I found this quiz on another site:

What American accent do you have?

http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have

It was right on for me.

I got the Midland. It was correct... I'm a Midwest girl.

I got North Central which is right on but I do have a quibble with something they said: "If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary." I did see Fargo and I actually live just a few hours from Fargo but I did think they sounded funny. Their accents in that movie were just a tad bit exaggerated, if you want to hear a good north central accent watch the movie Miracle.

I got North-Central too Idril! Thats very interesting how that works. I found the last sentence a tad funny though....
Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

Hihi, that's funny, I got:

Your Result: The Northeast

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.
Though two friends of mine in Florida describe my accent as "Australian", it is, of course, German :D.

Looks like that in case we were to meet, I could actually understand you, Virgil :D.
We have an exchange student from Texas doing a year abroad here in Germay, and he's giving us a lot of trouble with his accent :D.

Couldn't be more wrong in my case..... told me "the West" SoCal or the like.

Even though I'm in Alaska now, I was born & raised in Maine by parents with Boston accents.... So I should have gotten Boston or New England.

~"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent."

no accent, but when I start saying totally, and like all of the time, I'll be pinned down to CA. and I called my husband, Man, the other day, much to his Texas consternation.

76% - that makes me native and stupid.

According to the quiz, my accent is from The Inland North and also "Standard English straight out of the dictionary". Suppose that's not quite a surprise ;)

Well, it had me down as Northeast (Philadelphia) which is interesting because I'm from the UK!

I did the "How English are you" quiz as well and (fortunately) I'm 90% English, which is probably about right. I think answering the "What were the Beatles" question as "Scousers" might have let me down (and the cricket question - we're no good at it why would I know how many were in a team!)

Virgil

hahaha. I'm 47% English. I'm surprised it was that high. I'm must have gotten lucky on a few guesses. ;)

How many are on a cricket team?

Here's my result:

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Actually, I am from the Southeast. People who are from the South ask me where I am from and tell me that I don't talk like I am from the South. However, people from, say Chicago, tell me that they hear the South come out from time to time. And the more I am around people with the deep Southern accents, the more I tend to use that accent. (For example, my coworkers lives on top of the heel, instead of on top of the hill...)

And when spoken a certain way, I think a Southern accent is pretty alright :thumbs_up

Ok, I took the quiz...

Hey, it picked me out pretty well. Northeast: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island. And that, as it happens, matches my result. It's just that I have never been near the place. I have in fact never made the hop across the pond at all

Usually people from the U.S. claim that I sound like a brit, so I tried "How English are you?" quiz for good measure, and scored 58%.

Ok i just did this for a laugh and it came out as Philidelphia. Question... does a phily accent sound anything like an Irish one?

I also did a couple of other quizes;
I did the how much of a reader are you?
Dedicated reader-you are always trying to get back to your book. You are convienced that the world would be a better place if only everyone read more.

Also did a stereo type one to see if i'd get put in to a stereotypical group. ie nerd, loner, band geek, jock etc.

My result was no stereotype'.:p

Most non-native english speakers do tend to speak more British sounding than American. Kind of makes sense.

Yeah i heard the new york Parade is Humongus! My cousin was in argentina a few years ago when paddys day came along, and the had celebrations there but when my cousin and her friends asked people why thety were celebrating it nobody actually knew! All they knew was that once a year there was this big celebration and everyone would get their photos taken with english speaking people and go to the Irish Bar! She thought it was very odd!

My brother married a girl from Norway and before I met her, I expected her to have that really exaggerated Norwegian accent I heard from the old Norwegian farmers in the area where I grew up but I was very surprised when I met her. I thought she sounded more English than Scandinavian but after having met all her family I've come to realize that Scandinavians do not sound like the Swedish chef (from the Muppets in case you aren't familar with that character).

Great quizzes, definite addictive potential. ;)
My accent is The West, right on, I'm from Nebraska. We don't have an accent, darn it!
I am also 66% English. I am totally shocked it was so high. I think they must have given me some pity points, or maybe I'm just that good of a guesser. What the heck is The City?

I was so disappointed as a child to learn that the Swedish chef wasnt' actually speaking Swedish. I was just shattered, because it just seemed to me (at like 4 or 5) that any land where people spoke like that, why it just had to be a magical, happy place! :)

I have to say, being American, without an accent is a drag, because I love accents. My favorites are Scotish, British, of course Australian, and Italian. I could just listen to them all day long.

I was so disappointed as a child to learn that the Swedish chef wasnt' actually speaking Swedish. Alas, he does not. I do however happen to know about the person the Swedish chef is modeled after: A Swedish cook who turned a live TV broadcast in the U.S. into a king size disaster because of extreme stage fright, nervously babbling some swenglish nobody could possibly comprehend. I read an interview with him last year, where he told the tale.

I didn't know he was based on a real person! That's a riot! I knew he was speaking rubbish but I guess I thought when Swedish people spoke English, they would still have that really pronounced 'sing-song' to their words but they don't. My brother's kids have been bi-lingual since birth really with their first or 'home' language being Norwegian and I remember when my niece started speaking English more freguently, I suppose she was about 3 or 4, she still had a very strong lilt to her speech, the tone of her voice going all over the place during a sentence and it was the cutest thing but she lost that pretty quickly.

I love accents too, not American ones, they really don't do anything for me but any other accent just brings me to my knees, especially slavic ones for some reason.

I've been working with some Canadians lately, and I get stuck talking like them...what a hoot...

I think someone posted that they don't have an accent...Umm sorry to inform you that you and everyone you come into contact has some sort of accent. You just don't notice it because you hear people around you talking the same way.

I'm afraid they hit my nail on the head. It says I have an "Inland North" accent, from the Great Lakes area around Wisconsin/Chicago. I live about 40 miles northwest of Chicago.

I never realized my accent (or lack thereof) was so apparent.

Thats not quite what I meant, it's just that many Canadian speech stereotypes are applied to all Canadians, when really most only apply to certain Canadian accents (there's not just one Canadian accent). I'd say the western provinces, Ontario, and Maritime/Newfoundland all have different accents. For instance I've never heard anyone from around here say aboot, everybody from the coast does, and I know some people from Ontario that do. I'm pretty sure that was directed at me, so there's my rationale, if it wasn't I'm sorry  .

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

How can I have a southern accent if I'm Cuban, I'm not even souther! and i live in Florida!
