also. :)

oh yes sorry, i should have mentioned that. Yes it's our feastday for the parton saint of our country St.Patrick. It is assumed by the church that saint Patrick brought christianity to ireland and that he was the first to preach the word of god to the Irish.(which is wrong as history i.e roman dictated history stated that Paladius (i think it was paladius) arrived in ireland 50 years or so before st. patrick. but anyhow once a year on the 17th of march we celebrate him. but now its become somewhat universal as there are so many irish around the world. Infact, there are more Irish descent and Irish blood in the rest of the world then there is in Ireland!:p

Actually legal drinking age varies on the locality. I guess it's 21 in NY, although it's been so long since I was concerned about it I'm not exactly sure I'm rmembering it correctly. ;)

Sure we can have a shot of Jameson Irish whiskey. I did enjoy that last night.

Almost two-thirds of people celebrating St Patrick's Day have no idea who the priest was, a survey claims. Guinness sales rise dramatically every year on 17 March as people across the world mark the event.

But its true meaning has been forgotten - or never learnt - by many, according to the Manchester Irish Festival.

Organisers quizzed 2,000 people taking part in its festival parade but only 40% knew of the Christian missionary, who is the patron saint of Ireland.

Massive event

Manchester Irish Festival treasurer Patrick Marmion said: "People these days tend to celebrate St Patrick's Day with a massive party.

"The results found that the majority of Irish revellers believed St Patrick's Day meant wearing the Shamrock, sampling the Guinness and modelling the seasons must-have novelty hat.

"It has turned into an event where people go out and catch up with friends for a few drinks.

"In Ireland itself, the majority of people would take the opportunity to go to Mass - but also find time to have a few Guinness."

Teenage slave

Folklore tells how the priest, who was eventually elevated to the post of bishop, drove snakes out of Ireland.

The story is thought to symbolise his role in the conversion of the population to Christianity.

St Patrick is traditionally associated with the Shamrock plant, which he used to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

The date of 17 March is thought to be the anniversary of his death.

Patrick was born in Roman Britain and was captured by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland when he was 16.

He lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family and entering the church, as his father and grandfather had before him.

St Patrick later returned to Ireland as a missionary, where he spread the word of Christianity, and by the Eighth Century he had become the patron saint of Ireland. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6459361.stm
