Songs, and Poems, and Promises - John Denver I'm a big fan of John Denver but am told by my beloved wife that it is "weenie music".
There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell

The Osmonds? How could you :(
As a stranger I arrived
As a stranger I shall leave
I remember a perfect day in May
How bright the flowers
How cool the breeze
The maiden spoke of love
The mother had kind words
But now the world is dreary
With a winter path before me
I can’t choose the season
To depart from this place
I won’t delay or ponder
I must begin my journey now
The bright moon lights my path
It will guide me on my road
I see the snow-covered meadow
I see where deer have trod
A voice within says – go now
Why linger and delay?
Leave the dogs to bay at the moon
Before her father’s gate
For love is a thing of changes
God has made it so
Ever-changing from old to new
God has made it so
So love delights in changes
Good night, my love, good night
Love is a thing of changes
Good night, my love, good night
I’ll not disturb your sleep
But I’ll write above your door
A simple farewell message
Good night, my love, good night
These are the last words spoken
Soon I’ll be out of sight
A simple farewell message
Good night, my love, good night

Eric Woolfson's Immortal, had to look at that up...one place suggested it was a song that can describe Shakespeare's life even though apparently the song was written about edgar allen poe...?
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave

'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

Eric Woolfson and the Alan Parson's project were big fans of Poe and they did quite a few of their songs influenced by him, including the album Tales of Mystery and Imagination, there are adaptations of The Raven, The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Gold Bug and others...
I didn't get the reference to Shakespeare - what was it?
I sort of take this one to be a bit of an adaptation of Edgar Poe's famous "A Dream Within a Dream," sort of making it Eric's own..
I actually just discovered this song, so I haven't made up my mind about it. I love the lyrics, but I've only listened to it once. I'm really a fan of quite a few of Woolfson's works such as "Freudiana," "I Am a Mirror," "Little Hans," "It's Funny You Should Say That," and of course, his work with Alan Parson's Project.

I got the Shakespeare reference just from someone on yahoo questions who was talking about the song in general. the poster didn't illustrate specifically how they were connected.
I think that's pretty neat when literary culture influences musical culture...if I knew more of poe, id be all the more interested in listening to those groups' music. or alternatively, if I knew more of their music, I might want to read more poe. and now maybe I will...
I recently learned that one of my favorite songs by Florence the machine (what the water gave me) was inspired by the lead singer's knowledge of Virginia woolf's suicide and a visit to her gardens.

He said, if you dare come a little closer
Round and around and around and around we go

Evidently there is another song with "Soft Texas drawl" in it, that would be Texas women by Hank Williams, Jr. :-)
So these, I adjusted them from a live version that is my favourite.
And he's taken the halter from his hose,
And from his purpose he did not fail
He slipped it over the wanton's nose
He's tied it to the grey mare's tail
He's loosed them out the castle gates
And the mare didn't fail to find her way
She was at Lochmaben town,
Threen long hours before the day.
And the very next morning in broad daylight
When they had ended all their cheer
Behold the wanton brown was gone
Likewise the poor blind harper's mare
It's oh and alas, said the blind harper
It's ever and alas that I came here
In Scotland I've lost me a good grey foal
In England they've stolen me old grey mare.
And it's hold your talking, you blind harper
And again of your music let us hear
Well paid shall your colt foal be
You will have a far better mare
So the harper harped and then he sang
So sweet was the music he let them hear
He was paid for a foal that he never had lost
Three times over for the good grey mare.

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be

I realize and I can see
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
I try to find a way to make
All our little joys relate
Without that ever-present hate
But now I know that it's too late, and
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
And to another give my seat
For that's the only painless feat
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger watch it grin, but
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied 'Oh, why ask me?'
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
" ------------------------"
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
And you can do the same thing if you please

Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue ~ Crystal Gayle an oldie but a goodie.
I was coming to the end of a long, long walk
When a man crawled out of a cardboard box
Under the E. Street Bridge
Followed me on to it...

Hummmmmm....
I didn't think that one would be hard. It's "Moments" by Emerson Drive
Try another, this being the Christmas Season...
"In the night was the dark
In the dark was the dream
In the dream was the child
And myself there unseen

That was the most abstract, hard-to-find song,, "Dream Child" it's called by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (what does that even mean). Lol to keep things old school but a little more mainstream, I'll shoot a classic.
Thunder only happens when it's rainin'
Player's only love you when they're playin'
Women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean you'll know
Bare with me if the lyrics are a little off.

saw Fleetwood mac (dreams) when I was in high school...
one of my all time favorites:
I was only a kid
When I said goodbye to you
Ten summers ago
But it feels like yesterday
Lost, scared and alone
Nothing I could give to you
I tried, I really did
But I couldn't find another way
And I want, and I need
Somehow to believe
In the choice I made
Am I better off this way?
I can hear the __________________
Saying you should be with me instead
Every time I'm feeling down, I wonder
What would it be like with you around?
So I, I made my way
Cold and roaming in the wild
I'm forever changed
By someone I never knew
Now I've, I've got a place
I've got a husband and a child
But I'll never forget
What I've given up in you
And I want, I need
Somehow to believe
In the choice I made
Am I better off this way?
I can hear the __________________

Voice Inside My Head, Dixie Chicks, and yes I cheated. ;-)
The next one is for you 80s music fans, though this one is a little more obscure, for Americans especially. My hints are it's a guy not a band, and he's British. What follows is the chorus of the song:
Near a tree by a river
There's a hole in the ground
Where an old man of Aran
Goes around and around
And his mind is a beacon in the veil of the night
For a strange kind of fashion
There's a wrong and a right
But he'll never, never fight over you
And no cheating, it's dishonorable. :-0

Nik Kershaw - The Riddle (Hey I am 55, you know!) also done by GiGi something or other...
Try this it's the bridge in this classic rock song
You better stand tall when they're throwing you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down
