One of my closest friends just had a really nasty break-up and I want to find a really good poem to comfort her a bit. Something about pain and how incredibly unfair life can be, but at the same time hope for the future and change. i know this sounds really general, but I'll be grateful for anything anyone can reccomend. Thanks!

I am sorry to hear about your friend's break-up. I hope she/he would get well soon. Maybe "Life" by Emily Bronte will work?

Life believe is not a dream so dark as sages say
Often a little morning rain fortells a pleasant day
Sometimes there are clouds of gloom
But those are transient all
If the shower will make the roses bloom
O why lament its fall?
Rapidly, merrily,
Lige's sunny hours flit by,
Gratefully, cheerily
Enjoy them as they fly

I have forgotten the middle verses, but I can remember the ending fairly well, because I love it!

Manfully, fearlessly,
The day of trial bear,
For gloriously, victorously,
Can courage quell dispair!

I am not very sure if it is the right thing you are looking for, but I hope it helps. :)

I know this might sound silly but play Abbas Chicacita. more or less about break up an being encouraged to see that there is more to life. Hey why not just play lots of abba and have a girly singsong! that always cheers me up! :D

You could try Tennyson's "In Memorium", but it's quite long.

Thanks for the reccomendation Niam! I am quite fond of ABBA myself :D That really is a lovely song, i think i may compile some really nice poem and song extracts together for her.

Thanks IP! I took a look at the poem and it is quite long indeed, but very well structured. Lots of good philosophy in there, it made for a nice read.

I know you are asking for poems, drama, but this is a short essay that you may want to take a look at. I think your friend might find it comforting...

*edit* and for sure do as Niamh suggests and have a girl's night in and play lots of ABBA!

"Life" is by Charlotte Bronte.

I didn't know either until I went looking for the whole and couldn't find it. When working from memory it is very easy to confuse the sisters. To be honest, I always considered Emily the better poet and it surprised me that such a poem came from Charlotte.

That poem was aboslutely beautiful Psyche...exactly what i was looking for. Thank you so much.It was such a delight to read, i think I must post it:

Life, believe, is not a dream
So dark as sages say;
Oft a little morning rain
Foretells a pleasant day.
Sometimes there are clouds of gloom,
But these are transient all;
If the shower will make the roses bloom,
O why lament its fall?
Rapidly, merrily,
Life's sunny hours flit by,
Gratefully, cheerily
Enjoy them as they fly!
What though Death at times steps in,
And calls our Best away?
What though sorrow seems to win,
O'er hope, a heavy sway?
Yet Hope again elastic springs,
Unconquered, though she fell;
Still buoyant are her golden wings,
Still strong to bear us well.
Manfully, fearlessly,
The day of trial bear,
For gloriously, victoriously,
Can courage quell despair!
