Please add T.H. Whites the Once and Future King to the list. It's the best book on King Arthur. Although it was written in 1958 so it could be to young.

There's almost NO scifi that is old enough to be out of copyright. Only scifi precursers like Lovecraft and Poe.

I wouldn't consider Lovecraft a parody of ANYBODY. This man was freaking crazy original. He and Poe had similarities, and both were great authors, but Lovecraft really combined supernatural with extra terrestrial, which I don't think that Poe did. I could be mistaken. Care to start a compare thread in general lit?

I asked you that because that's something Borges said, and surprised me. I've read Poe and Lovecraft and I can't help but feeling that those words are right, even if I don't agree with them. Your thoughts are correct, they had many similarities, but deep differences also. Despite they're good writers, they didn't amuse me much.

I forgot about HG Wells and Jules Verne. I think they're both old enough to be on here.

For those who like Poe I would recommend ETA Hoffman , one of the first to write horror stories.
