As a complete spur of the moment thing, my mam and myself have booked a few days in a lovely old hotel, (which my mam says looks like it could be haunted. Excellent!:D ) in old town Edinburgh. I never been to Edinburgh and was wondering if anyone here has been and if they can recommend places to see! The castle and the Blair St vaults are a big Yes already! And My accommodation is a stone throw away from both of these attractions:nod:

Also on our last day we have to check out at 11am and our flight is not till 10pm, so does anyone know of a nice tourist attraction we could go to close to Edinburgh as part of a tour to pass the time? Maybe a nice Scottish Castle?

:D Niamh:D

I've been there Niamh, and it sounds like you're right in the heart of the city. I couldn't off the top of my head remember what to see, but it's mostly within walking distance of where you're at. I think if you look up sites to see in Edinburg with google it should list a bunch for you. Also ask the hotel for a map and places to see. I'm sure they can help. It was a great city, by the way.

If you've got time you should try and climb Arthur's Seat (big hill, can't miss it!) mainly for the view you get of the whole of Edinburgh. If you're staying in the city centre then you'll just be next to Prince's street, the gardens are close by and the two national galleries. Don't know what they have at the moment...
Rosslyn Chapel is not too far away from Edinburgh and you can get there by bus.
Hope you have a great time when you go!
The weather's a bit grey at the moment...but hey, it's Scotland. But we're getting some sun as well during the day, so it's getting better!

The weather is always grey when i'm in scotland:lol: Thanks for all those suggestions! Is Arthurs seat the hil with the castle on it? if it is, cowgate where i'm staying is at the very bottom in the ravine by south bridge and beside blair st. My mam has already said that there in no way shes walking up those hills! 'I'm getting the bus!':p
Its just off high st so i'm not that far from princes st, so i'll deffinately be going to the national gallery:nod:
Also is the ghost tour any good? I've already told my mam we're going to the blair st vaults (no reply), but wouldnt mind visiting other haunted locations! And do you know where Mary kings Close is located? thanks!

Afraid Arthur's Seat is an actual hill which you have to climb to get to the top...The one with the castle is not too bad actually, it's a nice road that leads up to it (Royal Mile/High street). They've got a few touristy shops there, mainly selling whisky and fudge! And some nice buildings I wish I could live in! But the view from where the castle is, is also very nice. And you'll see Arthur's seat from there as well. Along with some tall ugly buildings which are a bit of an eye sore (and some are of the university!)
I haven't been on the ghost tour, I've heard that they take you round the lower parts of the city (old town) and tell you about the history of the city, but don't know much else, sorry!
Mary Kings Close is on the upper Hight street (high street is divided by another big road where the bridges are), and is opposite St Gile's Cathedral. It's relatively close to where you'll be staying and I'm sure most people will be able to point you to the right direction.
Hope this helps....and let me know if you have any more questions, I'll be glad to help!

thank you very much! i've just looked for that cathedral on my map and found it. you are right! its like a stone throw from where i'm staying. i must have landed myself in the haunted quarter of old town as i'm right beside the blair street vaults aswell. my hotel will end up being haunted next!
