I'm a little confused... Do you want fiction written by a fan? or fiction written about a fan? What type of fan? baseball? electric? Maybe one of those fans that were operated by slaves in egypt to fan the upper classes? Please elaborate.

Fanfiction: "Fiction written by fans as an extension of an admired work or series of works […] often posted on the Internet or published in fanzines."
@jimbobsmoothie: The idea is that you create your own story.

The whole idea of fanfiction seems a little bizarre to me anyway. But as Themis said, create your own story. Besides, your question's rather vague....

Did you mean your own story based on the novel written by an author.
If so say the novel..

vin, i think fan fictions are often based on TV series or movies, e.g. Harry Potter, Star Trek,...

You are writing about a fan fiction and want ideas for a story? Your question is very ambigious and vauge as well as lacking in any premise.
Do you want ideas for a fan fiction of
Fantasy
Mystery
Sci-Fi
Drama
Fiction
Thriller
Action
Here is an idea. Have the hero encounter a turmoil of some kind which he must overcome against what might seem impossible odds. There you go there is an idea for fan fiction.

"Harry Potter" is neither a tv series nor a movie, Sleepy. ;) Originally, I mean.

hehe, Themis, thanks ... stupid me
jimbo, I suppose it all depends on what YOU are a fan of??? if you're not a fan of some novel/movie etc, why write a fan fiction?

Actually, there are literally thousands of things to write fanfiction about.
www.fanfiction.net
Movies, books, anime, TV shows, etc....I do write fanfiction. It's a great way to twist the story to satisfy you and your readers. :D
P.S. My fanfiction account is NOT Wandering_Child. It's under another username.

Fanfictions are good....but I have to say reading fanfiction can entirely change the perspective on a particular character.
But then again some are ok...

Fanfiction is a mixed blessing. There are those who insist on taking a wonderful story and twisting it into a piece of garbage, and those who take the story and sculpt it into something more magnficent than it already was.
Then there's the whole bit with OOC-ness, canon, pairings, Mary-Sues, AUs, and many other dreadful things that make your IQ drop three points with each word.

You are very right. I have read some wonderful Harry Potter fanfictions on this site: www.fanfiction.net while many of them were a mess.

Most stories there are a mess. (Except mine of course... :D Ahem. ;))
@Wandering_Child: Oh dear. And there I thought I 'knew' you for a minute. Which username is it then, if you don't mind me asking?

I write fan fiction at fanfiction.net as well. For what canons do you write? and under what names? I'd love to go read them. I do Lord of the Rings.

Yes, that is where my account is. Once I dared to venture into the Harry Potter fanfiction world. Let me just say...that it didn't go over too well. If you have any suggestions, please, share them! However, one thing I cannot stand is slash. No offense, but that is just me.
I've been wandering away from the Harry Potter world for far too long. I miss it. :)
Themis: I write Phantom of the Opera fanfiction. If that is your cup of tea then I wouldn't mind sharing my username with you.

@andave_ya: I write mostly in German but I've got one or two stories in English online. I tend to concentrate on one fandom at a time, right now that's "Pirates of the Caribbean", before it has been Alexandre Dumas' "The three Musketeers".
@Wandering_Child: It is. There are few fandoms that I don't read at all. And I like "Phantom of the Opera". It's been my favorite when I was a child. ;)

I, myself used to get aggravated on seeing "slash" in most of the stories there. I could not bear it as well. All those Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter or Snape or Harry's pairings were more than annoying. Other than slash, I never liked like Hermione/Snape or Hermione/Draco pairing as well.
You can try the writer "nemisis" over there. I think she has deleted her account, but her only fanfiction I Am Lord Voldemort was just amazing! Probably the best one I have ever read. It was about Lord Voldemort's own years in Hogwarts, and the adventures he had in the Magical School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. :)
There were some time-travel fictions too, that I liked, but I can't really remember the authors' name, except one: Amandinka. Her story was quite okay.
And hey, don't forget to try Letters From Home by catilyn (I have forgotten the spellings of author's name. Sorry for that) but I found it very well-written. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a really good HP fanfiction. :)
It has been a year since I stopped reading fanfiction, but I will highly appreciate any recommendation that would make me get into this love of HP fanfictions, again. :D

I agree with you on the slash thing...ugh I hate it when Harry is paired with draco..and Snape is just sick...But on the other hand some Draco/Hermione pairings are good. Snape/Hermione..is ok..I have read some fics. Harry/Ginny or Draco/Ginny is ok to me...
Then I tried readin LOTR fanfics...some are nice and some don't do the story justice...If you know any good LOTR fics let me know ;)

Like many of you, Harry Potter introduced me to the world of fanfiction. I remember the story was about Snape turning into a baby and the trio having to take care of them. It was actually quite cute. :D
After some more searching I was nearly floored when I saw how many stories litter the internet. So not long after I wrote my first story. When I think back on it I want to hang myself. Oh, well. Luckily the fansite shut down and it is lost now. After some taste in good, quality stories I drastically improved my writing. Not that it's the best it probably could be, but....
When I went over to the HP forum on fanfiction.net I found hundreds of stories that had been published that day. It turns out that about 90% of those writers will abandon those stories within a few weeks. So, needless to say, it is rather difficult to find a quality HP fanfiction.
Anyways, that's enough of my blabbering. Lahve to all.

I once came across a particulary strange HP fanfiction piece involving a romance between Malfoy and a house elf. It did not take more than a sentence to exit out of that window....

Well, I came across nothing of this sort unless you count romance between Dobby and Winky (which was written in a strange way, brought me into a fit of laughter though I am quite sure the writer had not meant to be funny). :p

what's slash? is that when they write weird porn stuff about the characters???
i stumbled over a really disgusting Snape/Hermione story once.. it wasn't marked as slash in any way and the summary just said it's set after the 7th book.. so unsuspecting little Sleepy thought it could be interesting... and slam there it goes talking about Snape's *wand*.. http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sick/sick0012.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net)

i adore Snape but i don't care to know about his wand, really.
I never read another fan fiction after that.
Why do they write stuff like that?

Because most of the time (no offense meant), they're little 12 year-olds who need their soft core porn. Don't read those stories. Explicit writing is just a way for the younger kiddies to have their porn without images - without their parents knowing about it.
Slash is homosexuality, you know, where they have guys liking guys. Like Draco and Harry getting together = slash.
It's a pity that your first story was one of the craptacular ones. There really are some amazing authors out there.

Slash works almost never. But there do exist some great stories where the slash isn't explicit, just implied.
@Sleepy: Yes, you should try read some stories.

Obviously Jo's books are still too open-ended, or she includes character deaths, which fans aren't happy with, so they create their own stories and all that jazz. I expect an even bigger uprise of new stories after the seventh book. If Harry dies, then there will probably be thousands of stories in which he comes back to life - if any main, beloved character dies, most likely.
So, what other fanfictions do you all read? I read POTO mainly, but occasionally I'll wander over to the Les Miserables forum.
