Havn't read any of the Dune books, but I've seen the movie (I know, seeing the movie is a cheap cop out. :( )
My mom is a big si-fi fan and she loves the Dune books. I never got into them myself yet, but I'm going to try reading them one day for her sake.

They are the best sci-fi series ever.... but make sure you don't read the crappy Brian-Herbert Prequels before you read the awesome Frank Herbert originals

I've read the original Dune, and the one after it. I liked the first one much better than the second one.
I suppose you could consider myself a fan... seen the movie, too.

Fear is the mind killer, you know.

It was some years ago, about 3, but I have read the whole Dune series and even the prequals written by his son and some other dudes. I first read the first book in the series when I was about 12 or 13, and then again to read the entire series. I began my interest in the series with the movie that had Sting (who had 6 lines I think) and Patrick Stewart to boot! If you want some discussion about the book email me at
[email protected] I might be rusty on the whole series but enjoyed the political intrigue and fascinating world Herbert wrote about but did not finish. I hate that he died before he finished the series, what a bummer.

I was just there last week. Anyways... yeah... I don't have anything to discuss really... I am rereading them (got them for my b-day) And I love them. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has enjoyed these books.

I absolutely loved the first book and hated the second so I didn't read anymore.

Frank Herbert's 'Dune' is, by far, one of the best series that I have ever read. Granted, #2 is a little bit dry, but when compared to Brian Herberts 'Butlerian Jihad'... well, need I say more? I have two theories on Frank Herbert's final two books though, and I'd love to hear some feedback on it.
1. Regarding books 5 and 6. Duncan Idaho, is, in some way being 'spoken to' by face dancer's gone crazy... recall his dream when the word 'danger' wakes him out of it (recall the crazy face dancer in #5 who took on the persona of a person they mimicked so completely that they forgot who they were), who are actually those innocent little farmers out to manipulate the world (the scene at the very end of #6 which I am at odds to explain)
2. There is some incredible reason why Frank Herbert maintained Duncan Idaho's character through the length of the books other than simply because it would be fun. Of course, I can't figure out exactly what, but the suspicion is there.

I just read Dune and I couldn't put it down; went through it in three days. But I have heard that the following books aren't as good so I haven't gotten them yet.

One of the best sci-fi books I have ever read! I saw the movie in two or three parts a few years ago on tv, loved it.

I must not fear
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass
Over me and through me.
And when it has gone past
I will turn the inner eye
To see its path.
Where the fear has gone
There will be nothing.
Only I will remain....
just starting on Dune. So far it is okay-ish. Interesting enough to hold onto my interest but no so amazing that I forget every other activity in the world and devour it all in one big preptual gulp.

I read the first two before my supply was cut off, and I rather enjoyed them. Something about being attracted to complex books, I think. Nothing worse than a book that gives away all its secrets in the first chapter, or feels the need to explain/excuse itself.
You have to have patience for politics, though. Mine is rather short, in this regard. I needed to take a bit of a break after the first one. But I'll keep reading. Never been able to let a series go unfinished...

hey Taliesin, thanks so much for posting that quote. it saved my life :)
i seem to remember that i copied it from one of the Dune books or somewhere years and years ago but then i forgot all about it. and here you go posting that same quote :) last week i freaked my self out about an essay for 3 days running and then i remembered you had posted this quote and i wrote it down and read it out to myself a couple of times. and lo and behold it calmed me down immediately and i'm not freaking about the essay any more (even though the deadline is on Tue and i haven't written a single word yet).

Hello all,
I'm new to these forums... and a great Dune fan since I read the books some years ago... I have read the whole story, including the prequels... although I haven't re-read them lately, so my leaking memory has lost most of the plot... Yet,, some things still strike me from time to time... for example when i catch myself choosing the chair that does not back the door... (ok, i think i should accept that i'm a geek in whatever i do... ;-) )
Ok, it's getting late for me... (nearly midnight over here), so I guess I'll just try to get some sleep... after reading something ;-)
Wish you all the best,
Slán,
Keltic Banshee
