Spot on. Definition: There are three descriptions to the image of the basilisk: a huge lizard, a giant snake or a three-foot high cockerel with a snake's tail and teeth, all of which are shared with the cockatrice. It is called "king" because it is reputed to have on its head a mitre- or crown-shaped crest. Stories of the basilisk place it in the same general family as the cockatrice. The basilisk is fabulously alleged to be hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent (the reverse of the cockatrice, which was hatched from a hen's egg incubated by a serpent's nest). In Medieval Europe, the description of the creature began taking on features from cockerels.

According to google Xanth is a magical world (in a series of books by Piers Anthony), not a creature.

Um, I have the entire series, and have read them extensively, and so I know of this Demon X(A/N)th (I was off in my spelling, been a while.) That would be read as X (A ÷ N) to the th power. The below comes from this offical site:

Xanth ( pronounced Zanth) is a magical land, not at all like Mundania where we live. Xanth is shaped like the mundane state of Florida but that is where the similarity ends. Actually, Scharp, I know very little about them , and I am of German descent on my mother's side. That is the same picture I have, ethereal looking, isn't it? They are known as "The Waterworn Witches" and there are artifacts accociated with them, but it seems to be German legend and folklore.
