I wrote this poem way back in high school. The inspiration for this poem came at my great-grandpa's funeral when I overheard my great-grandma praying and asking God to keep her husband alive in her memory. It was published in poetry.com's The Best Poems & Poets Of 2002 and I was curious to hear what you guys think about it. Bear in mind when you read it I was quite young . ;)

A Lover's Prayer

God, don't ever let my true love die before me.
But if he must, this is my dying wish.
Copy his face on the sun
So he may shine his love into my eyes.
Make him the mighty redwood
So he can still protect and shield me.
Make him the sweet spring grass
So I may lie down beside him.
Make him the stars in the sky
So he may guide me and light my path.
Make him a gentle breeze to wrap around me
And whisper sweet I-love-you's in my ear.
But, God, if that is not possible,
Leave his kiss on my lips,
Keep his touch on my skin,
Paint his face on my eyes,
Write his words in my memory.
But, God, most of all,
Hold this prayer in my heart.

I like it very much!
The capacity of getting over losses is at the same time the great value and weakness of man....and your poem tells about a woman who refuses to get over. She accepts her destiny, she accepts God's plan, but still she doesn't want to forget. I think it is beautiful!:D

That's exactly how she approached life and death. She left it up to God but held onto those memories. She was my muse. :)

Thanks guys! I appreciate you reading it and giving me feedback.
