Always: For Kaltrina

She lives in a place where there’s been so much pain.
The wars torn her country and sometime she felt so alone.
Just when things settled down, there started right up again.
But somehow she still smiles and she always goes on.
This daughter of Kosova had to grow up so fast—
She’s probably seen things that would make some of us faint.
There are scars on the soil, and memories of things that are past—
But she smiles and continues and has the patience of a saint.
I’ve not heard a word of complaint escape from her mouth,
If problems have scarred her she hides it deep in her heart.
No matter the odds she never slows down or gives out—
Each morning she gets up and makes a new start.
And oh, it’s her birthday. Another one down. Which one can this be?
She may be one year older, but she’s forever a lady to me.
